Henry A. Parsons, Jr. Editor THURSDAY, MAY 8, 1873. LEim raoM Florida. JACKSONVILLE, FLA., ) April 24th '73 Dear Advocate. Since our last writing changes bare been going on, otid while our pretty little oity stands about in the same plaoe it did, there are not quite so many people standing and moving in it as (there were. Health and pleasure seekers from more northern latitudes have been leaving in companies of iroma75 to 100 daily, both by rail and steamer for two weeks past, making it lively for Rail Itoad and Steamboat men and furnishing quite a harvest in that one thing so very neadful to all sorts and conditions of men to wit "Stamps." Some have left a little to early, as wiutcr 'lingering in the lap of Spring," has touched them about the ears and noses, and caused their whole bodies to shiver beneath the Frost King's parting tread. This morning we had a" letter from an M. D. of your "Quaker City," which informed us that since his arrival at the city of "Brotherly Love"' on the 15th inst., he had experienced two snow storms, and wished himself back again in the "Land of Flowere." Only two davs ago one the most terriffio snow storms of the season passed over portions of the North West, and so cold that farmers in some parts of Nebraska froze tr death within two rods of their dwell ings while trying to take care of their stock, while here on the 22nd the ther mometer stood between 80 and 90 Farmers all over the State are busy with their spring crops, and the pros pects are of the most flattering character of an abundant harvest ; the corn and eottou crops stand well for the season Garden vegetables, cabbages, green peas, new potatoes, onions, radishes, &c, all of this year's production, are now quite abundant. While many people have been leaving here for their homes in the North, there are quite a number coming in. A week ago this morning there wej-e sixty fresh arrivals from the North by Rail and Steamer ; many of those now coming to Florida, come with a view to locate here and build up a home for themselves and families. Florida has a future before it of no mean character, and at no distant day the large tracts of land now unoccu pied and uncultivated, will by occupied employing and supporting a largo eotei- an A inrttietrmna rinnuWinn Lands nre uow cheap, but land like every thing else in the markets of the world, are high or low occasioned to supply and demand, and we might add the use for which it is intended. Not many years since, indeed within the lifetime of men not very old, there were thousands of acres of land, within your grand old "Keystone State" that were not considered worth taxes by the owners that are now recovered ainoug most valuable lands of the State. Time has developed their value, so time will develope the value of our Florida Lands, and within tho next decade, lands that could this day be bought for 25 ccuts npr acre will bo worth 815 to 820 per i acre. The lands of Florida, like the lands of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, in. deed of all the States, must be devoted to the purposes for which nature seems to have adapted them to make them remunerative and valuable. The soil of some portions of the State will produce fair wheat, but gcnarally speak ing the soil of the State is not a wheat producing soil. Sugar cane, tfweet po tatoes, cotton and the tropical fruits are natural to the soil and can be grown with profit. As lato as 1868 it was thought that Irish potatoes could not be raked in Florida, now it is demonstrated that they can be grown profitably, and are now grown in large quanitics, and regarded as one of tho staples of the State. Thus each passing year de velopes some hitherto unknown property and adaptation of our Soil. But more anon Yours Truly Q in tho Cornor. Once Round or Twice Round. A Beigian physician asserts that he has ascertained that oough, sore throat and bronchitis increase in an inverse ratio to the width of the neck-tie. In 1832 the cravat went twice ronnd the neck; bronchitis was a rare disease at that time. In1840 the cravat began to be tied only onco round, coughs and sore throats increased. In 1850 the cravat was so narrowed that there was scarcely anything of it but the knot in front; the ohanga produced a corresponding increase of the maladies in question. In 1870 the cravat does not even eo quite round the neolc, and brouchitis beoopes more prevalent. In 1873 the neck-tie is reduced to a mere bit of silk hooked on to the collar-button of the shirt; and deaths from chest complaint form a twentieth of the returns of mor Still Anohier Firk The oil town of