Under the Revised Statutes of the
United States, Sections, 8232, 8237,
3238, and 8239. every person engaged
in any business, avocation, or employ
ment, which renders him liable to a
special tax. is required to procure and
place and keep conspicuously in his e-
taoiustiment or place oj ouginess a
stamp denoting the payment of said
special tax for the special-tax year be
ginning May 1, 1878. Section 3244,
Revised Statutes, designates who are
liable to special tax. A return, as pre
scribed on Form 11, is also required
by law of every person liable to special
tax as above. Severe penalties are
prescribeU for non-compliance with
the foregoing requirements, or for
continuing in business after April 80,
1878, without payment of tax.
