One of our citizens has lost
valuable dog, it was a setter; we are
authorized to offer ten cents reward,
payable in pups of the same breed at
one dollar each.
Last Wednesday, D. B. Day, left
this place to attend a medical school at
Cincinnati. Dudley proposes to have
his name read D. B. Day M. D, in the
course of time.
The school tax of Ridgway township,
for 1875, is only about one half that ot
1874; omitting the building tax is the
reasod for the reduction. This will be
good news to our long-suffering tax pay
ers.
Horace Littlo and W. S. Hamblin,
have purchased the western half ot the
Service & Wheeler block, and have also
purchased A. Cummiog a stock ot
groceries, etc., They intend to continue
the grocery business.
The new Constitution Rives each
elector the right to .vote for two can
didates for the ofllie of Commissioner
and Auditor, but no one has a right
to cast two ballots for one man

James McGinnis has purchased of R.
V. Kioic, twenty-one feet front, on
Main street, between Service & Wheel
er's block and the barber shop, for
81000. He has commenced excavating
a cellar, and proposes to put up a build
21x70 feet, two stories high, to be used
for a billiard saloon, eto.
The work of exhuming the bodies, in
the old school house burying ground,
and re-intering them in the now ceme
tery, was commenced week before last.
Coffins that had been in the ground for
twenty years were found to be in 4 good
state of preservation; while one buried
thirty yearn was almost entirely con
sumed.
"A Century After" is the title of an
elaborate centennial work on Philadel
phia and Pensylvania. Part four is on
our tablo and opens with an article on
Cape May, which is very interesting.
The work is illustrated and will be com
pleted in fifteen parts at fifty cents each.

Last Saturday evening, Hon. A. N
Taylor of Smethport, me, with a terrible
accident, which must necsssarly prove
fatal. It seems that Mr. Taylor and
Hon. John Backus had been out riding
Saturday afternoon, when some part ot
the wagon broke, but the occupants
were saved from injury by jumping from
the carriage. Mr. Taylor returned
home in the evening, and being fatigued
it is suoDosed he retired early. Mrs.

Tavlor with her son were at the store
until 11 o'clock, aud when they weat to
their home they found Mr. Taylor abed
and sleeping very poundly. Mrs. Tay
lor was called to another part of tho
house, and was absent but a few minu
tes and when she returned to the bed
room found that Mr. T. was not in bed;
she then went into aaother room and dis
covered a back door open, and on going
to the door heard her husband groaning
on the ground some fifteen feet below
Assistance was called and the injured
man takon to his room, when it was dis
covered that his back was broken. Mr
Taylor was conscious but unable to tell
how the accident occurred. It is sup
posed that he was dreaming about the
carriage accident and jumped through
the door, supposing he jumping from
the wagon.
Mr. Taylor, is a gentleman of large
means and doing an extensive business
His death will be a severe loss to Smeth
port and McKean county, having busi
ness relations with a large portion of the
population.

The commissioner of internal revenue
has deoided that promissory notes made
and used in the ordinary oourse of ousi-
ness according to the custom of banks
aud 'merchants need not be stamped
But if notes are in any way substituted
for checks and kept as vouohers they
are held to be suoject to the (two cent)
stamp tax.
We were presented by Mrs. Derby
with a basket of delicious grapes of the
Isabella variety. This year Mrs Derby
raised about two bnshels and
they ripened very well. We have
heard it said that grapes would not
ripen in this climate: and now that it is
demonstrated they will, why not plant
more of them; there certainly is no more
delicious fruit than the grape, and if
they oan be raised hero successfully
there is no reasou why the price should
not come within the teach of all and in
stead of Belling at from ten to eighteen
cents a pound be plenty at three to
four cents.

and it undoubtly had a very excellent
influence. Of all educational accom
plishments, a proper knowledge of the
orthrography of our own language is
certainly the most durable, and of all
defioienoies in our educational methods,
that relating to thin study is the most
marked. And we were therefore going to
say that whether tho spelling excitement
came about through the advertising ef
forts of the Webstor publishers or not,
one thing is quite oloar, and that is that
there is nothing that has helped to
stimulate the wide-spread interest in the
subjoct. or that is so nearly a Speller's
Vadn Mccum as Webster's Pocket Dic

