EDITORIAL NOTES.
Gen. Joe. Ilawley, ol the Hartford
Courant, aud of Congress, has a great
weakness for his Sharpe's rifle. He is
easily one of the dozen best shot in the
country, and would rather bo shooting at
a mark down at Creedaioor than writ
ing editorials or making speeches any
day.
Oleomargarine. Artifical butter
making Las grown to such an extent in
the vicinity of Boston as actually to
create a scarcity of tallow in that city
It was,- at tho outset doubted whether
the art;5cial butter would find a place in
our homes tod on cur tables. But ap
pearance apparently has proved that
the butter factories cai mako tallow
tasta as neoi' like butter as many formers
mako butter Uite like tallow.
Gov. Dix is 76 yen.ra old, and, as
some who do not tno'7 him think, too
old to raako a 'ively run for t';e Presi
dency. "Oet sach rand tho following
paragraph from tho Auburn (N. Y.)
Advertiser of ono day last week:
"When Gov. ftix began his addvess in
leply to Mayor Rcps's welcome at the
depot to-day, in his full, clear, round
voico, which ceuld be heard distinctly
in evsry quarter of the spacious depot,
we overheard a gentleman remark to a
friend; 'Why' I'd made up my mind
that the .Governor wag a man sixty years
of ago or more, but 2 guess he isn't
more than fifty."
The wind that wafted the Booklyn
scandal over the country carried good
to the lawyers at least. The New York
limes has been making a compilation
of the cases growing out of it that
will come before the courts. The result
is as follows; "Tilton has brought an ac
tio against Mr. Beecher to recover dam
ages for the wrong alledged to have
been done him; Mr. Beecher brings
an action against; Mr. Tilton Miss Edna
Dean Proctor brings an action against
Mr. Moultou; Mr. Bowen brings three
actions against tho Brooklyn Eagle; Mr.
Monlton threatens an action against Mr.
Beecher; Miss Proctor brings an action
aginBt the Daily Graphic; Mr. Tilton
brings an action against tho World and
the Tribune; a grano jury has indicted
Mr. Tilton and Mr- Moulton." There
are some twelve suits in all in the
above list, and the end is not yet.
Few York, October 5. An unprece
dented calamity occurred yesterday. A
drove of wild Texas streers, being driven
through the streets, escaped from their
drivers, scattered through tle streets and
avenues of the lower part of the city, and,
maddened by the shouts of men and boys,
rushed blindly in every direction. Many
persons were injured by them. Over forty
casualties are reported. It is not known
how many of the injured will die, but some
are badly injured internally and others
will be disfigured for life. The excitement
was indescribable. Crowds were in th
streets armed with pistols, clubs, swords,
and knives, but all confused, not knowing
what to do first. The police appeared to
be as much deinorlized as the citizens.
The cattle dashed down the streets, into
Btore windows, anywhere, to escape tho
exeited orowds Burrouuding and following
them. Pistols were fired recklessly and
several pesons wers injured by shots.
Several steers escaped to tho river, jumped
overboard, and were drowned.
Parker's Landing, Oct ber 10. Yes
terday afternoon another strike was
made in the Buttler oil regions on what
is known as the Parker Farm.
The well is called the Parker No. 2
and it was reported to be flowing at the
rate of 2.00J) barrles a day, although
the latter statement is 6omewhat dis
credited.. Latter information states
that the well is dow flowing about 500
!er day.
Throughout tho city fences and out
buildings were destroyed, branohes torn
from the trees, and during the bight of
the storm the air -was filled with slate
and tin stripped from roofs, making the
Btreetb impassable. Tie massive brick
walls of the Dew theater which had just
been completed with the exception of
putting on the roof, and from its posit
ion in the burnt distriot was exposed to
the full force of tho galo, were leveled
with the street.
TUP, HOHSY AGAI1T.
