Another Swindle. We notice by
our exchanges that a new swindling
gaiuo has been discovered in various
places, which consists in an ag;nt call
ing at a house and displaying a number
of sealed envelopes containing samples
of silk, merino, caiicj, etc., collecting
twenty-five cents for a choice and prom
ising to send a dre?s pattern like the
sample in the envelop chosen, for the
snull suu of one dillir; but ucither
man nor dress is ever seen afterward.
Oar readers should look out for these
swindlers.

Are the patrons of our public school
aware that every day their childreu
spend in our elegant new school house,
they are exposing their health because
the furnace intended to warm the build
ing proves insuffioien'. for that purpose?
Let those who are interested attend to
this, that the proper steps may be taken
to have this evil remedied, and imme
diately, for ' this of all things needs
prompt aotiou. It U simply a system of
" tor ure to students and teachers to coin
peltnem to shiver through these cold
vriner days, in a room insufficiently
warned, resulting in nothing but evil,
for reither teachers or scholars can do
theuselves justiee while laboring in an
nnoonfortable school room. The at-
tentim of the school directors is called
to tha matter. It would seem the bet
ter plan to be to a little extra expense
to provide for the comfort of the schools
than to pa; doctor bills next Spring.

Death from Blowing Down a
Lamp Ciiimkey. The Luzerne Union
records another terrible accident re
sulting from the too common practice of
blowing down a lamp chimney to ex
tinguioh the light. The casualty oc
curred in Cleveland, Pa., a few uights
since. Mrs. Elizabeth Stark dUrobed
to retire about 10 o'clock. She at
tempted to extinguish her coal oil lamp,
in a very common manner, by blowing
down the chimney. The lamp exploded,
throwing over ber the blazing liquid.
and in an instant she was enveloped in
flames and was terribly burned. There
seems no end to accideuts resulting from
the careless use of ktrosne, and people
cannot be too careful how they manage
and handle their lighted lamps.

Hints on Health.
First of all, see to it that you start
right. It is vitally important. Avoid
all hereditary taints, lie continually
anxious about yourself. Remember we
are fearfully and wonderfully made, and
this curious mechanism may at any timo
get out ot repair. It may break down
altogether. 1 his is death.
Be on the lookout for symptoms
They generally precede a disease. Con
sult your pulse every halt hour, and
make sure by lrequent personal obser
vations that your tongue isn't coated.
lou should weiirh yourself at least Once
a day, though it is not necessary to test
your lungs more than once a week
Keep your feet aud your friendship
warm.
Food is veiy important. No mau
can live long without it. That China
men succeed in doing it, and laying up
money besiaes, proves nothing. 1 our
lood should be taken in moderation.
avoiding overeating, to which one is
very prone when dimug at somebody
eli-e's expense; and equally cautious not
to cat too little, unless you happen to oc
cupy a seat at a cheap boarding house.
A good, plain, nutritious diet is what
you want. Mention it to your landlady
and you'll probably get it.
I cannot lay down any special rules as
to what you'd better eat. Breadstuff's
are bad. Never eat bread. The pro-
ocss by which the article is rendered
light and white is very deleterious to
health. Never eat hot cakes nor cold
ones. Corn bread is fatal. Take to the
wheat in grain; carry some in your
pockets, and cbew the lood nature de
signed for you. If your teeth are bad,
or you have none, soak the wheat in
castor oil. For dinner you want some
thing substantial poik, for example.
If you choose pork, stick to it right
through the year; many a man has
built himself up in the poik packing
business; and then abrupt changes are
dangerous.
For tea something very light should
bo taken, such as lobsters and milk, cu
cumbers and ice cream, or cold mince
pic, pickles and hard cider. Then for
lunch (which is to be eaten, of course,
immediately before going to bed), we
have always found plenty of sourkrout,
iVelsh rabbit; pickled walnuts, hot saler
atus biscuit, with London porter and
green tea, very agreeable and soothing.
Take plenty of exercise in the open
air, or in a treadmill, if well ventilated
Join a circus. Walking is excellent; so
running, particularly if you can run
ahead of your ticket.
Men who do not believe in advertising
are about the first ones to rush to the
editor when they get into a scrape, to
get him not to mention it.
As daylight can beseen through very
(wall holes, so little things will illus
trate a person's uharacteer.

Hair Vigor. In common with
many others we have felt a lively inter
est in the investigations which Dr.
Ayer has been making to discover the
causes of failure of the hair, and to pro
vide a remedy. His reseaiches are said
to have been much more thorough and
exhaustive than any ever made before.
The result is now before us under tho
name of Ayer's Hair Vigor. We have
given it a trial, and with full satisfaction.
It equals our most favorable anticipa
tions. Our gray hairs have disappeared,
or resumed their original color; and a
visible crop of solt, silken hair has
started on part of the scalp which was
entirely bald. Daily Voice. Boston

the Iron Bridge at Burlington, .and
called the Burlington Route,
The Main line of the Route running

ing route to California.' The Middle
Branch, entering Nebraska at Platts
mouth, passes through Lincoln, the
State Capital, and will this year be
finished to Fort Kearney, forming the
shortest route across the Continent by
over 100 miles.
Another branch of the B. M., di

Passengers by this route to Kansas,

Lovers of fine views should remem

Land-buyers will be sure to remem
ber it, for they have friends among the
two thousand who have already bought
farms from Geo. S. Harris, the Land
Commissioner of the B. & M. R. R. at
Burlington, Iowa, or among the four
thousand home-steadors and pre-emptors
who last year filed claims in the Lincoln