St. Petersburgh, Clarion, Co., seems to have become caught in the meshes of the fire fiend. It was only few days ago that the plaoe was nearly destroyed, and now comes tho report of another (a third) disaster. On WeJnesday morning of last week fire originated in St. James House owned by MoWilliam, on Main street, which, spteading each way, consumed large amount of property. McWil- lan alleges that, as he was removing a kerosone Lamp from the table, it un accountably exploded and set fire to the carpet and furniture. When some parties arrived at the scene of the disas ter they reported finding tho host of the St. James lying upon the sidewalk, suf fering evidently from the effects of a soda fountain, which, as they believed, had been supplied with a whiskey jet. The parties suffering by the fire are Clark & Simons, grocers, loss 81,000, in sured ; Chas. Curley, loss 800, no in surance: Barney Lep, loss 81,200, no insurance ; M. M. Booth, loss 8200 no insurance) C. Reinhart, loss 8200, no inusrance. The handsome residences of Messrs. Blakeslee, on the opposite side of Main street, were badly burned, but the efficient services of the Sre depart ment, and the utility of the water works saved the lower end of the town from demolition. Lous about 825,000, with insurance of only about 82,000. Erie Gazette 1st inst. Prof. Fowler's Greatest Work The National Publishing Company, of Philadelphia, have issued a very import ant and valuable work, by Prof. O. S. Fowler, on Manhood, Womanhood and their Mutual Interrelations ; Love, its Laws, Power, eto. It is a mastely ex. position of the laws which control the relations, of the sexes, and their duties toward each other, and it i not assert ing too much to pronounce it the most valuable and timely publication of the age. "Know thyself 1" was the profound injunction of the nnoient sage, and it u the neclect to comply with with this pre cept which causes nearly all the misery and sickness of the world.. It is aston ishing to find how utterly ignorant men and women, otherwise accomplished and intelligent, are concerning themselves. Husbands and wives constantly feel the need of more light on tho subject of their relations to each other, especially concerning the great duty for which muniage was instituted the begetting and rearing of a family It is for the purpose of diffusing tins knowledge that Prof. Fowler has given IU lllC nu.lvl lido nuik uu "Ovutuul Ct enec," which is simply an explanation of the luws which govern the sexes in their relations to each other. He points out the duties of husbands and wives and discloses facts of which no true man or woman ought to be ignorant. He lets us into the secret of preserving female health and beauty far into old age, and shows how mothers can avoid much of the suffering of bringing children into the world a subject in which every woman is interested, and low "female complaints" may be avoided with ca.se and certainty. The book is a real blcsssing to the public, and will be regarded as such by hll who read it. The low pr icy at which it is issued brings it within the reach of all, and every person whe wants to anivo at a proper understand ing of the true relations ot the sexes, should procure a copy. It is sold by subscription ouly, aud agents tire wantcJ in every county. Attempted Rohblry. Early Fri day morning an attempt was made to rob Mr. A iiioa Heath of about thirteen hun dred dollars he had in his posession at Spring Creek. It appears that Mr. Heath had been settling up an Estate there, and received about the above amount of money. He generally, when in that section stays at a house opposite the one he stayed at last night, but by invitation and request of his neice, Mrs. Langley, he staid there that night. He slept in a room adjoining one where his neice and another lady were; and to wards morning, before daylight, he hap pened to wake and turn in the bed, when he saw a man start from his door, and heard bitn jump from the top of the stairs down. On getting up it was found that the theit or theives had broken tho window blinds with the apparent purpose of raising a window, but being unable to do so, they had cut through a panel of the door, withdrawu the bolt and thus got in. Mr. Heath's overcoat was down staffs, and had been rifled of all the pa pers; but the money which was in his pants pocket was luckily saved by Mr. Heath accidcntlly awakening, as the pauts were almost within reaoh of the tb'cf when discovered. It appears that the thief must have been well accquainted with the locality, and where Mr. Heath was to sleep, for no other doors had been opened in the night.
