Uenrt A. Parsons, Jr. . . Editor THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1873. TEE ISSUE OF THE HOUB. It is certainly Dot pleasant to perceive continuance of the gloom that ha Tor six weeks past overspread the oountrjj but to deny that it still exists, would be useless. There is uneasiness yet be gotten of uneasiness,' rather than of any abstantial cause, and therefore not liable to arbitrary treatment. Look as long as ire may and as eagerly, -we can Bad only one reason lor it; fond that wttnt of confidence. Ther U no difficulty in tracing the results of the panio from its inception in the middle of September, up to' the present. First, a few lending specula tive banking concerns fell through; and the people wondered. Nextr houses connected more or less intimately with the speculators caved in, and then the publio were alarmed, thought their money no longer sate in banks, and histfthertl to draw It out. Here the chief evil began. There was no neces sity tor pursuing such a course. In every city a majortiy of the banks' were known for their utmost reliability; it was well understood that they had been con servative in their management and were involved in no rfomplitalions that could Bring danger to themselves or their de positors. These should have beeu trusted. Only a very small number of banks suffered suspension, and such be longed chiefly to New Yorkr and were so plainly marked by their policy that there need have beeu no special difficulty in picking them out. But, instead of dis criminating, depositors drew upon almost all institutions alike, and so embarrassed all. Fresh suspensions inevitably eu- sued, and this increased the alarm Thus the panio fed upon itself, and has been kept up ever day since by fear. Embarrassment of business men fol lows as the natural sequence of the em barrassment of the basks. Previously, our manufacturers and merchants of un doubted commercial standing had no dif ficulty in obtaining money to conduct their several lines cf industry, upon ten dering good security ; but when the banks had to refund to depositors, there was, of Course but little ruarghi left for discounting. Even those institutions which had not yet experienced a heavy "run" felt nervious, not knowing what day it might eome, and therefore were deterred from accepting paper that would, a few weeks before, have been taken with alacrity. So we find oui DUBlOeSS men HCnfe n ninnoy, tboir workshops reducing the number of hands employed, or the waesj or event ually closing. Then we travel another step, and find the workingman idle himself and family in want, This has literally been the course of events, and the picture we paint is uot local or re stricted in its application, but unfoiturj- ately national. Now, if such be a proper analysis of tho troubles that beset us (aud we think no one will dispute it) what is the plain duty ol tho people at this hour? Is it to nourish the distrust that has already brought about such demoralization ? Is it to talk twaddle about issuing more pa per money, when, for every dollar so is sued, values will be proportionately in flated and new complications ensue that may be Jar more serious than those now ou hand ? Is it to aim at pn mating po litical reputation by attempting the great cirous act of resuming specie payments with $250,000 in silver, when the obli gati6ns to be redeemed exrteo f 700,000, 000 ? All these issues are foreign to the question. We are of opinion the one thing that we want is conGdence. Let men trust one another and trust bai.ks with good directors, as they did before the speculators' failure aud inside of fortyeight hours there would be a per ceptible relief. There is more currency in the country now than there was before the 18th of September. Deposit it with bound institutions who does not know of one or more? and it will soon find its way back to start the heels ol in dustry anew. Ve still hope (hat the people will have the common seuse to pursue this course. Never was the pro priety of any course clearer, or its tffi fcacy more manifest. It is suicidal to bug suspicion that really never had a leg to stand upon, beyond what too easily ex cited imagination - loaned. Jay Cooke and IleBry Clews and a few other brok ers were not ready to meet their debts. That was the sum of the case at the out start. Must the whole country be pros trated for their failure? Verily, a lame conclusion, and one that from pemiees, could never be reached save through the avenue of alarm traversing which, men become blinder the further they go. Pittsburgh DUpateh. Prospectus for 1874 Seventh Your. THE ALDINE, An Illustrated Monthly Journal, univer sally admitted to be tht HanJaomost Periodical in the world. A Representa