LETTER FROM OHIO.
Cincinnati, Ohio, )
. November 1G, 1873. j
Deau Advocate : The Ku.Kluk
Case in our neighboring city of Ooviou
ton was disposed of yesterday. The ex
amining court, composed ot two Justices,
could not agree, aad the defendants
were discharged. It is a prominent and
and peculiar feature of the decision, that
the Justices in favor of biuding over the
uccuscd is a Democrat, while the other
is o Republican and voted to discharge.
1 am of the opinion the w.etcheJ charac
ter ehcun by the proseoutingj witness,
even by himself on cross examination
his wife beint; the only coroboratiug
witness, and she, it was sheun was in
terror of her husband, having been fre
quently beateu by him would, in itself,
j ustify any j ury in acquitting the defend
ants; without paying any regard to the
veryjpositive recogBiting be made or
Bayshe made of the parties at the tiuio
of the alleged raid, or in the court house.
I don't exactly mean that if he were nut
Ku-Kluked, that she could have been ;
but 1 do mean that a little tar and feath
ers would very well become him. Some
ten years ago he Jwas iudicted for an
outrage on bis eister-in-law, and escaped
the penitentiary only because the un
fortunate womau died before bis trial
would have been belJ. I very well be
lieve that many cases of Ku-lvlukian
occur in the Southern Slates; but many
cases are also trumped up, and this case
was one of the latter kind. I was in
Court during the trial, aud think if all
Ku-Kluk were as well looking men and
shrewd as good characters as these were
did, a little infusion of them every where
would work no great harm. UuderBtaod
uie, 1 am speaking only of the merits of
the case in our own neighborhood; and
hot by any means, palliating outrages
whether done in the name of Kentucky
Ku-Kluk, or Indiana Vigilants.
THE PANIC.
has, apparently taken up permanent
(juarters with us. Hard times get hard, r
every dayt and no prospect of a speedy
'let up." One d;iy last week the En
quirer published iu its "Male Help
Wanted" coluLin three hundred and
fifty six applications for work of any
kind. This was undoubtedly an extra
day; but while fifty "wauts" a few
weeks ago would have been considered a
largo number, the papers, now, seldom
have ewer than from two to three hun
dred. The Italian Opera Troude has
ordered its engagement here aud iu
Chicago to be cancelled; the agent says
no one will will buy reset ved seats, and
very fiw will take any kind at all. In
a musical place as this is, such a determ
ination is an ominous evidence of the
hardest times. The resumption ordered
by See. Richardson has worked no great
wonders here; indeed folks would not
growl at being subjected to even a green
back resumption.
