Water.
Uremics onr duty at this time to
ca)i-he attention of oar Ridgway read
iH to the suljeet of water; believing it
will bo of interest to them. It is well
known to all that we have one of the
fiuost springs of the best water in the
world, which, t property lonSncd and
economized would supply a town of
IU,UUU inhabitants, but at presout it is
allowed to run to waste. There appears
to be two reason why every man has not
a supply of water ut liia door. The
first and principle one is the want of a
rcsevoir of sufficient capacity to hold
iho water, and, second, the want of a
tnaiu pipe Jarge enough to convey the
water to the town. Now, we have heard
t-everal suggestions made in regard to
the manner in which this can be done,
but t'do one that appear to fill the order
is this: Let a eompany be organized
nnd chartered, with suffioiout power to
build losevoiM, lay pipes, and supply
oacb fauiily .with wiir.cr; this company
to issue shares, en'kling each man that
b:iys a share to a supply ol wx.tcr.
Those that do not buy shares, and are
supplied wkh varer, to be tixed in pro
jmraun to the amount received. A"ain
there appears tc bs, iu tho minds of
Mime, a dotiot ns to the leal title ol
this water privile-je, but, if they will
take the trouble of g'tng to the pro
thonotaiy's office and looking in Mis
cellaneous book A, page 150, they will
find a deed recorded, pivin to the
County Commissioners, the privilege of
uiirig said water for . the use of the
county building and the benefit of tho
pubiio generally. If this nutter bo
taken bold of, and water works in Ridg
way become a reality, it can be so ar
ranged that in case of lire any part of
the town can be fl.-wi.iej with' watir.
This will have the effect of making in
surance cheaper and will be a blessing
which can nut be overestimated. We
ure upon our citizens the uecessity of
taking steps in this matter at once.
Post up tho books, gentlemen.
How about the differences being
settled, nud who settled them?

Br Careful. in these dsys, when
tight bats, hot air, and sedentary occu
pations, cause the bair to fall out, it is
a matter of no little importance to know
which of the hah preparations are of
any value. The majority, as has been
frequently proved by the first dermato
logists, or hair-doctors, possoss little or
no merit. Such being the fact, it is
I consoling to those who are afflicted to
iknow there is really one good article,
Which is recommended and used by tho
first medical authority, and has stood
every test, many years. This prepara
tion is Hall's Vegetable Sicilian Hair
Renewer, a truly scientific compound,
which is unquestionably the. best pre
paration of the kind now before the
American pubiio. It will restore to
gray hair its original color, cloanso the
head thoroughly, cure all eruption of
the scalp; and will always restore the
bair so long as any germs remain, as
they almost invariably do, until extreme
old age has destroyed the roots. The
original article is made by R. P. Hall
& Co., Nashua, N. II. Forney's Press,
Jan. 25, 1868.

