Merchants.
The committee having been notified by
the Secretary of State, that tbc Agent of
claims and appeals appointed by the Presi
dent of the United States is to embark
immediately for London, and that he is au
thorized to bind the United States upder the
direflipn of Mr. Jav» forthe costs and da
mages, attending the prosecution of the
claims of American citizens ; that the nccef
fary counsel will be engaged on the part "j
the United States, and, th»: if tlie parties
will obtain copies of the proceedings of tne
Courts on their respective cases, the cx
penfes of the records will be reimbuifed by
the United States,
They are of opinion that mealures
ought to be immediately taken for obtain
ing authenticated copies of fucli records and
proceedings in all cases where they have
not already been preferred, and will under
take to obtain them for all such of their
fellow-citizens as (hall within 10 days from
this date flirnifh the names of the veflels
' and mailers ; the ports or piaces where;
tried or condemned, with such other infor
mation as the circumftancej of the cafe
may require.
They recommend to those who have al
reddy obtained the copies of the proceed
ings of the Courts to have them examined
by some perfen of le;;al knowledge!; that if
they fliouldbe found defective in any ref
peft the deficiency may be supplied, at the
fame time that the records tire applied for.

At the fpccial request of the secreta
ry of state, the committee appointed
by the merchants of Philadelphia, have
undertaken to obtain copies of the pro-
Sfcedings of the courts in the Britiih
Islands, in the Weft-Indies : Bermuda,
the Bahamas, and in their colonies in
North America, upon the cases of A
mertcan velfels, and property' tried in
the courts in any of the said Islands, or
colonies.
The Committee therefore give this ;
public notice, that all persons coucemcd
who have not already obtained authen
tic copies of the preceedings, in their
particular cases, may furnifh the Secre
tary of State with the names cf the
vcflHs, and matters, the places wlieie
the trial was had, the time when, and
such other circumstances as the nature
of the cafe may require.
