Professing to be an honest man, the
candidate of an honest organization I
favor honest money.
The volume of the currency should
be regulated by legitimate demand,
and not by the requirements of bank
rupts and wild speculators.
The currency should be redeemable
as early as the exigencies of the Gov
ernment will permit, in the currency
recognized by all civilized nations.
The contracts of the Government
should be held as sacred as the con
tracts of individuals, and the bonds,
theevidence of its indebtedness, should
be paid according to the understand
ing between the Government and the
lender. Speouh at Butler, Sept. 2,
1878.
Our Nominations.
To-day we place the county ticket at
the head of tins column, and will say
a'few words as to the candidates :
E. M. GRANT,
for State Senator, was placed in nom
ination by a unanimous vote of the
Conferees who met at this place last
week Tuesday. He is a resident of
Foxburg, Clarion county, and is very
popular at home. An uncompromising
Republican, and a young man of good
business qualifications, he comes be
fore the people, fresh from the people,
and, with all his elements of success,
is a formidable candidate. By strict
attention to his own business, while
yet a young man, he has amassed a
considerable fortune. A gentleman of
pleasing address and good record, he
will undoubtedly poll a large vote.
w. w. AMES,
for Representative, is a popular young
lawyer of St. Mary's, where he has
been engaged in business for several
years. Ho is at present a member of
the Town Council, a fact which at
tests to his popularity. His character
for honesty is good, and with the vote
he is bound to get in the borough of
Bt. Mary's and Benzinger township,
his chances for election seem good.
A. E. GOFF,
for Treasurer, is a farmer and an old
resident of the county, and has a host
of friends. For integrity, honesty and
ability, he stands the peer of any can
didate in the field.
W. H. OSTERHOUT and S. W. MOYER,
for Commissioners, the one a tanner,
the other a farmer. Mr. Osterhout has
filled the office of Commissioner ac
ceptably for three years, and is so well
acquainted with the people of the
county that no word of commendation
is needed from us. A man whose word
is as good as his bond, and who keeps
every business engagement with strict
punctuality, whose open-handed char
ity is proverbial, the interests of the
county will be safe in his hands. Mr.
Moyer is an old resident, and would
All the position with ability and
fidelity.
THOMAS IRWIN,
f Spring Creek, and
J. J. TAYLOR,
of Fox, for County Auditors, are both
well known to our readers, and will, if
elected, be efficient officers.
The Indianapolis Journal says : We
say the Republicans of Indiana can
tteat the combined forces of the Dem
ocrats and Nationals this year. They
not only can, but will. They would
do it if the election would take place
to morrow, and they will do it fur more
certainly in October. Every day that
passes the Democratic party in Indiana
is becoming more demoralized, and the
National party is losing strength.
Every day that passes the Republican
party is gaining ground and votes. It
has not been in as good shape for many
years past as it is to-day in respect of
organization, effectiveness of party
machinery, and harmony and hope
fulness of feeling.
The fall campaign has also set in
vigorously at Franklin and Marshall
College. Roystering students smashed
in Professor Kiefer's parlor windows
the other night, and, when he appear
ed, treated him much in the same
manner as the bad boys in the Bible
did Elijah.

Employment for Ladies and Gen
tlemen at Home.
Our attention was recently attracted by
an advertisement in another paper to the
" American Housekeepers' " Scale and the
eitremely low price induoed us to send for
one to use in our kitchen.
We find the scale the most convenient and
valuable household article we have! It is
worth five times its cost, in testing grocers'
packages, putting up preserves, making
cake. etc. W. H. Thompson & Co., No,
235 Washington street, Boston, Mass., are
the manufacturers, and they have the most
complimentary Testimonials of the Soale
possible to b written. They have as yet
no General Agent for this County ; and as
the Scales are sold exclusively by canvass
era to families, we cheerfully recommend
the article for the benefit of our numerous
lady readers, and parties wanting honor
able employment.
We would eay that the " Church Journal,
N. Y., "Christian Union," N. Y., "Frank
Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper," New York,
' Church Union," N. Y.,Buston "Traveler"
'Herald" and "Post," and hundreds of
other papers, all speak in the highest praise
of the Scale, its low price, and convenience
to Housekeepers.
Weighs up to 24 pounds, and costs $1.50
prepaid or about one-half that of any
other Platform Scale in the United States
Where is the man who wants the exolu.
