THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1874.
The tobacco statistics ot the world,
could the; be seen in one mass, would
astonish the economists aa well as the
moralists. France consumes annually
43,000,000 pounds of smoking tobneco
8,000,000 pounds of cigars say 850,
000,000 in number; 17,000,000 pounds
of snuff; 2,500,000 pounds of chewing
tobacco, tnd 1,000,000 pounds of roll
tobacco, which is cither cuioked, chewed
or snuffed.
Safety of the National Dank
System. The receiver of the Dank ol
Mie Commonwealth, New York, which
failed September 20th. of lust year, an
nounces the final payment of twenty pei-
ceut. to depositors aud all other credit
ors, except shareholders, oo the 20th
inst., eighty per cent, having been pre"
viously paid. This 13 another proof of
the safety to general creditors of the na'
tional bank system. There can scarcely
be loss to others than the stockholders,
a fact calculated to make them vigilant
The State Contesting Doard of Ken
tucky has decided that Thomas L
Jones, Dcmoeiat, who was elected Clerk
of the Court of Appeals by fifty thous'
and majority over his Republican com
petitor in August last, is ineligible, by
reason of his having accepted a challenge
to fight a duel five years, ago the State
Constitution so providing. This is the
first decision of the kiud since the a do p.
tion of the Constitution, and was ren
dered by a board composed wholly ' ot
members of the same political party as
.Mr. Jones. The decision will necessi
tate a new election. Pittsburgh Ttle
graph.
The official vote of New York at the
late election for Governor, shows a total
of 787.903 votes cast.or 49,812 less than
at the gubernatorial election in 1872
The vote stood, Tilden 416,343, Dix
301,406, Clark, Prohibition, 10,214,
Tilden's majority over Dix is 54,937
It is curious that Pix's majority ove.
Kernan two years ago showed very little
difference; it was 53,451. For the firstr
time for many years, the Democrats car
ried the State outside of the cities of
New York and Drooklyn. This fact in
dicates more forcibly than anything re
have seen the sweep of the late political
revolution.
The Forty-fourth Congress will come
into existence on the fourth day of
March, 1875, but its regular session
will not begin, according to the present
law, until the first Monday on the follow
ing December. Without a change in
the law, the members recently elected,
will not therefore, except in the im
probable contingency ot an extraordi
nary session callcd,by the President,
Lave any practical share in the legisla
tion of the country until nine months
after they legally take office, aud
thirteen months after their election.
This is an awkward and anomalous situa
tion. Parliamentary government uo
whero offers any parallel to it. N. Y.
Evening Post.
Those who talk of giving up the Tie
publican party, oo account of one defeat,
fchould look at the exunple of the Demo
cratic party.. The reverses of that
party began in 1856, and although they
elected their President, that year, they
began to go backwards from that date,
and they were completely overthrown
in 1860. let in all that time, they
have kept up their organization, and
have Etood by it through evil and
through good report. And why? De
cause the rank and file of the party be
lieved iu its principles, and adhered to
them, whether successful or defeated.
Can we not imitate them, so tar at least,
as their fidelity is concerned' Our prin
ciples remain unchanged and are us
worthy of devotion es ever.

Every year increnses tlie popularity
of this valuable Hair Preparation;

assure our old patrons that it is kept

By its use, the hair grows thicker and