A local paper asserts that the dogs of

Will the Gazette please inform us
whether they consider Messenger a
heavy or lightweight?
No people under heaven can excel
the Americans in the manly art of sit
on a bench and seeing eighteen men
play ball. Chicago Tribune.
Who killed Messenger? I for in
stance? Dear Advocate: Passing along
the street this morning, I met your
correspondent ''Civil Engineer;" he
was bent as it beneath a heavy burden
or the snows of many winters. As I
approached I perceived that his face
was very sad, and I accosted him with
the familiar phrase "was feld," He
taokod up and said, "is that you, Jack?
Well may you ask 'what's tho matter.' "
The heavy man of the county, he who
killed Messenger, has dropped upon
me from Gazette and Democrat and I
am eternally smashed, triturated,
ground into au impalpable powder; it is
not me you see, but a ghost, a shadow.
How much are these auricular appen
dages elongated?" Soeing that some
thiog troubled my friend I proposed
that we should adjourn to Tommy
Zimmett's and try "Zwei Lager." No
sooner said than done after C. E. had
put himself outside of a couple of
glasses of Lancaster in a most artistic
manuei', he seemed to come to himself
and taking a lien on the bar he ad
dressed me thusly:
"Jack, hast seen Gazette and Demo
cratV I yea'ed and he proceeded:
"Jack, are my ears excessively pro
longed, or has the Sapient Dogberry,
the 'Gentleman from Elk,' who edits
the organs of progressive democracy
merely glanced in a mirror, and, seeing
his own reflection, coocludod it was
me? If so I can understand why 'nine
cubic feet make a square yard.' "
'I bad a dream last night I retired
oppressed by the undeserved attacks
of the legislator which had been pub
lished iu Gazette and Democrat. Dur
ing the evening I had endeavored to re
cuperate, but lager wasn't sufficient for
the purpose and when I slept, the bur
den of that awful assault, dictated by
all the brains of the Democracy of Elk
county, rpmaini with me. My sleep
was disturbed and I dreamed
"I was standing in a broad street, to
my right was a palatial building gleam
ing with lights and resonant with musio
and merry laughter. Opposite it stood
gloomy, grimy building, looking like
bu'e machine shop, its windows
lighted by the baleful glare of sulphu
rous fires. As I wondered at the soene,
a bright presence stood near me, and
him I asked what were the two build
ings so unlike iu appearance. 'Look,'
he said, pointing across the street, and
from the door opposite issued a being
most grotcsquo horus were upon his
head aud bis feet were the hoofs of an
ox; tho awful apparatiou grinned a
hideous smile aud pointed to an inscrip
tion over the door which read in letters
of fire 'HALL.' 'We used to spell it
with an E,' said the demon grinning, but
of late have changed all that,' and now
I saw inscribed ever tho entrance,
'None but ringstcrs roocived here.'
'Look again,' said the presence at my
side, and I now saw coming down the
street, a procession each- ODe bearing a
banner having upon it a motto, as they
approached I read among others:
'Three per cent, for receiving and
three per cent, for disbursing.'
'Nine crubio feet make a square yard.'
'Two dollars and forty cents for earth
excavation.'
'Nino dollars a perch for masonry.'
'Audit the accounts as we state
them.'
'Wo go for the spoils.'
'The ring forever.'
'Put none but members of the ring
ou guard to-uight.'"
"Tho procession wai led by a dapper
little fcllor, with a stove pipe hat, who
bore a banner inscribed, 'I, for in
stance, I carry Elk county in my
breeohes pocket.' To him the devil
said, liorrect, my friend, I see you
have brought them all; let them enter
The procession passed on into the
gloomy building and the door was
closed, but through the windows I could
see the grimy firemen each pick up a
riogstetr on a barbed pitchfork, and
hold hi m before the blazing fires, turn,
ing and returning them, until each
crackle! and sizzled, pnfied up and
burst like a roasted chestnut, then
weie filed up in a corner for future
reference. As soon as this wha over I
heard a step coming down the street
and turning I saw Messenger approach
leg me. His step was light and free,
and a smile illumined his countenance.
The presence at my side greeted bira
warmly, 'Welcome, Messenger, welcome
to the home of honest men, though you
weigh but sixteen ounces to the pound.
Yuu have been read out of the ring in
time enter, both.' We followed him
into the house. On every side was
light; beautiful flowers pleased the
eye; lipe fruits were piled around and
fountains with jets of rose water cooled
and perfumed the air. Pointing to
luxurious seats our guide exclaimed,
'Rest weary brethren, all here is yonrs,
this is the home of honest men, this
the reward of those who care for the
welfare of the people. Enter upon
your reward.'
"Alas! it was bnt a dream, and I
awoke to find that it was still necessary
to work to make the people understand
how they were wronged, and why so
much of their hard earned money was
required for taxes."
I listened attentively and as my friend
concluded I wished that it was indeed
true that the ring had gone to its home.
It is, however, only a question ot time.
The people will yet deprive them ot the
spoils and the little devils make merry
over their roasting carcasses.
Yours muchly, ,
Andrew Jackson.
