"Traveling hy : Northward to Niagara, is the e lending article in Seribner's for begins a description of the route taineton to Niagara over the still 1 Baltimoro and t'otomao Railroad well-known Northorn Central. A interesting region was traversed by Wi. James Richardson, the author of the paptr, and the artists of Scribner'a (includ ing the line of the Pennsylvania Central from Philadelphia to Harrisburg), and a part of the results of the trip are before us in one of the most brilliantly illustrated and entertaining magazine articles of the day. Some of ibe cuts are wonderfu. both in drawing and engraving; and their effect ia heightened by good .paper and good printing. Following this is a bright little illustrated story by Mrs. walker, "f anny Winthrop's Treat " Mr. John H. The new novelette, entitled "Dra.xy Miller's Dowry," by Saxo Holm, author of Esthor Wynn's Love Letters," is begun in this number, and gives promise of extraordi nary interest. Mrs. Olipbant's "At His Gates" is continued and proves to be a really master story; it certainly deserves wider attention. Noah Brooks, author of "The C'ru-se of the Halboa," comes out with a beautiful and pathetic story, "The Waif of Nautilns Island." Warner'a "Eack-Log Studies" are as juicy and de. licious as ever, with a little more serious thought this time, His picture of the singing reformers is a delightful bit of Warnerism. For solid articles we have a suggestive paper on "Our Educational Outlook," in which compulsory eduoation is advocated, and a paper on Mr. Lowell's Prose, in which Mr. Wilkinson is as cour teous as he is outting. In a little atrticle on "Frederic Mistral, the Provencal Poet,"we find a translation of the song Magali, by Bev. Cbarle. T. Brooks, which is one of the most charming pieces of versification we have ever met with. Saxe Holm's story - contains two remarkable poems: there is a ringing lyrio The Railway Ride," by Thomas Dunn English, in the railroad arti cle; and there are verses by Rev. Geo. Lansing Taylor, Sara H. Browne, and Amelia E. Daley. In "Topics of the Time," Dr. Holland discusses "The Con. ervative Resouroes of American Life," "Esthetics at a Premium," "Rum and Railroads." Jn "The Old Cabinet" are "New names," "Stories without Point," 'Concerning a Pestilent Evil," MacDon ald's "Within and Without," and "Tragic" This number begins a new volume, and among the improvements which should be noted are a new Department entitled "Na ture and Science," which opens well with a pregnant summary of praotioal soienoe; en Urgment of "Home and Society," and the consolidation of "Culture and Progress" Botes under one head. It is one of the most remarkable faots of this remarkable age, not that so many persons are the viotims of dyspepsia or In digestion, but its willing victims. Now, we would not be understood to say that any one regards dyspepsia with favor, or feels disposed to rank it among the luxuries of life. Far from it. Those who have ex perienced its torments would scout such an idea. All dread it, and would glsdlv dis. pense with its unpleasant familiarities. Mark Tapley, who was jolly under all the trying oircumetanoes in whioh he was placed, never had an attack of dyspepsia, or his jolity would have speedily forsaken him. Of all the multifarious diseases to which the human system is liable, there is perhaps no one so generally prevalent as dyspepsia. There are diseases more acute and painful, and which more frequently prove fatal, but none the effeets of which are so depressing to the mind and so positively distressing to the body. If there is a wretched being in the world it is A CONFIRMED DYSPEPTIC. We have Baid that dyspepsia is perhaps the most universal of human diseases. This is imphatioally the case in the United 8tates. Whether this general prevalence is due to the character of the food the method of its preparation, or the hasty manner in whioh it is usually swallowed, is not our province to explain. The great fot with which we are called to deal is this: DYSPEPSIA PREVAILS almost univei sally. Nearly every other person you meet is a victim, on apparently willing one; were this not the case, why so many sufferers, when a certain, speedy and Bofe remedy is within the easy reach of all who will avail themselves of it? But says a dys peptic: What is this remedy? to which we reply: This great alloyator of huraaD guttering is almost as widely known as the English language. It has allayeJ the agonies of thousands, and is to-day carry comfort and encouragement to thousands of others. This acknowledged panacea is noLB other than Dr. HOOFLAND'S GERMAN BITTERS Would you know more of the merits of this wonderful preparation than can be learned from the experience of others? Try it yourself, and when it has failed to fulfil the assurance of its efficacy given by the proprietor, then abandon faith in it. LET IT BE REMEMBERED, first of all. that HOOFLAND'S GERMAN BITTERS is arum beverage. They are composed wholly of the pure juice or vital principle of roots. This is not a mere assertion The extracts from which they are compounded are prepared by one of the ablest of German chemists. Their effects can be beneficial only in all case of the billiary tyslem. Hoofland's German Bitters stand without an equal, acting promptly aud vigorously upon the liver; they remove its torpidity an I cause health ful secretion of bile