paragraph:
"A oetitleman who has just returned
from a deer hunt on the frontier brings
news of an epidemic prevailing among
these animals which threatens to serious
ly affect the supply of venison, lie says
that herds were frequently seen in .which
there would be dozens scarcely able to
travel."
Later in the day we met two hunters
of this city, both gentlemen of veracity
who had just returned from a gunning
excursion into Cumberland County, a
few miles south of Bridgeport. They
found, in passing through a clover field,
two dead rabbits, and about half a mile
further on another rabbit, all having
died from some singular disease. There
was a green offensive matter oczing out
of the nose, aod the animals seemed to
bo mere bkeletons. Who can explain

NE MILLION OF LIVES SAVED.
Is one of the most remarkable facta o
this remarkable age, not that bo many
persons are tho viotimf of dyspepsia or in
digestion, but. Its willing victims. Now,
we would not be understood to say that any
one regards dyspepsia with favor, or feels
disposed to rank it. among the luxuries of
life, , Far from it. Those who have ex
perienced its torments would scout such an
idea. All dread it, and would gladly dis
pense with its unpleasant familiarities.
Mark Tspley, who was jolly under all the
trying circumstances in which he was
placed, never had an attack of dyspepsia,
or his jolily would have speedily forsaken
him.
Of all the multifarious diseases to which
the human system is liable,
there ' is icrhnps no one so
generally prevalent as dyspepsia. There
are disc ;ses more acute and painful, and
which moie frequently prove fatal, but
none tho erl'eets of which are so depressing
to ti e mind nnd so positively distressing to
the body. If there is a wretched being in
tho world it is
A CONFIRMED DYSPEPTIC.
We have said that dyspepsia is perhaps
the most universal of human diseases.
This is iniphatically the case in the United
Slates. Whether this general prevalence
is due to the character of the food, the
method of Its preparation, or the hasty
manner in whioh it is usually swallowed,
is not our province to explain. The great
fact with- which we are called to deal s
this:
DYSPEPSIA ritEVAILS
almost uuivei sally.
Nearly every other person you tnecti
victim, an apparently willing one: were
this not the case, why so many sufferers,
when a certain, speedy and safe remedy is
within the easy reach of all who will
avail themselves of it? But says ft dys
peptio: What is this remedy? to whioh we
reply: This great allevator of human
suffering is almost as widely known as the
English language. It has allayed tho
agonies of thousands, and is to-day carry
comfort and encouragement, to thousands
of others. This acknowledged panaceais
noi.e other than
Br. HOOFLAND'S GERMAN BITTERS.
Would you know more of the merits of
this wonderful preparation than can be
learned from the experience of others?
Try it yourself, and when it has failed to
fulfil the assurance of its efficacy given by
the proprietor, then abandon faith in it.
LET IT BE REMEMBERED,
first of all, that HOOFLAND'S GERMAN
BITTEHS is - j 1 rum beverage.
The j nee composed wholly of the pure
juice or vital principle of roots. This is
not a mere nssertion. The extracts from
whicli they arc compounded are prepared by
on e of the iihlest of German chemists. Their
effects can be beneficial only in all cases of
the hilliary system. Hoofland's German
Bitters stand without an equal, acting
piomptly and vigorously upon tho liver;
they remove iis torpidity and cause health
ful secretion of bile thereby supplying
I ho stomach with (lie most indispensable
elements v. f sound digestion in proper pro
portioas. They purify the blood, cleansing tho
vital Huid .' nil hurtful impurities and su
plnnting them with the elements of genuine
iiealihfulncss.
Now, there aro certain classes ot per
sons to whom extreme Bitters are not only
unpalatable, hut who find it impossible to
take them without, positive discomfort. For
such U-r. HOOFLAND'S GERMAN TONIC
has been specially prepared. It is intended
for use where a slight alcoholio stimulant
is require! in connection with the well
known Touie properties of the pure Ger
man Bitters.
.HOOFLAND'S TONIC
nets with almost, marvelous effect. It not
only stimulates tho flagging and wasting
energies, but invigorates and permanently
strengthens its action upon the Liver
and iStomach thorough, perhaps less
prompt than the Bitters, when tne same
luaiiiiiT i taken is none the less certain,
tndi.-iestiun, Billiousness, Physical or Ner
vous pros! ration, vicld readily to its po
tent iuthieneo. It gives thn invalid a new
and stronger hold upon life, removes de
pression of spiiit. and inspires cheerful
ness. But Dr. Hoofland's benefactions to
the human race are not confined to his
celebrated GERMAN BITTERS, or his
invaluable Tome. He has prepared an
other medicine, which is rapidly winning
its way to popular favor because of its in-irini-io
nietits. This is HOOFLAND'S
I'ODOI'HYLLIN PILLS, a perfect eubsti
tute for mercury without any of mercury's
evil qualities. .
These wonderful Pills, which arc Intend
ed to net upon th Liver, arc mainly com.
posed of IV-dopiiyllin, or tho vital princi
ple of the mandrake root. It is tho medi
cinal virtues of this health-ijiving plant, in
a perfectly pure and highly concentrated
form. The Podophyliin acts directly on
the Liver, stimulating its functions and
causing it to mi.ke its billiary secretions in
regular and proper quantities. The inju
rious results which invariably follow ahe
use of mercury is entirely avoided by
their use. Bui it is not upon the Liver
only that their powers are exerted. The
extract of Mandrake contained in them is
skillfully combined with four other ex
tracts, one of which acts upon the stomach,
one upon the upper bowels, one upon the
lower bowels, and prevents any griping
effect, thus pro hieing a pill that influences
the entire digestive and alimentary syste n,
in an equal and harmonious manner, and
iis action entirely tree from nausea, vomit
ing or griping pains common to all other
purgatives.
Possessing Miese much desirable qualities
the Podophyliin becomes invaluable as a
FAMILY MEDICINE.
No. household should be without them.
They are perfeotly safe, require but two

cient in action, and when usea in oonneo
tion with Dr. Hoofland's German Bitters,
or Tonio, may bo regarded as certain spe
cifics ia all oases of Liver Complaint, Dys
pepsia, or any of the disorders to whiob
the system is ordidarly subject. Tho

act upon the stomach and bowels, carrying
off improper obstructions, while the Bitters
or Tonio purify the blood, strengthen and
invigorate the frime, give tone and appe