Smart-weed far Tannins Purposes.
A writer in the St. Louis Globe
Democrat is enthusiastic over the dis
covery that a variety of the smartweed
which grows wild in Missouri in suoh
pro(u9sion ai to be a nuisance, surpasses
bark in its tanning qualities. As its
only cost is that resulting from the labor
of cutting and stacking it, say $5 a ton
while bark costs in that State $112 per
ton, it is argued that hereafter millions
of hides will annually be made into
leather iu the West instead ot being
seot to the Eastern Status to be tanned.

Eastern capitalists and meohauics for
work which could just as well be done
at home. It is said that this plant
yields at least 10 por cunt, of tannic
acid an analysis by the Nebraska
State chemist gives nearly 22 per centj
from the root aud 17 to 10 percent
from tho plant hemlock and oak bark
vieldtng lrom 11 to io per cent. !5ui
even if the results stated by the Ne
braska chemist are correct, it docs not
follow that this wood will make as good
leather as bark. Tnere are peculiar
properties for making good leather
found in bark that, so far as is generally
known, bav never been equaled in any
other material. More or less tannio
aoid is fround in almost every plant that
grows, and in some the precentajje of
tanning is as high as from 44 to 50 per
cent. Yet the leather produced by the
use of these plants has never come into
favor, and that made from some of them
is not only bad in color aud defective io
other respects, but is liablo to return to
a condition very like that of raw hide,
which is not the case with bark-tanned
leather. The Glule Democrat corres
pondent says, however, that actual ex
periment has shown that leather of bet
ter quality thau bark-tanned leather can
be made with this weed in fifteen days
les.i time, and that one ton of the plant
will tan 400 pounds of leather, while
the same weight ol bark will produce
but 175 pounds.
Senatorial Nomination.
As will be found elsewhere tho Sena
torial conference for tho senatorial dis
trict composed of the counties of Clarion
Forest, Elk and Cameron counties, nom
ioated.for that position Mr. William P.
Fmley, of Clarion county, Mr. Fioley
has fur many years been a resident of
Salem township, this county. In ad
dition to having one of the best culti
vated farms io this section of country,
he has also for several years beon en
gaged iu the oil business. He has been
successful to an unprecedented degree.
Io addition to his large producing in
terests, he is the treasurer of the At
lantic Pipe Line, which was built by
the producers. lie is regarded as a
representative man of that interest, who
will acknowledge the compliment at
the November eleotion by casting a
solid vote for him, He is so favorably
known throughout the county for in
tegrity, moral worth, and first class
business oapacity, as to need but slifct
comment from us. Representing as he
does, the Republican party oi the dis
trict, and one of its greatest industrial
interests, we have good reason to hope
for his eleotion. No better mao could
be selected for the position. If moral
worth, executive ability, and fitness be
any reoommendation to tbe people of
the other counties composing the dis
trict. Mr. Finley can be eleoted. Tbe
nomination is a good one, and tbe peo
ple will do themselves honor in choos
ing bim for tbe position by their votes.

An effort is being made by some of
our sportsmen to get up a grand hunt
ing tournament some time about the
middle of October. The party is to
consist of sixty hunters thirty on a
side and a great slaughter of game 18
anticipated. The losing party is to pay
for asupper for the entire crowd. We
hope they may be successful in getting
up a good party for the sport. A meet
ing is to be called to make the prelimi
nary arrangements as soon as a sujcient
number of marksmen enter the list. -Ctearfield

The city fathers of Corry have
placed the following card to tramps on
exhibition in the prominent places of
the town: "Notice is hereby given that
all vagrants and tramps caught within
the limits of the city of Corry, are liable
to a fine of not leBS than $5 or more
than $50 and imprisonment for 30 days,
and in default of payment of the fine
aforesaid, they will be required to labor
on tbe strees for any period not exceed
ing 60 days. Hereafter this ordinance
will be strictly enforced. Corry, Pa.,
September 17, 1875." It is worthy of
being copied in every town io the
country.
