Hand Raw.d. Last Thursday, 7th inst., Daniel Turley, working at Grant's mills this county, had two fingers of his left hand taken off by an edger. Tho wound was dressed by Dr. Bordwcll who pronounces it a bad one. The result of the election in Maine, on the 11th inst., is most gratifying and glorious for tho Republican party. The majority on the State ticket will exceed that of last year by some 2,000 or 3, 000, instead of being deccased as the Democrats fully hoped it would be. Dr. G. Wiiifflh showed us some specimens of teeth, two of which he ex tracted for C. 1 1. Cody of this place, and two for W. Colling of Kane, which measure lrora one inch to ono inch and a fourth in length. The Alerts, of this place, sustained a tremendous defeat at the hands of the Lightfoot club, of Brook vii'.e, on Saturday last. The former elub left here cm Friday accom panied by a few friends, and arrived in Brookviile by six o'clock, where they were met by members of the Ligh tfout club at the American House. Friday evening and Saturday morning whs speut in sauntering around and viewing tho town, and on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock both clubs appeared on the ground ready for play, Mr. 0. i. Rich ards having been chosen umpire, play was called at 2:45 with the Lightf'octs ut the bat, the Alerts havir.g won the toss. It is unnecessary for us to give a de tailed accouut of the game from its nitre tediousn ess. It was long and Un interesting, made to by the bad playing of the Ilidgway boys. We havo seen the Alerts play a good game of ball, and had some hopes that they would sustain their hitherto good reputation at baud ling the ball and bat, but we must say that the playing indulged iu by them ou Saturday, would havo disgraced a nine that never saw a base ball. To be sure, the Alerts played at a disadvantage, several of the players were out of con dition; the grounds were not what would be called fair grounds, being "bounded on one side by the river (into which balls were repeatedly kuocked), and on the other side by a corn field. This, added to other disadvantages, led them to play the worst game ot ball they were ever guilty of playing. The re turn game will be pl.iyed iu this place iu the course of a few weeks, when we hope to see the Alert boys make a letter und wore creditable show than they did at Brookville, as we know they can and should do it. Pottsvi'.lc, Sept- 9. The people of Schuylkill county, looking to an inde pendent judiciary, have nomlonted Judge Souther, now on the Schuylkill county bench, for additional law judge of that district, and Nicholas Leitsingei, Esq., of Tauiaqua, lor Associate Judge of tho county. The Republicans of Schuylkill had made no nominations upon their ticket for these two offices, looking to this action by the peoplo independent of party; and as the Democracy Lave nominated niero party hacks, the elec tion of Messrs. Souther and Leitsiingcr is a foregone conclusion. Judge Souther is very popular on the bench, and has been a moderate Republican, while Mr. Leilzinger, no less popular, and of the tieople has been a moderate Democrat. Ion. F. W. Hughes, of Pottsville, is among the lend;ng Democrats who fa vors this movement. This will render tho campaign in Schuylkill lively and interesting. The Natural Wealth of Penn sylvania. The agricultural and min eral resources ot the State of Pennsyl vania ure almost beyond computation, and I had a vivid impression both of the size and natural wealth of my adopted State in a it-cent trip from Allentown to the "oil regions" From here to Maueh Chunk the Lehigh river bank is dotted with blast furnaces; then you wind up through the Lehigh und Wy oming coal regions; then up tho north branch of the Susquehanna, wiihuu "in terval" that rivals a Western prairie; then along through southern New York, just above and parallel with our northern tier . ot counties, until you come iuto Pennsylvania again and get into a region where nothing is talked about or thought about but oil wells. Push on through the oil producing dis trict and the bituminous coal fields will soon be reached, and then you will have se.m something of Pennsylvania and her natural wealth. With a little more tf the New England lanufacturiug en terprise and industry established iu this State, it will be as near perfection as can bo well reached in this.imperlect world, and wi'l easily be able to subsist ten millions of people instead of three. The tiiuo of year being nt hand for persons to put up stoves, it behooves all to examine their flues and chimneys, and see that theyare secure against communicating fire to their buildings. Those who are now layiug iu their stock of coal lor winter use, are, no doubt, exceedingly aunoyed by the huge uiuouut of uu.it which it contains, gaud which iu the process of unloading, completely covers everything in the coul cellar. All this can bo obvialedjby throwing a pail or two of water onjj eucli load bet'oio it is thrown iuto the cellar. This not only prevents the dust from circulating, but also improves the coal lor .burning, by washing out the fine pieces and the dust. This is simple and easy. Trjit.
