Most of the papers of the Stato have
ppoken kindly oi the lute Legislature
and the sentiment is almost general
that the session was an improvement up
on previous ones. After discussing this
subject the Philadelphia Bulletin says
lhe following deserved oompliment to
'he leading officers of the present State
administration.
"In taking leave of the Legislature after
its winter work, it must not be forgotten
that much of ihe good tone that has
pervaded Harrisburg is direotly due to
the influence of Governor Uartranft and
his immediate cabinet officers. To him
to Attorney .General Dimmick and to
the Secretary oi State, Mr, Quay, large
credit is due. Governor Ilartranit and
J i is associates have quietly but remarka
bly revolutionized the atmosphere of the
State Capital; and it is universally con
ceded that Pennsylvania was never bet
ter governed than it is under the quiet,
dignified, upright intelligent adminis
tration of Governor Ilartranit.
Strike for Wages. Ihe late coal
miners' strike at Nelsonvillc, Ohio,
which was attended with unusal violent
demonstration, is unfavorably commen
ted upon by the press generally. That
such events continue to happen, says
the Philidelphia Ledger, is but little
short of marvellous, for it would puzzle
any of the leaders who urge men to
such crime to point to a single instance
in which a "strike has been made suc
cessful by the use of foroe of any kind
whether by obstruction, assault, "mob
ing" shooting, burning, or destruction
Such conduct always arrays the com
mon sense and instincts of safety in
every community against those who re
sort to violence; and it alienates from
the strikes the good feeling of those
whose sympathies are naturally with
the workingmam, in his efforts to get "a
far day's wages for a fair day's work.' '
There were reasons to hope, that in this
country, whoro inteligonco is the
rule and ignorance the excep
tion, the day would have come long
before this, when the Unions of working
men would have learned that the man
who counsels and leads them on to vio
lence is not only a wicked demagogue,
but tho worst enemy of the working
wens Unions.
Steam on the Canals. The ex
periment of steam navigation on the
Erie Canal has proved partially success
ful. Tho engines designed by Mr.
William Uaxter were awarded the first
State prize of 70,000, of which 835,
000 is tj bo paid after he has put seven
boats on the Canal. Tho seoond prize
80,000, in to instalments was awar
ded to tho plan of Mr. Dobbins, of
iJuil'alo, on couuilion that before. draw
ing tho first moiety of the sum ho should
place three boats on the canal. Mr
Baxter, as soon as the commission had
anounced these awards, formed tho
Baxter Steam - Canal Transportation
Company, which already has two boats
running betecn New York and Buffalo.
Their time is from six to seven days
each way, while tho boats drawn by
horse consume from thirteen to fourteen
days. Mr. Dobbins, owner of the second
b3st boat, has consolidated his iuterese
with that of the Baxter Company, and
is building three boats in Buffalo on
Baxters plan. For the Baxter Company
five unfinished boats are on the stocks
in llouout and two in Frankford, Herki
mer county. Before navigation closes
the company will have ten or more boats
running. Their capacity is to bo from
200 to 225 tons, as it has been demon
strated that a boat of larger size cannot
navigate the canal profitably. The
draught will be six feet.
Twenty-two deaths in Harrisburg last
month.

There are 71 national cemeteries and
2S5 cemeteries not national, including
post eemeteries, where soldiers are
buried. The total interments of Union
soldiers in all the cemeteries is 307,
694. Of these the "unknown" num
ber 141,090, the "known" 1CG,G04.
North Carolina contains 35,000,000
acres of land, 6,500,000 of which is
cultivated. A large proportion of the
balance is on one end on mountain sides,
and the remainder is so poor that noth
ing eould be raised on it but tar timber.
The Senate Claims Committee have
agreed to report the House bill with the
amendments appropriating 87,000,000
to pay the awards of the Southern
Claims Commissioners in favor of about
one thousand unionists throughout the
South

a Methodst church in Newburyport,
Mass.: last Sunday the pastor called for

tributed. An unusual quantity of fruit and
vegetables arrived at Baltimore on the
6th instant, resulting in a glut of the
market and general depression in prices
Towards the close of the day the best
strawberries were offered at 8 cents a
quart, and tho commonest kinds for 3
cents.
Monroe county, Indiana, claims the
distinction ot possessing one of the old
est, citizens in the county. He is
named William, Ross, and ho was born
at Gilford Court House, N. C, on the
17th of May, 1759, and is consequently
more than 115 years old. He lives
near Bloomington, and is reported to
enjoy excellent health.
The temperanoe woman of Rhode
Island won a decided victory in the
Senate at Newport last week. About
thirty of them appeared before the vote
on the prohibitory bill was taken, and
presented petitions in favor of the bill
signed by 10,588 persons. The effect
nf the petition and the presence of the
ladies was very preceptible, and the Sen
ate passed the act.
An event which occurred without the
least flourish of trumpets on Monday,
and without attracting any particular at
tention, would have set the whole world
agog a few years ago. This was the ar
rival at Portsmouth, N. II., of the Eng
lish steamship Faraday, with the Am
erican end -of the new Atlantic cable,
the work of laying it from Novo Scotia
having been completed successfully.
The length of the new cable is 3,100
miles, but the deep sea part is yet to be
laid, the Faraday returning at once to
England to commence the work.
When completed, it will probably re
duce the tariff on ocean telegrams from
$1. the present rate, to 25 cents per
word.
