1 ,1 TfKNny A. Pausoijs, Jn. Editor TllLll.SUAV, AUGUST 13, 1874. Republican State Convention. The Republicuns of Pennsylvania will hold a SMato llotiventiou nt llarrisburtr. nt noon on Wednesday, August 10. 1874, for tho purpoo of nominating candidates for Lieutenant Governor, Auditor Gcnornl, Secretary of Internal Affairs, and Judgo of tho Supreme Court. Tho representation of the several counties in this Conventiowwill be based on tho apportionment of Senators and Representatives roado by the present Legislature, each Senatorial and Rep resentative district being entitled to delegates equal in number to its repre sentation in the Legislature under said apportionment. RUSSELL ERRITT, Chairman. Ezra Lukens, ) , John M'Cullouoii, f ccy fl; Almost everywhere tho business outlook is enoouraging. Wo have already spoken, says tho Pittsburgh Commercial, of tho brightening pros, poets of tho iron trade in this State and the East, and now wo le.irn from the Toledo Blade, that the rolling mills and furna-jes in Mahoning Valley, Ohio, are starting up, some of them having moro orders than they can fill. This is an other straw showing the goneral cur rent toward a renewal of business pros perity The Attorney General has deoided that the contract for additional service between San Francisco, Japan and China, as provided for in the act of Juno 1st, 1872, is still subsisting and that the Pacific Mail Steamship Compa'y is entitled to have their new iron steam ships inspected with a view of putting them iuto scrvico under such contract. The Secretary of the Navy will there fore designate officers to make the re riuired inspection. The crop report for July irom the Agricultural Bureau, is a very encourag ing one. Winter wheat shows 104 and spring wheat 9G, on a standard average of 100. The average of tho latter has been somewhat reduced by tho ravages of insects, but, as a whole, tho wheat crop will be as largo as could bo desired It is noticeable also that there has been a decided increase in the acreage of sugar cane planted, and its condition is everywhere repotted tibovo the average tho crop, even in the overflowed dis tricts of Louisiana, promising to equal that of last year. Added to abundant crops is a generally marked iucrcaso in the wool clip so that if farmers pro not satisueu wit ii the result ot their years labor they will have to blame something besides Nature. Pittsburgh Tt.!.rjrqh POLITICAL NOTES. Mr. Oresswell, the ex-Postmaster Goneral, is tho latest candidate tor President. Tho Utica Herald is authority for the statement that Senator Fenton is anxious to return to the Republican fold. This, says the New York Herald, "will reduce tho Liberal party to eleven." Ex-Mayor Richard Vaux is spoken of as the probable Demoeratio candidate in tko Fifth Congressional District of Philadelphia. This is the district in which Messrs. llarmer and Myers re side. Tho Conferees of tho Twenty-fifth Congressional district Armstrong. Clarion, Forest, Indiana and Jell'crson counties met at Kittaning on the 21st ult. and continued in cession until Friday morning, tho 24th, when, on the one hundred aud eleventh ballot, Gen. Harry White, of Indiana, was nomi nated; afterward made unanioious. Gov. Woodson niado a speech in Lafayette county, Missouri, the other day, which it was hoped would havo u beneficial effect in inducing the Grang ers to ioin the Democratic party. At the close of tho clfort a particularly at tentive Granger sra3 asked what he thought of it: Pondering a moment, he replied: "It reminds me of one of my cows. Sho raises her tail higher, bellows aud paws tho ground, and makes more fuss than any other crater on tLe farm, and gives less milk." Win. M. Randall, ol Pottsvilio, Ta., "feeling satibfied that tho majority of the Democratic party in Schuylkill county are opposed to tho nomination of James Jl. Ueilly tor Uougress, an nounces himself as an independent can didate. The county is very close, being Democrat by only about two hundred majority, Unless the tactics of last year are pursued, when there were two Democrats, two lepuoncans, ana Labor Reformer for tho Bingle offico ol State Senator, the Republicans will stand a fair chance of sending tho man to Washington. Tho late Stephen A. Douglas' lieuten ant, ex-Congressman William A. Rich ardson of Illinois, has taken the field asainst the action ot the Democratic Central Committee of that Stalo iu pre suming to make a platform lor the party lie declares the action of the Commit tee an impudent piece of usurpation and a gross insult to tho Democracy ol Illinois, and also denounces the uuaucial plunk of the platform. Ilr, luenard sou has an influential standing among a large number of Adams couuty Demo. crats, aud his action, it is thought, will lead to a serious division of sentiment among them. One of the best paying industries of the South is tho manufacture ot artifi cial ice, a branch of trade which is rapi dly extending throughout all tho great cities ot that section ot tho country. 