At the adjournment of congress last
spring, when the currency question was
left in an unsettled condition, and as
everybody understood opened for con
sideration just so soon as oongress should
got together, there was a hopo that tho
political events of the summer and fal
would furnish Buch an expression ot
publio opinion as to give that body
something to work upon the coming
winter.
This hope has not been realized.
There has been an unreserved expres
sion of publio opinion, but it has been
such a sadly mixed matter that it would
puzzle tho tuost astute poltician to get
anything ont of it. There is no har
mony of parlies on tho vital question,
and in many instances the party resolu
tions have been tho result of sectional
wants, while in others the money part
of the platform seems to havo been
caught at bap-hazard.
Congress will no at tho currenov
again upon its reassembling in Decem
ber with nothing more definite) to work
upon than it had before. Tho Presi
dent will tenaciously adhere to his con
traction theories, while congress with its
inflation majority will endeavor to retain
as much as possible ot its own theories
whilo constantly endeavoring to do
something to meet tho approval of the
President.
Whatever may be attempted it is cer
tain that only disaster can result from
any effort to enforce the speedy re
sumption suggestions of tho President,
and whilo such a thing is considered it
may be well for those who do this legis
lating to look a littlo into the financial
legislation of other countries, aud its
effects. Here, for instance, is England.
In 1797 that country suspended speoio
payments. Six different times law8
were passed to enfcice a resumption,
eaeh time respiting disastrously, and
nullified by the inability to make water
run up hill. Notwithstanding the de
feat ot Napokon, France reouperated
while England struggled in despondency
for many years. As lato hs lS.lti she
again 3xed the period of resumption,
and within one mouth gold advanced
twenty per coat., and that year the
bankruptcies increased fifty-five per
cent. The wild disorder which soon
prevailed, produced, according to his
torians, "'a state of suffering greater than
England had known since the Norman
conquest." A stay law was again hast
ily rushed through Parliament, defer
ring action until July, 1818; whereupon
business revived, 'and bankruptcies de
clined fifty per cent. Still the disas
ters had been such that there was a
lack of confidence. The government had
learned by experience, and dared not
legislate against the immutable laws of
nature Thj Bulhonists, however, car
ried through a compromise resolution, iu
1819, providing for partial resumption
in May, 1820, and for entire resumpt
ion in May 1821. England ngnin took
tho alarm, and the people paid the pen
alty. Again the time was extended,
and it was not until 1821 that specie
payment was finally and completely re
sumed. Then began that terrible re
volution which carried misery every
where, and which tended rapidly to re
duoe Eiighnd to a stata of barbarism.
It was then that fortunes of a hundred
thousand pounds could not find pur
chases at ono-twentioth that sum; it was
then those terrible bread riots commen
ced throughout the kingdom; that sol
diers had to be stationed before every
granery; that stroug men, helpless wo
men aud innocout childem died of huu
ger and froze with cold. Then
commenoed that wide-spread d'sui'der
and uuiversal suffering, such as this
country certainly docs not desire to
iuvite.
There is a lesson in history which
may serve to guida the action of our
congressmen even better than any ex
pression of publio opinion among our
people. A most conspicious feature of
that lesson is that speoia resumption
cannot be forced upon any country, and
when the time for it comes there is lit
tle use in passing laws to prevent it. It
is something better regalated by the law
of trade, and refuses to be made sub
servient to statuto law. Willi amsport

There, was a fearful gale in Charles

places sweeping away the pier heads.
Pcbqavivb Pins have become a
settled necessity . with the American
people. Indeed, cathartics always have
been and always must be used, in some
form, by all mankind. In this country,
the pilular form of administration has
been growing in favor since pills were
first made of Aloes and Rhubarb rolled
into a ball. Their high position in the
publio confidence has finally been
secured and fastened into permanency,
by Ayer's Cathartic Pills, the most
skillful combination of medicine for the
diseases they are intended to cure, that
science can devise or art produce.
Those who need pills, no longer hesitate
