Babe Ball. The Alerts, of this
place, and the Rough and Readys, of
Fenfield, Clearfield county, played a
match game of base ball at Ccnterville
last Saturday. The weather was very
cold and atrong wind waa blowing
during the greater part of the game.
It U haraly necessary to state that "our
hoj$ were tha vioton, defeating thai
Hough, and Readyl by a score of 34 to
12, a very decided defeat. The Bough
and Readys defeated all the eluba they
playod with at the Clearfield county
fair, but the Alerts pTovcd too much for
them. This game closes tho base ball
season in this vicinity, leaving the
Alerts champions of Clearfield, Elk and
Ccntae counties a good place to atop
at. May they keep up their organize

absence ot pestilenoe, foreign war and

the last negro sold in the United States
was during Lee's retreat from Peters
burg. The price paid was one hundred
Drumhead cabbage plants. Only an

The Grafton Bank Robbery .
On Saturday evening the officers and
watchman of the Grafton bank, of Graf
ton, Mass., which was recently robbed
of a large amount of money and bonds,
went to New York to identify, if possi
ble, Wm. Dunn, the burglar whom
Capt. Walsh had arrested on suspicion
of being one ot the gang. A hotel
keeper at Worcester, Mass , at whose
house a party of men, supposed to be
the bank thieves, took breakfast on the
morning after the robbery, also ac
companied the bank officers. The
watchman failed to identify Dunn as
one of the men who bound and gagged
bim, aod the hotel-keeper was certain
that Dunn was not of the party who
took breakfast at his house. There
being no evidence to warrant the
further detention of the prisoner,
Justice Dowliog, before who he was
taken, discharged him. State Journal.
St. Louis, Oct. 31. A fight be
tween Tom Allen and James Gallagher
will come off to-morrow, at the old
battle ground, about 20 miles down the
river. Both men are said to be in good
condition.
Two other fights will take place in
the same ring, one between Jack
Madden, alias Haincr, and Jerry Fecn,
otherwise knowo as Macie Nouce; the
other between Mike O'conner and John
Morris, both for purses- Large numbers
of thieves, from New York and other
places, are here, and Mace and Joe
Coburn are expected.
Theexcurtionists who left here some
days ago to visit the fairs at Atlanta
and Augusta, have returned aftet a
most enjoyable trip.
We regret, as much as any body that
affairs in New York, says an exchange,
compel the Government to order soldiers
to be in tho city 'on election day. I
seems terrible that citizens in any part
of the country cannot- go to the palls
safety without the aid of the military
But such is the case in New York city
The Democratic papers are very much
afraid there will be an honest vote, and
they arc in a dreadful way.- If the city
only polls a legal vote we will carry the
State by at least 20,000.
Newark., Oct. 31. At uoon to-day
large frame building in process of
erection, on Pennsylvania avenue, was
prostrated by high wind, and two car
penters ac work on tne scaffolding a
tho time, were inj ured. A dwelling: at
East Newark was also blown down
No one was injured.
Jersey City, Oct. '31. This after
noon a high embankment, at the corner
of Palisade and Hobokeu avenues, this
city, caved in and fatally crushed i
laborer named David Lronan. feubse
fluently, in continuing the excavation
the workmen discovered a dead boy,
named Samuel McAdaois, 10 years old,
buried at the same time.
Jacob Hill, a hotel proprietor in this
city, is under arrest, charged with the
murder of his wife, whose boay was
found in her bedroom, yesterday after
noon, by ber son. An inquest is being
held.
General Cox has retired from the
nterior Department, and on Tuesday,
Hon. Columbus Delano assumed the
uties ot Secretary ot the Interior.
The retiring member of the Cabinet
as been fortunate in winning the con
fidence of the people in an extraordi
nary degree, i rom all quarters comes
the regret that the government loses
is valuable services- As Commissioner
Interior Revenue, Mr. Delano has
wou the esteem o! the people; we may
therefore hope he will make a worthy
successor of Mr. Cox.