thereby supplying the stomach with the most indispensable elements of sound digestion iu proper pro portions. They purify the blood, cleansing the vital fluid of all hurtful impurities and su planting them with the elements of genuiue healthtulness. Now, there are certain classes ot per sons to whom extreme Hitters are not only unpalatable, but who find it impossible to take them without positive disoomfort. For such Dr. HOOFLAND'S GERMAN TONIC has been specially prepared. H is intended for use where a slight a'.coholio stimulant is requirel in connection with the well known Tonic properties of the pure Gor man Bittors. HOOFLAND'S TONIC acts with almost marvelous effeot. It not only stimulates the flagging and wasting energies, but invigorates and permanently strengthens 'its action upon the Ltvcr and Stomach thorough, perhaps less prompt than the Bilters, when tne same quantity is taken is none the less certain Indigestion, Billiousuess, Physical or Ner vous prostration, viold readily to its po tent influence. It gives the invalid a new and stronger hold upon life, removes de pression of spirit, and inspires cheerful ness. But Dr. Hoofland's benefactions to the human nice are not confined to his celebrated GERMAN BITTERS, or his invnluablo Tonic. He has prepared an other medicine, which is rapidly winning its way to popular favor because of its in trinsic metits. This U HOOFLAND'S PODOPHYLLIN PILLS, a perfect substi tute for mercury without any of mercury's evil qualities. These wonderful Pills, which are Intend ed to act upon the Liver, are mainly com posed of Podophyllum, or the vital princi ple of the mandrake root. It is the medi cinal virtues of this health-giving plant in a perfectly pure and highly concentrated form. The Podophyllin acts directly on the Liver, stimulating its funoti ,ns and causing it to make its billiary secretions in regular nud propo.- quant.ties. The inju rious results which invariably follow the use of mercury is entirely avoided by their use. But it is not. upon the Liver only that their powers are exerted. The extract of Mandrake contained in them is skillfully combined with four other ex tracts, one of which acts upon thi stomach one upon the upper bowels,- one upon the lower bowels, and prevents any griping effect, thus producing a pill that influences the entire digestive and alimen'ary system, in an equal and harmonious manner, and its action entirely :ree from nausea, vomit ing or griping pains common to all other purgatives. Possessing Oiese much desirable qualities the Podophyllin becomes invaluable as a FAMILY MEDICINE. No household should be without them. They are perfectly safe, require but two for an ordinary dose, are prompt and effi cient in aotion, and when used in connec tion with Dr. Hoofland s German Bitters, or Tonic, may be regarded as certain spe cifics in all eases of Liver Complaint, Dys pepsia, or any of the disorders to which the system is ordidarly subject. The PODOPHYLLIN PILLS act upon the stomach and bjwels, carrying off improper obstructions, while the Bitters or Tonio purify tbo blood, strengthen and invigorate the frime give tone and appe tite to the stomach, and thus build up the invalid anew. Dr. Hoofland, having provided internal remedies for disease, has given the world one mainly for external applioatijn, in the wonderful preparation known as Da. HOOFLAND'S GREEK OIL. This Oil is a sovereign remedy for pains and aches of all kinds. Rheumatism, Neuralgia, Toothache, ChilHains, Sprains, Burns, Pain in the Back and Loins, Ringworms, etc., etc., all yield to its external application. Taken internally, it is a oure for Heart burns, Kidney Diseasos, Sick Headaches, Colio, Dysentery, Cholera Morbus, Cramps, Pains in the Stomach, Colds, Asthma, etc These remedies will be sent by express to any looality, upon application to the PRINCIPAL OFFICE, at the GERMAN MEDICINE STORE, No. 631 ARCH ST., PHILADELPHIA CHAS. It hoe stood the test of years, with a con stantly growing rep ntation. based nn its intrinsic virtues, and sustained by its re markable cures. So mild as to be safe and beneficial to children, and yet so searching as to effectually purge out the great cor ruptions of the blood, such as the scrofulous and syphilitic contamination. Impurities, or diseases that have lurked in the system for years, soon yield to this powerful anti dote, and disappear. Hence its wonderful cures, many of which are publicly known, of Scrofula, and all scrofulous diseases, Ulcers, Eruptions, and eruptive dis orders of the skin, Tumors, Blotches, Boils, Pimples, Pustules, Sores, St. Anthony's Fire, Hose or Erysipe las, Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald Heart, Kingrworm, and internal Ul cerations of the Uterus, Stomach, and Liver. It also cures other com plaints, to winch it would not seem especi ally adapted, such as Dropsy, Dyspep sia, Fits, Neuralgia, Heart Disease, Female Weakness, Debility, and Leucorrhoea, when they are manifesta tions of the scrofulous poisons. It is an excellent restorer of health and strength in the Spring. By renewing the appetite and vigor of the digestive organs, it dissipates the depression and listless lan guor of the season. Even where no disorder appears, people feel better, and live longer, for cleansing the blood. The system moves on with renewed vijjor and a new lease of life. PREPARED B T Dr. J.
