THURSDAY. DEC. 20, 1877.
Wellington, December U. The
ruBt Office Department has iul'onm
tlon that a case of alleged Improper
Bale of stamp by the postmaster lit
Stockton, Me., which was carried be
fore tho U. S. Court at Portland an a
test case, has resulted In the convic
tion and seutence of J. F. Frye, the
postmaster. Judge Fox la reported
as holding that, under present postal
laws, postmasters making Illegal sale.o
of damps by discount or exchange for
goods can be punished. The depart
ment will lake advantage of 'his fact
to prosecute other postmasters guilty
of like offenses.
New York December 11. A new
telegraph company that is supposed to
be in opposition to the Western Union
has filed articles of incorporation with
tho County Cierk here. It is to be
called the Continental, and its first
..wires ore to be stretched between New
York and Philadelphia. Its capital is
to be ten millions of dollars, of which
James L. Shaw and X. J Baldwin, of
Philadelphia, take 1G0 shares each,
and Albanus L. AVorthington, ot
Trenton, 80,000 shares. The shares
are twenty-five dollars. Alfred Nel
son, former treasurer of the Atlantic
and Pacific, is President and Juuics U
Smith manager.
New York, December 11. The
grand jury to-day indicted Sherman
lloardwell, president of the broken
Cluirmontbttviiigs Bank, for perjury
in swearing to bank statements that
were untrue or falsified. This even
ing detectives from the District Attor
ney's office arrested Boardwell in his
mansion, at No. 405 Bergen avenue,
Je.iscy City. He asked to be detained
in his home and pleaded for an inter
view with a lawyer, but these requests
were denied and lie was taken to the
- Jersey City Police Station and locked
up tor the night- Bordwell lived in
great style.
Newark, December 13. The excite
ment to-day extended to nil the sav
ings banks, but subsided townri
night. The Newark Savings Institu
tion paid nil applicants eighteen pel
cent. The amount drawn was S25.Wi
and $2,H)0 were newly deposited. The
managers express confidence that the
depositors will ultimately lose noth
ing. The Howard Institution paid de
positors iu full as fust as they appeared
and the managers have determined to
continue payments as rapidly as their
clerical force will allow. The Dime
Bank checked their run by requiring
three months' not ice and hope to re
sume payments soon if not suddenly
compelled to convert securities. The
German Bank, a small institution
not yet affected, but will adopt the
three months' notice rule if pressed.

A difpatch from Binghauiplon, 'ew

'For two years piist. the (lecisi en in

and also tho custodian of his will, thr
money was paid to her, she first giving an
indemnity bond with two i-uteties. I it
March. 1875, a Mrs HaL.brouclt presented
the lost bank book to the bau'n and de
manded the money. The bank retuaed to
pay her the amount, aud she begun the pro

Erwin bad niado her a prcseut of the book
only a short time before he died. There
was no proof that he had dor.e so, but the
jury's verdict is that Mrs. llatbrottclt is
entitled to ihe principal and interest of the

The Dandelion and Mandrake Pills,
made by E. K. Thompson, are a very
mild tonic and diuretic, stimulating
the liver to secrete the bile and acid
which forms about the torpid organ,
passing from thence into the blood, af
fecting the heart, stomach and digi s
tive organs. We recommend taking
one pill every night for 20 or 30 days,
as a tonic and cleanser of the stomach,
without regard to moving the bowels,
for when we produce a healthy action
of the stomach, we havo overcomo the
great cause of chronic constipation
which afflicts so many middle-aged
people, brought on by over-eating, or
improper and lnaigcstioie ioou.
