ALLEGHENY VALLELY BAIROAD.
We printed in our lateat edition yes
torday, the cleat and eucoinet report
mado to tho stockholders of the Allegh
eny Valley Railroad, by its President,
John Seott. Esq. Considering the em
barrassed condition of the road when he
took charge of it, and tho contusion of
its affairs, he seems to have acted with
great discretion in bringing order out ol
chaos and getting before tho stockhold
ers a lucid statement of the finanoial
condition of the company. When Mr.
Soott assumed control of tho road its
floating debt was assumed to bo two rail
lions, or ia any event not over two and
a half millions, but instead of this it ap
proximated fivo millions (84,823,350),
without counting tho cost of 41,000
shares of Oil Crook Railroad, aggregat
ing over a million and a half of dollars,
which tho company has tho optiou of
funding in an eight per ceut bond.
Counting this, the total floating debt is
set down at $6,360,850. Tho interest
on tho bounded debt is already provided
for in the earnings of tho road, and it
wil require but a few years, president
Scott rnantains, to enable the company
to provido for all its debts, including
bonds issued to secure the floating in
debtedness. In this view, Col. Thomas
A. Scott, President of tho Pennsyl
vania road, who was present, concurred,
and stated his belief that the company
would be able to pay scvon per cent, on
the entire amount of its debt in three
years. 15ut to secure this result, it is
essential the creditors consent to fund
ing the floating debt in a .twenty vears'
bond and permit the company to man
ago its own affairs, without the embar
rassment of needless litigation, in an
economical manner, applying the earn
ings to the liquidation of its debt. A
Committee appointed to report on the
President's exhibit of the affairs of the
Company, recommended that the Penn
sylvania llailroad, as tho owner of a ma
jority of tho stock, and also tho guaran
tors of thirteen aud a half millions of
the company's bonds now selling in Lon
don, take such steps ss will prevent the
discredit of the enterprise, and that a
sis per cent, gold bond bo issuod in or
der to represent the expenditures neces
sary for this purpose, the bond to be en
dorsed by the Pennsylvania Railroad,
and the indebtedness ultimately funded
into the same.
A Committee was appointed to confer
with tho Pennsylvania Railroad Com
pany, and tho meeting adjourned to
meet on tho 30th inst.
The Alleghany Valley Railroad now
owns, including main line and branches,
252 miles of road; its equipment h
valued at $2,200,000 and its Vittskurg
real estate at 800,000, This is sub
ject to a bonded debt of 4,000,000 7
30 bonds on tho main line, 81,000,000
7 per cent, on tho lienuctt branch, aud
83,500,000 5 per cent, second moriagc
bonds duo tho State of Pennsylvania
The interest on this bonded debt
amounts to f 1, 102,000, end this can
easily bo met, even in the present de
pressed state of railroad business, by the
net earnings of tho road,, leaving the
floating debt to-bo provided for. as indi
cated, Caleniar of Political Events.