6EHSSAL NOTES. In Ohio women's rights prevail to such an extent that recently a man hitched his wie and step-daughter to o shovel plow and plowed threo and a half acres of corn with them. At Steelmanvillc, N. J., the fisher men during tho last two weeks have caught 553,000 fish, yielding 1,509 gallons of good oil Muskcgan, Mich., suffered from a disastrous fire last Saturday; 200 places of business, and 100 dwellings burned; loss heavy, insurance light. At Trenton, N. J., tho main water reservoir burst, and flooded the streets of that city. 80,000,000 gallons of water escaped, but luckily the damage was slight and no lives lost. Father Began, in charge of the Ca tholic church at Cape May, on last Sab bath denounced the practice of giving sacred coucerts at hotels. His friends turned immediately against him by hold ing an indignation meeting. At tho Parish of Assumption, iu Louisiana, on tho 21st of this mouth, the frightful execution of five men at onco will be witnessed, for the murder of an old flat-boatman. One is a white man, three molattocs, and tho fifth a negro. This will will be tho largest hanging e ver witnessed at one time by a municipality in this country. The coroner's jury in tho case of Katie Currau, at Bostom, rendered n verdict Wednesday, July 20th. It found that she came to her death by the hands of Jessie Pomeroy, and said evi dence submitted corroborated Pomeroy's confession of the crime. Tho jury also found that the body of the girl, either before or after death, was mutilated by some sharp instrument. The Auditor of Illinois, who has been making an examination of the affairs of the Chicago insurance companies, has notified the Attormy General of that State that tho Atlantic and Pacific In surance Company was insolvent and re quested him to take such action in the matter as he deemed necessary, The assets cf the company nro valued at f?20n,0C0 and their liabilities at $ 147, 000. Ens has about completed a reservoir on tho high lands south of tho city which is estimated to contain 32,000, 000 gallons of water when filled. It re quired two million brick to cover its in side surface, and the wall aercs3 its cen ter readies to within sixteen feet of the top. Ihe water is pumped into it from the bay, about three hundred feet below and two miles from it. i Cost of Li- Valuable statistics in regard to the comparative cost of living in America and Europe arc given in the last Mama chusctls LaLor Report: ''One dollar will buy twenty pounds of flour in Boston, one or two pounds more in some European seaports, but the same are considerably less in a majority of the. places compared. In Boston one dollar will buy 5,50 pouods of lresh beef, roast piece. In no place in England will it buy so much by a pound or more, and in Europe still kss, Copenhagen being tho only place given where it will buy mere. Butter in Europe averages a pound more to ihe dollar than here, cheeso less by moro than that except in a few spots. As for potatoes, they are cheaper here than in England, and dearer than in Ireland, or Germany, Seven or eight pounds ot pork for a dollar are sold hero, and not much over half as much can be obtuined for that sum in Europe or England, and no where as much. In rice, milk, and eggs they have the advantago of us. Tea costs less here than in England, but more than on tho other continent. With coffee it is about the same through tho difference is little. Iu sugar the British are a little beter off, tho conti neutals a good deal worse. Coal is cheaper here than in Germany and dearer than in Englaud. Merrimao or common prints are chsapcr hero than in England and Europe. Boots aro about the eamo here as tbero, generally fpeak iug. There are but two or threo palces in England or tho continent where brown sheetings are cheaper than here, whi'e in brown shirtings the foreigners aro better off, Rent, for four-roomed tenements, is from two to four times cheaper in Great Britain and on the continent than in Boston, in Austria nr. . i i t niteen times eceaper. jsoaru also is from onco and a half to twice as cheap in Europe and Great Britain as in Bos. ton."
