The inhabitants of the townships on the

road are greatly excited at the rumor that
the directors of thnt road have ruortgased

As the citizens bound themselves to a con

Soldiers' Bounties. The House, on
the 17th inst., upon motion of Mr. Cobb,
of Wisconsin, brought up and passed a bill
equalizing the bounties of soldiers who
served during the rebellion.
The bill provides for a bounty of 88 33 J

dered, deduoting all bounties previously
received under former acts of Congress.
On Saturday of last week the bodies of
two little girls were found in a race or
sluice-way, near white's river, Illinois,
who it was supposed at the time were acci
deotly drowned. Further developments
by the coroner's jury reveal the horrible
fact that the elder of the two bad been out
raged and murdered, and the youngest was
murdered to prevent her giving information.
There was only eighteen inches of water

" Lifi in Utah ; or the Mysteries and
Crimes of Mormonism ; being an export
of their secret riiet and ceremonies, with a
full and authentic history of Polygamy
and the mvrtnon sect, from its origin to the
pretext time ;" ly J. II. Beadle, editor of
the Salt Lake Reporter, is the title of a
valuable work just issued by the National
Publishing Co., Philadelphia, Pa.
For nioro than thirty years the world has
been horrified, startled and perplexed by
the audacity and bucccss of a sect calling
themselves Mormons. Though founded in
fraud, this sect has succeeded in spite of all
opposition, until it is to-day the standing
reproach ot our country.
The Author's long residence in Utah and
his position as Editor of the leading journal
of that Territory, peculiarly qualified him
to write this work. Mormonism has been
productive of so many dark and strange
mysteries so many terrible crimes that
few can comprehend, without an intimate
knowledgo of it, how much wickedness it
has to answer for, and what a standing
menace to order and society it is.
The work shows how Joe Smith and
Hrighnm Young have been enabled to de
ceive and cheat their followers ; how by
leading them on from crime to crime, and
enticing them with licentious baits, they
have succeeded in maintaining their influ
ence over them ; and treats of the Mormon
religion, its infamous and heathenish char-
actor, its multiludo of gods, its abominable
doctrines and practices, revealing many
strange and outrageous ceremonies, Of
the Endmcment or initiation ceremonies,
showing how obscene and disgusting they
are ; how female modesty is outraged in
them, and how licentiousness is taught as a
part of their religious creed.
It is important that the public should
know what manner of people are growing
up in our very midst- This work gives a
full and authentic account of their degra
ded social condition, their bjejphemouB
rites and cereuiouies, their sacrilegious doc
trincs and practices, and is the most thrill-. I
ing and startling account of licentiousness
and crime ever published. It is calculated
to do great good by giving to the public a
candid and impartial statement of a ques
tion which bids fair to cause no little troub
le. The book is sold only by subscription,
and agents arc wa&ted in every county.

At a meeting of the Wckingmcu's Un
ion, New York, one night last week, the
introduction of Chinese labor into the
country was forcibly denounced as a con
tinuance of slavery, nod Massachusetts men
were declared slavers, deserving the pun
ishment of death. Tho president of tho
meeting explained tho evils resulting from
cheap labor, and all were unonymous in
demanding from Congress such measures
as woujd put a stop to the importation of
Chinese. Resolutions to this eflct were
adpted, and several speakers urged that if
this fail resotirso should be had to arms.
A mass meeting of workin'men to protest
against the impovtotion and enployment of
Chinese, was to be held this week.

A few days since a drunken man living
in Collinsville, Conn., attempted to walk
ovci' tho high trestle-work by the railroad
bridge, with his little child, three years old,
id his arms. The father staggered and fell
on the track, letting go of his child,
which fell through between tho ties, but
instinctively clung to the father's coat, sus
pended sixteen feet from thegrounl. Some
men near by hastened to the rescue and
saved the child from a fearful fall, and took
it home to the mother.