tive and Champion of Amerieati Taste. Not for Sale in Book or News Stores. THE ALDINE. while Issued with all the regularity, has none of the temporary or timely interest characteristic of ordinary periodicals. It is nn elegant miscellany of pure, light and graceful literature; and a collection of pictures the rarest upeeimen or ftrtistio skill, in blnlt and while. Al though each succeeding number affords a fresh pleasure to its friends, the real value and beauty of THE ALDINE will be most appreciated after it has been bound up at the close of the year. While other publi cation may claim supeiinr cheapness, as oomparod with rivals of a similar class, Tilt ALDINE is a unipue and original con ccption alone and unapproached abso lutely without competition in prico or character. The possessor of a complete volume cannot duplicate the quantity of fine paper and engravings in any other shape or number of volumes for ten times the cost: and theu, there a.'e the chromos, besides! - ART DEPARTMENT, 1874. The illustrations of THE ALDINE have won a world-wide reputation, and in the art centres ot Europe it is au admitted fact that its wood cuts are examples of the highest perfection ever attained. The com mon prejudice in favor of "steel plat cs," is rapidly yielding to a more educated and discriminating taste which recognizes the advantages of superior artistic quality with great facility of production. The wood cuts of THE ALDINE possess all the deli cacy and elaborate finish of the most costly steel plate, while they afford a better ren dering of the artist's original. To fully realize the wonderful work which THE ALDINE is doing for the cause of art culture in America, it is only necessary to consider the cost to the people of any other decent representations of the prflduotions of great painters. In addition to designs by the members of the National Academy, and other noted American artists, THE ALDINE will re pro-luce examples of the best foreign mas ters, selected with a view to the highest artistic success- and greatest general in terest. Thus the subscribers to THE ADDINE will, at a trifling cost, enjoy in his own home the pleasures and ictining influences of true art. The quarterly tinted plates for 1874 will be by Thus. Moran and J. D. Woodward. Tho Christmas issue for 1871 will con tain special designs appropriate to the season, by our best artists, and will -surpass in attractions any of its predecessors. PREMIUM FOR 1874. Ercry subscriber to THE ALDINE for the year 1874 will receive a pair ol chromos. The original pictures wore puiuled in oil for the publishers of THE ALDINE. by Thomas Moran, whose great Colorado picture was purchased by Congress lor ten thousand dollars. The subjects were chosen to represent "The East" and "The West." One is a view in The While Moun tains, New Hampshire; the other gives The Cliffs of Green River Wyoming 'ierritory. The difference in the nature ot the scenes themselves is a pleasing co. Ua.-t, uud affords a good display of the artist's scope nud coloring. The chromos are each worked from thirty dktintt plates and are in size (9-k16) aud uppeuiauue exact lac-similes of the originals. The presentation of a worthy example of America's greatest laniscapo paiuter to the subscribers of THE ALDINE was a bold but peculiarly happy idea, and its successful realization is attested by the following testimonial over the signature of Mr. Moran himself Kewabk, N. J., Sept. 20th, 1873. Messrs. James SrnoJi & Co. Ueutlemcu I om delighted with the proofs in color of your chromos. They arc wonderfully successful representations by mechanical process of the original puiui iugs. Very respect fully. (Signed,) THUS. MORAN. These chromos arc in every sense American. They nre by uu original A jiuri cau procc?s, with material of American niunulacture, from designs of American scenery by nn American painter, and pre seuted to subscribers to the first sucjc.-siui American Art Journal. If no better b cause of all this, they will certainly possess nn interest no forcigu production can in spire, and neither aie tney any the worse it by reason of peculiar facilities of pro duction they cost the publishers only a tritie, while equal in every respect to other chromos that are sold singly for double t tie subscription price of Tilt ALDINE. Per sons of taste will prize these pictures fur hemselves not for the price they did oi did not cost, and will appreciate the enter prise that renders their distribution possi ble. If any mbscribcr should indicate a preference for a figure subject, the pub lishers will send "Thoughts of Home," a new and beautiful chrouio, 1 4x20 inches, representing a little liaiiun exile whose sparkling eyes betray the longing of his heart.
