office. In Ridgway, In said county, on the first
Monday of January, A. D. 1877, being the
first day of the month, which was a
holiday, we adjourned to Tuesday. January
2d, 1HT7, at which time wo proceeded with the
sottloment, and do hereby certify that wo
have carefully examined, audited, settled and
adjusted the accounts of the commissioners
of the Kane, Rlrgway and St. Mary's State
Road, and find it correct, as set forth In tho
foregoing report.

butcher shop on Tuesday lust. The
windlass handle slipped and struck
him a severe blow across the hand.

The largest gas vein ever struck in
the oil region has been found on the
Gibson farm. The roaring it is said,
resembles Niagara and can be hear dis
tinctly a distance of nine miles.
There is no kind of printing, cither

During the past fortnight the Erie
Kuilroad Company has carried over
its road over one hundred ami tweiity
flve tons of gunpowder, delivered at
the national stock yards at Gutten

There are indications in all quarters
of the 8tate of a revival of the iron in
terest with the opening of Spring.
The Thomas and Crane Iron Com
panies have recently received large
contracts. The former company has
also negotiated a sale of 10,000 tons of
iron at about $18 per ton.
The Republican Voters of Ridgway
Township are requested to meet in
caucus, on Saturday evening next, ut
the office of J. O. W. Railey, at 7
o'clock, for the purpose of putting in
nomination a township ticket to be
voted for on Tuesday next. A full
attendance is requested.

ChiUls, proprietor of the Ledger,
Philadelphia, a copy of the Public
Ledger Almanac. The Almanac is
not published for sale but is
given to each subscriber to the Pub
do Ledijcr. An edition of one hun
dred and ten thousand copies of the
Almanac was printed this year.
The performing elephant, "Betsy"
of Forepaugh's circus, which is
wintering ut Germautown, gave birth
to a baby elephant eighteen inches
high early Friday morning. It was
walking about by noon of that day.
This is said to be the only elephant
ever born in America. Its mother is
eleven feet high.
John McCready who works In the
saw mill at Whistletown, jumped on
the local engine Tuesday afternoon
with the intention of coming to Ridg
way. He changed his mind, how
ever, and concluded to wait for mail
which was due in a short time. In
Jumping from the local engine his foot
caught in the step and he was thrown
to the ground breaking his right arm.
He is now at Whistletown and doing
as well as could be expected.
We have now on hand the follow

County orders are now at par,
thanks to our efficient County Treas
urer aided by our worthy County
Commissioner. It is a aubje -tfor con
gratulation on all hands that County
orders arc ut par and worth dollar for
dollar. The statement shows county
orders outstanding to the amount of
$338,08. Since which time Treasurer
McCuuley has paid all orders pre
sented, aud gives it as his Judgment
that not more-than $100. or $150 in or
ders are yet outstanding. He has also
slightly overpaid the county fund.
We are authorized to announce the
name of Wm. A Derby as a candidate
for the office of Supervisor at the en
suing township election. We believe
he will perform the duties of this of
fice, if elected, faithfully and with an
eye single to the best interests of the
township, and we will guarantee that
the roads will be well worked at the
least expense, and at the proper sea
sou of the year, and that the funds of
the township will be Judiciously ex
pended. Anotberthing Will has long
been a resident of this place, and this
is the first time we have ever known
blm to be a candidate for any position.
The Electoral Commission are now
considering the Louisiana case, and
we will be able to give their report In
our next issue. The State of Florida
has been counted for Hayes, and now
it is thought that the decision of the
Louisiana case will settle the matter.
The Democrats are hoping against
hope in the Oregon case, but it seems
now as though the lnaguration of
Hayes & wheeler is hat question of
time.

The Election of Assessors.
H. W. Buser, of Hummelstown,
who had written to Attorney General
Lear as to the terms of assessors, has
received the following reply :
Dear Sir: You will elect all of
ficers at the election this month whose
terms expire on or before the first
Monday of April next. Those who
were elected in February, lo7'3, and
whose terms expire between the first
Monday of April, 1877, and the first
Monday of April, 1878, have their
terms extended to the first Monday of
April, 1878. Their successors, by the
act of March 10, 187o, must be elected
in February, 1878.
This applies to assessors whose
terms would have expired the day af
ter the election 1877 in November.
Their terms are extended to April,
1878. And the constables will be con
tinued to the same time, if they were
sworn in after the first Monday of

Youthful Uurglars.
jiionoay afternoon complaint was
made before Esquire Fullerton, by G
D. Messenger, et al. charging Willie
Malone, Willie Hartman, Wilson
Greeuawald, Louis Ithiues, and
Barney Fannin, with burglarizing the
store of Mrs. J. C. Houk. Constable
Morgester arrested the culprits, and a
hearing was had during the afternoon
and evening. From the evidence and
confessions of the boys the crime was
committed on or about the 10th inst
although the boys had been in the
store several times since. The en
trutice was made through the cellar
window, and up the cellar stairs
where the door was forced open with
a stove poker. Gloves, and other
goods were taken out and hid in an
old barn in the rear of the store, and
in various other places about town.
The store has been closed fur some
time, and the boys had a clear field
until they were accidentally discov
ered. Willie Malono and Willie
Hartman were held in $100 each for
their appearance at the next term of
court. Willie Malono was released
with his father as ball, aud Willie
Hartman was committed in default of
ball. TJie other boys were discharged
and we adviso them to hereafter try
and keep out of bad company, as they
like old dog tray, may come to grief.
Willie Malone was only discharged at
the late term of court for burglarizing
the M. E. Church, and should now
for the beiififlt of the town, and es
pecially the boys, be sent where he
will do the mosf good for the State.
We received a correspondence from
Brookston, Forest Co. too late for our
last issue, and also an advertisement
offering $7o reward for the arrest of
one Edward D. Stone, since which
time we nave oeen intormeu by our
correspondent that Stone has been re
captured. "On Saturday morning
