Republican Stats Convention.
The Republicans of Pennsylvania will
bold a State Convention at llarrisburj,
at noon on Wednesday, ' August 19,
1874, for the purposo of nominating
candidates for Lieutenant Governor,
Auditor General, Secretary of Internal
Affairs, and Judge of tbe Supreme
Court.
The representation of the several
counties in this Convention will be based
on the apportionment of Senators and
Representatives made by the present
Legislature, each Senatorial and Rep
resentative district being entitled to
delegates equal in number to its repre
sentation in the Legislature under said
apportionment.

day. Gill, on trial for murder in New York
has been sentenced to imprisonment for

The Michigan Central Railroad do

Orders were issued on July 2d, in
Boston, directing the police to kill all
unlicensed dogs found at large within

The assesed value of real and personal
estate in the city and county of New

At Paterson, N. J., on Mondav, Jose
phine Divino, who lives alone with an
iova'id siste-, was fatally burned while
lighting a tiro with coal oil.
Governor Groome, of Maryland, will
commute the sentence of Charles Jones,
tne murderer, to lito imprisonment.

A courier from General Custer's ex
pedition, telegraphing iroru Bismarck
St. Paul, reports the command twenty
miles out on the 4th at noon. The
weather was exceedingly hot. Five sol
diers and one teamster had been sun
struck. Custer'3 orders prohibit firins
on Indians unless they show unmistaka
ble BlgD6 ol hostiliity.
Information telegraphed from Fort
Fetterman states that on the 2d inst, a
party of citszens engaged in hauling
wood near there were fired on by six In
dians, but they escaped. At noon the
same day eight Sioux attacked and shut
Jesse Hampton, sixteen miles from the
same post. He was dangerously woun
ded, and is now ia the hospital at the
fort.
A postponed exhibition of fireworks
took place at New York on Monday
evening. When near its close a pile of
fireworks lying on the ground exploded
by a spark from a rocket, and Roman
candles, bombs, rackets, etc, whizzed
among an assemblage of about five thous
and people. A number of persons were
injured, but only four so seriously as to
require medical attendance. For a short
time there was a feaiful p&Dio ambug the
crowd.
100 houses were unroofed at Wash
ington, by last Saturday's storm.
The maokerel catch at Cnpo Cod is
stated to be far in excess of any within
the last twenty years.
In niaitio, the other day lightning
struck in thirteen places, between the
cities of Bangor and Buckpport.
At the recent Comoncement of the
Boston Latin School, the first Franklin
medal was awarded to a grand nephew
of Daniel Webster.
Kittens aro said to bo taking the
place of poodlo dogs, as occupants of the
elegant equipages which drive along tbe
Bluff, at Newport.
At a Lowell, Mass., slaughter house,
a party oi six consumptives are exper'

decidedly satisfactory results.
Notwithstanding that fireworks were
strictly prohibited by the municipal au
thorities, Boston Mass., passed a very

A German barber has recently cele
brated his sixtieth year of service with

An ex-member of Congress for Missis
sippi was among the recent arrivals as
the Albany Penitentiary. Ho was un
der a sentence of $1,000 fine and two
yiars' imprisonment for embezzlement.
In order to sccuro tho circulation of
its paper at Saratoga on Sunday morn
ing the New York Herald establish
ment runs a special train to that resort,
lcrving the former city at 3.-30 in the
morning of Sunday.
The Brooklyn Eagle credits the re
duction of freights on livestock to the
Grangers. It is said that tho freight
on cattle from Chicago to New Yoik
have been reduced from $135 to $80,
and from Buffalo to New York $80 to
$45 per car load.
According to tho Charleston News,
in only nineteen of the tbirty-two coun
ties South Carolina one hundred and
forty-six square miles of territory have
been sold for State and eouuty taxes,
whilst five hundred and twenty-seven
square miles havn been forfeited to flic
State at tax sales during the current
year.
The age of Simon Sturgas of Allen
town, Pa, was 79 years when he di?d.
fie had been married four times, the
weddings having been on his fortieth,
fift'eth, sixtieth, and seventieth birth
days. His last wife was dead, too, and
it is likely that, had Mr. Stiuges lived
another year, he would have celebrated
his eightieth birthday in the accus
tomed style, because he was a very
methodical old man.
'The shingles upon tho roof of the
First Congregational church in East
Iaddam, Connecticut," says tho New
Haven Register, ''were placed there
seventy-niue years ago, and the root is
s ill tight. The Rev Isaao Parsons was
pastor of this church continuously for
forty-four years, and the late Jeremiah
Ilutchins was deacon forty-seven years
The folks of seventy-five years ago
were pretty good judges of shingles and
parsons."
Tbe final and very severe test of tbe
St Louis and Illinois bridge was made on
July 2d. Fourteen locomotives, averag
ing forty tons each, were placed Ecven on
each side ot each arch, which produced
a deflection of two and a half inches on
the centre arch, which is five hundred
and twenty feet long. Several other
tests were made, all ot which were re
garded a3 highly satisfactory by a large
u&mber of distinguished engineers pres
ent.
A special dispatch to Cincinnati states
that E. J. Thorn and Francis Tierna, oi
Springfield, Ohio, were held to bail at
Wapacoueta, on June 30, to answer a
charge ol forgery. It is said that forced
paper to the amouut of $100,000 has
been negotiated among farmers by these

A most atrocious attempt at poisoning
at Bridgeport, Conn., has iust been
made public. Four young business men

sometime ago, with the agreement tl a

divided among the other three. Twj
of them recently became eo embarrassed
in business that they found it hard to
meet the payments on the policies
About a week ago, a box of stawberries,
poisoned with phosphorus, was sent to
one of the other men, and it is supposed
that one of the insolvents was jjuiltv of

The complainant was the husband, who
charged his wifo with cruel aud itihu-

seems that in this, as in other matters,
there is an important exception to the
rulo, and that there are sometimes husband-beating
wives as well as wife-Lcat-ing
husbands.
Miehael Lahy, who was eraduated
from tho Pittofield (Mass.) High School
last week, at the ago of twenty-one, is a
remarkable young man. When a child,
while playing on the railroad track, he
was run over by a train, and it was neces
sary to amputate both arms so close to
toe shoulders that no perceptible stumps
are left. Nevertheless, he has perse
vered in his studies, has not been absent
or tardy once in his iour years' course
at the High School, and has become
proncient in the highest branches, turn
ing the leaves of his book with his
tongue. He has also acquired a very
legible and even handsome style of pen
mtnsnip. which be executes with his
