Democratic Organs.
The Democratic Journals still keep
tlieir old gnme of lying and vitupera
tion at work, just as though the people
of this state at the ttato election by a
majority oi 40,000, and at the presiden
tial election 130,000 wajsority, had not
get to their seal as a lying ministry, in
language to plain to be mistaken. "We
know you gentlemen to be liars, and slan
ders, we take no stock in otir only stock
iu trade to wit: Unmitigated falsehood.''
One says of the. President that he is
weary of Long Branch, and American
things generally, that he is going to
Europe next summer because his son and
daughter met with a hearty reception
there this last season. Now nobody but
Demociatio organs knows anything about
the President going to Europe next sum
mer, not even the President himself, and
all there is about it is Democratic gues
sing, and the Democratic guess is always
a lie.
Another says of Gen. Allen, our
worthy State Auditor General that he
was a shister in the army duiiua the war,
and all we have to say to tho cowdardly
slander is that it is a lie made out of
whole cloth, not a word of truth in it,
as every soldier, and honorable, and truth
loving civilian knows, such a lie is hard
ly worth a passing notice, yetwe waste pa
per and ink enough to simply designate
it by its true character and that is a
wholesale falsehood. Every sensible
Democrat, and every intelligent Demo
cratic organ knows that the Democratic
party is dead. Then why this fuss and
bluster over the carcass of what was once
a live controlling element in Americau
politics? Slavery was at one time tbe
life and soul of the Democratic party,
when that went under every thing upon
which the party relied for power disap.
peared. The orators and oracles of the
party could no longer wax eloquent about
this peculiar institution as the gift of the
fathers of the Republic' to the people.
They laid much stress on the word "pc
culiar," it, using it, in regard to slaveiy,
as if it mcnt more when so used, and as
though it relieved the institution of one
whit of its barbaric meanness, Weil
slavery being dead, the skeleton carcass
of the Dcuiocmuy, uuw uud then utters
a groan ovor what it once was, to wit, a
great, a very great political party, and
would likejo make believe that it is yet,
But when did Gen. Grant tell a Demo
crat editor or orator that ho was going to
Europe? That American scenery had
lost its charms? Or that he earnestly
desired to be lionised by Europeans?
These gentlemen don't know, for the
best reeson in the world. Gen. Graut
1 as never intimated any such thing, not
even to his most intimate friends. Upon
the whole it is somewhat amazing to
see and hear these Democratic whiffi'
caperand bark and snarl while the great
Republican party moves on, not even
pausing to say yet out.

Ended at Last. On Saturday even
ing at a few minutes after eleven o'clock
tho Jury in the celebrated Stokes case
came into court having agreed upon their
verdict, of "murder in the first degree."
The Judgment of the Court, which is
tho death penalty was pronounced on
Monday, the Cth iust. Thus it happens
that in just one year from the day that
Fisk was murdered, his murderer is sen
tenced to be executed by hanging. It
seems there was 6ome sensation in the
court room which was densly packed
when the jury returned with their ver
dict, and Stokes demonstrated the viol,
ence of his nature in menacing Mr.
Beach one of the Atty's for the people;
simply because he done his duty well to
society, and in faithfully vindicating the
laws. Stokes is to be banged Feb. 28,
1873.

A I.I. who travel are "inuehly" inter
ested in the lodging place or places thoy
are destined to occupy. A good table,
a comfortable room, an inviting bed on
which to lay the weary body are matters
that claim a good deal of attention when
one is out from home. Well the propri
etor of the Hyde House in our village
seems to have anticipated all these things
in the first class bouse he keeps. The
hungry, thirsty, foot sore and weary trav
eller can here find things to his liking.
R. K. E.nbody keeps an excellent
eating saloon in the basement of the
Service & Wheeler Block, No., 42 Main
Br., Ridgwaj. ne has on hand at all
trmes a large supply of ehoice cigars,
tbe very best oysters, tripe pickled tongue
in a word all the et cetera of a first class
eating house. Those desiriug to do so,
can spend an hour plasantly at Billiards
or pool.
Br do means put yourself in another's
power; if you put your thumb between
f wo grinders they are very opt to bite.
On Christmas uvuijiu fim n:ru,'i ,
of the Society and Friends ot Rev. J.
W. Davis and family, met at the Wilcox
House in Wilcox for Sociable. The
ladies provided a most, excellent supper
for all present, and cheer and good will
to all was the scntiuirnt of tho honsc.
After a most pleasant evening, spent in
exchange ot friendly words and thoughts,
and in vainly attempting to strip the ta
blcs of their siiper-abtindnnt loads of
good things, the crowd dispersed, leav
ing $173,00 in money which was pre
sented to Rev. J. W. Davis, with a lurge
amount of cake which the ladies of Wil
cox know so well how to make. For
which ho desires to return his thanks
and the thanks of his family, hoping
that he may be as earnest in striving to
present to them the bread of life as they
were earnest in providing for the teni
porial wants of himself and family.
Drugs. When one is well and hear
ty, there is no person or persons in the
community so little thought of as the
Doctor, and the Apothecary. What
care wo about Doctors nud Druggists,
whew! We are all rijiht, never going to
bo sick. Hell the tables turn, if not
entirely over, they tip aoiuziugly, (to us
at least) wo ore rcaily uot well, just
about sick, aud tho Doctor is ubout as
good looking man as wc know of in the
community, and the Druggist is a mighty
fine fellow. Are you just about, eick?
H'ell call in the Doctor of your choice,
get his prescription, aud go right off to
G. G. Messenger's Drug store and have
it filled with a pure article. Grove keeps

