Insane. Yesterday morning, gays the
Erie Dispatch of the loth., John Authony,
proprietor of" Authouy's Hotel," uear the
Union Depot, was taken to Pittsburg by'a
.if personal friends, for rctuo-
Dixmont Hospita!, to treated for
insanity. He lias been insane at intervali
for several weeks, and about a week ago, in
one of his fits, atte mpted the life of one of
bia boaiders, aud finally severely injured
himself. The fit was upon him, but in a
mild form, when he was removed yesterday,
aud it needed coniiderable coaxing to get
him on the train. Rsfore he would start
he was led to believe that his presence was
needed at Pittsbugh to testily ut court in
behalf of a friend. We hope he will speed
ily recover from his sal affliction.

The following Editorial notice appears
in " 7'Ae Advocate," which is the organ of
the Methodist E. Church in Buffalo:
"Catarrh Remedy. We think we do
the publio a favor, by calling the atten
tion of those afflioted with catarrh, to the
remedy advertised in our columns, as "Dr.
Sage's Catarrh Remedy." A eon of ours
has been seriously afflicted with catarrh
for several years, and having tried various
remedies without success, we began to fear
that in his case there was no cure. But
a tew months use of the above medicine
has entirely removed all tiaoes of the di.
sease.
"We write the above not lor pay. but
for the information of those afflicted, aud
as an aot of justice to those by whom we
have been benefitted."
It ia sold by druggists for fifty cents.
A. J. Foster, of Tidioute, recently took
it into his head to retire from the busy con.
cerns of life, beoause a fair and frail wo.
man refused to smile en him. He disap
peared, and a letter was found statins that
he had drowned himself in the river. He
was subsequently found at Parker's Land
tng alive. Mr. Foster was once considered
a steady, unpoetioal, sensible young man,
and has lived in Tidioute several years.
making himself useful, and till lately re.
spectcd. So says the Forest Republican.
The treasurer of the Stanton fund, re
ports that Philadelphia alone baa raised
thirty-eight thousand dollara for the family
of the late Edwin M. Stanton.
OUR CHINAMAN.
Amelia Eliza says I must say something
about our Chinaman that Mr. John Y. Fos
ter engaged for us on his recent visit to Call
fornia.
This Chinaman camo to the villa about a
week nco iu good order.
The ticket Mr. Foster & Co. tied to his
pigtail with our street and number cm it,
was a capital idea. It expedited bis de
livery, and he was just passed along trom
one city to ar.othcrlto his rmht destination
Amelia Eliza is delighted with Inm, and
she tells all her lady friends that she means
to have another like him just to do upstairs
work.
Of course these ladies wero shocked at
any such novel institution as a he-chamber
maid. But they all sang another song
when she shewod them a bed that Chang
had made up.
1 o-day Chani; offered to braid her hair
for her.
She was a littlo startled at this rropnsi.
tion, and asked mo if she should let bim
try.
I said, certainly.
So Chang camo into the sitting. room and
went to work, but the poor fellow bad a
terrible fright when he discovered that her
back hair was an entirely distinct affair
from her other scalp covering.
He loosed at me as much as to say
'Is this your work f Did you pull ail this
out at the root ? Is this the way American
gentlemen treat their wives ?"
I explained to bitu that it was not her
own hair, but had been purchesed down iu
.Newaik. 1 hat that was tho style among
all the UJies now.
I am afraid that I was a little hard on
the ladies in general.
As a washer he s a succesp on anything
but his own hands and face.
lie irons well, but Eliza had to show him
at first.
When she showed him, she did as most
amateur laundresscss do Fpit on the iron
to see if it be hot enough.
M'hen Chang wants to iron he always
comes to her with the same iroti to be spit
on.
I showed him how to light the fire, usins
Tiibune to ignite the wood with. I
found out afterwards that he hunts all over
the bouse for a Tiibune, mpposinir that 1
want him to use only that particular news
paper for such purpose.
Ibis incident 1 believe, is highly charac-
eristio of the nation ho repieseets.

ELK COUNTY GAG LAW.
The Legislature of tho Commonwealth
ot its last session passed a law iu nnd for
Elk County, Pa., to aid the physicians of
that county in obtainiuir their bread and
butter, aud compelling the people to em
ploy them or have co phjsiecian. Al
though 1 believe this law to be unristitu
tioual, I do not wish to place myself iu the
hands of the physicians of that county,
neither do I wish to pay the license of 8400
dmanded for the privilnge of visiting my
numerous patients in said territory. I will
say to the sick aud afflicted residing iu the
couuty of Elk, that who see fit to uicet me
at in, appointments at Emporium or Drift
wood, Pa., I will agree to furnish proper
treatment at at much less than the usual
price, and will also deduct from such re
duced price the amount of railroad fare
paid by them in making such visit.
