Mr. Henry Newburg, employed
in Clark fe Co.'s saw mill, had three
fingers taken off by coining in contact
with the saw while tightening the
screws with a wrench, last Saturday.
The operation of trimming the fin
gers and putting them in shape was a
painful task, or would have been but
for morphine administered. The
thumb and little finger were saved,
and about an inch of the three other
below the hand joint, so he will not
bo very bad oft' when the members
get well. Mr. Newburg had an acci
dent policy, which, will be of service
to him during his "1 ay off."
At the funeral of an Indian brave
near Win nemucca, Nevada, the wile
of the deceased was killed and buried
with him. This incident was com
mented upon somewhat unfavorably
by the Rattle Mountain Mwcagvr,
and as a result, a member of the tribe
implicated, Captain Bob by' mime,
called to see the editor aud make an
explanation. Rob admitted being
present at the funeral and that the
squaw was killed. He stated, in jus
tification of the sacrifice, that she
was the wife of the dead buck, was
too old to work or do anything for
herself, and was looked upon as a
witch. He thought this explanation
should satisfy all the whiles. He de
clined to definitely state the method of
the killing, but suggested, "Mebbc,put
'em head on big stone and heap mash
'em." "This," says the San Fran
cesco Ada, "is an original, as well us
aboriginal, way of disposing of old
and helpless widows. While relatives
of the ancient relict, more civilized,
would have sent her to the poorhouse
perhaps."

Special Despatch to tho Press.
Washington, May 1. It is said that
at least five hundred of the employees
of the Census Office will be removed
before the end of the fiscal year, there
being no use for their services after
that time. At least another year will
be required to complete the census
statistics in shape to be published.
The great bulk of tho work is now
veiy nearly completed. An immense
force of clerks was required to tabu
late the statistics of population, arrang
ing the male and female population,
under appropriate heads, reviling the
returns of enumerators, etc. Quite a
number of removals have been made
during the past two weeks. The Di
visions of Railroads hat been con
solidated with the Division of Wealth
and Taxation, aud both divisions will
be under the superintendence of Mr,
Robert P. Porter. There is quite a
sentiment iu fovor of maintaining a
separate Census Bureau in Washing
ton as a perpetual institution. Only a
small Torccwould be required to see
that the very valuable records of the
Bureau are properly perserved and to
map out work for future censuses,
which would greatly facilitate the
operations of the immense machinery
which is called into play every de
cade. Heretofore the record of the cen
sus, apart from those published, have
been left to the harsh mercies of mice
and mildew in the damp basement of
tbo Interior Department.

new production, 7,032 barrels; dry
