The new novelette, entitled "Dra.xy Miller's
Dowry," by Saxo Holm, author of Esthor
Wynn's Love Letters," is begun in this
number, and gives promise of extraordi
nary interest. Mrs. Olipbant's "At His
Gates" is continued and proves to be a
really master story; it certainly deserves
wider attention. Noah Brooks, author of
"The C'ru-se of the Halboa," comes out
with a beautiful and pathetic story, "The
Waif of Nautilns Island." Warner'a
"Eack-Log Studies" are as juicy and de.
licious as ever, with a little more serious
thought this time, His picture of the
singing reformers is a delightful bit of
Warnerism. For solid articles we have a
suggestive paper on "Our Educational
Outlook," in which compulsory eduoation
is advocated, and a paper on Mr. Lowell's
Prose, in which Mr. Wilkinson is as cour
teous as he is outting. In a little atrticle on
"Frederic Mistral, the Provencal Poet,"we
find a translation of the song Magali, by
Bev. Cbarle. T. Brooks, which is one of the
most charming pieces of versification we
have ever met with. Saxe Holm's story
- contains two remarkable poems: there is a

Attempted Escape Alonzo naight,
who has henn an occupant of our jail for
some weeks, awaiting trial on charges of
theft and arson, made an unsuccessful
attempt to escape on Saturday night last.
He had succeeded in moviug one of the
large stones from the wall of his cell,
but it so bound in its place that it could
no, be forced out, and he had the satis
faction of continuing his present board

Last night another unsuccessful at
tempt was made by him to escape, but
like the first was unsuccessful. Elaight
is not a common character by any
means, and will require the vigilance ot
our officials to keep him in custody until
his triol at the ensuing terra of court.