Fire at St. Mary's. On Sunday
eveuing 5th inst- about half past niue
o'clock the residenco of Mr. Berkley,
on Rose St., took fire and was soo n a
smouldering ruius. Tho worst feature
of the fire, and iudcod a most lamenta
ble occurance was the burning to death
of three children, one five years, one
three years and one uioe mouths old.
The children were eft aluue in the house
and the house locked; the mother from
home in a ttute ot intoxication. The
family were in indigent circumstances,
and not only so, but the parents were
considered unfit to have the custody of
tlieir children. Of this latter fact we
are informed the overseers of the poor
had due notice, but for some reason best
known to themselves did uot act is duty
and humanity dictated. On Mouday
the iuhuman besotted mother left the
village.
The Weather. The weather dur
ing tbe past month or two has been pas
sing strange. More snow has fallen at
this season of the year throughout the
country than for at least five and it may
bo ten years previous. The delay to
travel by rail has been very great uud
the cost to the different railway compa
nies in their efforts to keep up the ''Irou
Monster" has been immense indeed.
The howlingsot "Old Boreas" have sent
thrill to, the hearts of all, and caused
those who by force of circumitancos wtrc
compelled to face the fury of the "Win
ter King," to don overcoat, muffler and
gloves before exposing thenisebes to its
stern blasts. But then comes the in
quiry. "What if they do not possess
these articles iodespeusible to comfort?"
Wc answer at once. "Go to Horton At
Miller's, Masonic Hall building, where
you will find a full line of Clothing,
gloves, scarfs and other articles of wear
ing apparel, the possession of which will
make you comfortable and happy. And
the strangest thing of all is, they arc
cheap.
In these days ot hard times men are
looking about to see where they save tbe
most money in purchasing those articles
necessary to carry ou their business with
profit to themselves. This is so with
lumbermen who 'use a great many edged
tools aud chains. Well it has been dem
onstrated to a certaiuty that W. S Ser
vice & Co., 12 Maiu St., is the place to
buy every thing in the hard aud tiuware
line from a tin whistle to a first-class
cook, and parlor stove. Dou't forget tho
place, No. 42 Main st.
Persons wishing to avail themselves
of the very best fresh beef, pork, saus
age, tud corned beef should call without
delay at the meat market of Messrs
Brewer & Cook, where they can find the
articles named at live and let live prices.
Don't forget tho place, Brewer & Cook,
in tho basement, first door west of the
Poft Office.

Hair Vigor,
For restoring to Gray Hair its
natural Vitality and Color.
A dressing.
which is at
once agreeable,
healthy, and
. nr ...! r
I '!S V preserving the
V A 5 hair. It soon
ill 5' restores faded
or gray hair
to its original
color, with th
gloss and freshness of youth. Thin
hair is thickened, falling hair checked,
and baldness often, though not always,
cured by its use. Nothing can restore
the hair where the follicles are de
stroyed, or the glands atrophied and
decayed; but such as remain can be
saved by this application, and stimu
lated into activity, so that a new
growth of hair is produced. Instead
of fouling the hair with a pasty sedi
ment, it will keep it clean and vigorous.
Its occasional use will prevent the hair
from turning gray or falling off, and
consequently prevent baldness. The
restoration of vitality it gives to the
scalp arrests and prevents tho forma
tion of dandruff, which is often so un
cleanly and offensive. Free from those
deleterious substances which make
some preparations dangerous and inju
rious to the hair, the Vigor can only
benefit but not harm it. If wanted
merely for a HAIR DRESSING,
nothing else can be found so desirable.
Containing neither oil nor dye, it does
not soil white cambric, and yet lasts
long on the hair, civine it a rich, glossy
lustre, and a grateful perfume.

Cherry Pectoral,
Tot Diseases of the Throat and Lungs,
uoh M Coughs, Colds, Whooping
Cough, Bronchitis, Asthma,
and Consumption.
Among the great
discoveries of modern
science, few art of
more real value to
mankind than this ef
fectual remedy for all
diseases of the Throat
and Lungs. A vast
trial of its virtues,
throughout this ana
other countries, has
shown that it does
surely and effectually
control them. The testimony of our best citi-
tsns, of all classes, establishes the fact, that
Chbbrt Pectoral will and does rolicve and
cure the afflicting disorders of the Throat and
Lungs beyond any other medicine. The most
dangerous affections of the Pulmonary Organs
yield to its power; and cases of Consump
tion, cared by wis preparation, are pumic
)v known, so remarkal
is as nardiv to ne De-
heved, were they not proven beyond dispute.
As a remedy it is adequate, on which the public
may rely for full protection. By curing Coughs,
the forerunners of more serious disease, it saves
unnumbered lives, and an amount of suffering
not to be computed. It challenges trial, and con
vinces the most sceptical. Every family should
keep it on hand as a protection against the early
and unporceived attack of Pulmonary Affections,
which are easily met at first, but which become
incurable, and too often fatal, if neglected. Ten
der lungs need this defence; and it is unwise to
be without it. As a safeguard to children, amid
the distressing diseases which beset the Throat
and Chest of childhood, Cherkt Pectoral
it invaluable; for, by iu timely use, multi
tudes are rescued from premature graves, and
saved to the love and affection centred on them.
It acts speedily and surelv against ordinary colds,
securing sound and health-restoring sleep. No
one will suffer troublenome Influenza and pain
ful Bronchitis, when they know how eusily
they can be cured.
Originally the product of long, laborious, and
successful chemical investigation, no cost or toil
is spared in making every bottle in the utmost
possible perfection. It may be confidently re
lied upon as possessing all the virtues it has ever
exhibited, and capable of producing cures as
memorable as the greatest it has ever effected.
