Tho idea that one man can carry the
vote of a State in his breeches pocket,
was probably entertained until a late
hour on Tuesday evening by ex-Governor
Cuntin, of Pennsylvania. The Gree
lcyites bad-flattered him into this belief
the Tribune had overwhelmed him
with abject fawnings, and Mr. Curtin
undoubtedly thought that he wan the
head nf the Jru.blienn party..
Once more the lesson has been taught
which politicians are bo slow to learn
that politicians and nowspapere are
only powerful so loDg as they truly,
faithfully, and candidly reproscnt puh
lio opinion. When a man has perform
ed this duty for some time, he occasion,
ally is deluded it to the idea that he is
the public that all the world will
follow him.
The latest victim to this delusion is
Andrew G- Curtin, who owed ht posi
tion entirely to the Republican party,
and took the first opportunity which pre
sented itself of dealing a treacherous
slab at that party and its chiefs. Wo

him lor his betrayal of his prinoipesl

The various Indian delegations now
here visited the Executive Mansion to
day. The Prcsideut, through an inter
preter, informed them that the effort ot
the government Wi.s to udvuuoo them in
civilization and preserve their lives by

.The white people are uow so numerous
aud increasing so rapidly as to crowd
the Indians, mil therefore it was neces

children. The I'resideut remarked that
he had nothing mofc tc say except
through the Secetary of the Interior.
The Indians listened attentively, but
no invitation wasgjven them to respond.
The I resident and .Secretaries, four of
whom were present, retired to attend a
cabinet meeting, which was aliened by
all except Secretary Robeson and Attor

year has again brought tho time when it
is usual to look back upon the past aud
publicily thank Almighty God for His
mercies and His blessings, and
Whereas, If any one people have
more occasion toan another for such
thankfulness it is the citizens ot the
United States, whose government is
their creature, subject to their behests,
who have reserved to themselves ample
civil and religious freedom aud erjuality
before the law; who, during the last
twelve months have enjoyed exemption
from any previous or general calamity,
aud tc whom in agriculture, manufac
tures and commerce has been vouchsafe
ed.
Tterefore by these sonsiderations I
recommend that on Thursday, the twenty-eighth
