Affixing Postage Stamps. The
fact that many peoplo do not seem to
have learned that the proper place upon
a letter for a postage stamp is upon tho
upper right hand corner, has suggested
the idea to a Bostonian of giving printed j
directions ou the back of each stamp as
to how it should be used, by use of tho
words "stick this stamp upon the upper
right hand corner of your letter." He
proposes to bring the subject to the at
tention of the Postoffice Department, if
he receives favorable responses to his
letters addressed to Postmasters in first
class offices asking their opinions.

Kean County. Last Wednesday
morniug, 20th inst., the body of Mrs.
Patrick Burns and that of her child
were found under a barn near their resi
dence at Kane. As it was known that
Patrick Burns was in the habit of get
ting drunk, and when in that state, of
abusing his wife and child, even at
times compelling them to fly for their
lives to the neighbors, it was supposed
he had driven them out into the cold
and they bad taken refuge under the
barn, and had frozen to death. On
Thursday a post mortem examination
was mi.de of the oodies, when it was
discovered that Mis. Burns had died
fro.u Wrangulation, as prints of fingers
could h plainly seen on her throat.
A jury' was impaneled, which
after sitting three days rendered a ver
dict that deceased came to their death
by the bawls of Patrick Bums or some
person persons unknown. The ex-
. citement as intense and threats were
even madeof lynching Burns, and at
two diffierejt times a younger brother of
the murdeld woman attempted to shoot
him but wa prevented from doing 10.
Burns was iken into custody and sent
to SmethpoA where he was lodged in
jail to awal tfal t tho next term of
Court.

Overworked Brains. A genaral
error prevails on this subject. Nearly
all the cases of sickness or exhaustion
& . . , ,
iroin excessive- mental laoor that we
read of are really the effect of over
loaded stomachs. Working the brain
ever so moderately on a stomach gorged
with indigestible food may re?ult in
dyspepsia, paralysis orconsuraptioc; and
the same might happen if the brain
were not worked at all. But, f the
stomach is properly fed and the bowels
duly attended to, no amount of study or
of headwork that any human being can
perform between sunrise and sunset will
occasion the least injury to the bruin.
Everybody's Journal.
Tins is the season of the year when
tho large city newspaper and magazine
publishers are sending out their p-os
pectuses into the country, and eiery
post-office is flooded with "great induce
ments to subscribers for this or that
periodical. This is all right, provided
you do not lose sight of tho fact that
you have a newspaper nearer your own
door that is a hundred times more closely
identified with your prosperity, and nore
sincerely interested in the wellan of
your neighborhood and county, than all
the city publications combined. A oo
temporary says on this subject:
"Do tin city papers say anything in
regard to your own couuty? Nothing,
Do they contaiu notices of your school?,
your churches, niectinsrs, improvements,
and hundreds of other local matters of
interest, which the county papers pub-
lish without pay? Not au item. 'Do
they ever sny a word calculated to
draw attention to our county and its
numerous thriving towns, nnd aid in
their progress and enterprise
riot a
line. And yet there are men who take
such contracted views of this matter,
that unless they are getting as many
square inches of reading matter in their.
county paper a3 they do in a city paper,
think they are not getting the worth of
their money It reminds us of the
person who took the largest pair of boots
in the box because tho same as a pair
much smaller that fit him.

New 1871 Perfect
A GREAT IMPROVEMENT
OVER ALL OTHER WRINGERS.
IT WRINGS FASTER THAN BV HAND.
We consider the Providence superior to
all others, for the following reasons:
1st. The ROLLERS, of large size and
best quality of White Rubber, are all se
cured to thmr bhutts in the most perma
nent manner, by the Moulton Process, mak.
ing the best Roller in (ho World.
2d The PATENT MENTAL JOURNAL
CASINGS prevent any wear upon the
journals.
The wooden journal in which the iron
shafts of other machines run, soon wear,
and tho efficiency of the Wringer is there
by greatly reduced.
3d. The DUUULl. sruiAL UUU3 used
on this Wringer give the utmost ease and
B'eadinees in working, while the double
stop prevents them from bottoming or be
ing thrown out of gear. We furnish either
single or double gear Providence, as de
sired, 4i h. The ADJUSTABLE CURVED
CLAMP readily adjusts this Machine to
tubs of any size or thickness, making a per
fect fastening. No wooden pegs or rubber
straps on this Clamp.
6th. SIMPLICITY STRENGTH and
BEAUTY, are combined in this Machine,
with all the requisities of a first-class
Wringer.
