Some ono who has evidently seen the world, and experienced whereof ha speaks, gives vent to his fueling as follows : " If you wish to keep a town from thriving, don't put i'p any more buildings than you can conveniently oc cupy yourselves. It you should accidently have an empty dwelling and any one wants to ront it, ask him about three times the actual valuo for it. Demand a Shylock price for every ppot of grojnd God has given you stewardship over. Turn a cold shoulder on every mechanic or bus'uess man seeking a homo among you. Look at every new comer with a scowl. Run down the work of every new workman. Go abroad for wares rather than trado with those wh o seek to do business in your midst. Fail to advertise or in any way support your paper, sa that people abroad may not know whether any business is going on in your place or not. Wrap yourselves up with yourselves, and cover yourselves up with a coat of imperious selfishness. There is no more effectual way to retard tho growth of a town thnn actions like these enumerated. The Pennsylvania State Temperance Union through its agents has presented to audiences in different parts of the State, not less than three hundred Temperance Sermons, and ad dresse, this year. These have been spoken at the instance, and by tho request of, Lodges of Good Templars, Divisions of Sons of Temper ance, Temples of Honor, and Temperance Churches, schools, and private individuals. The lecturing force has been, and desires still to be, constantly employed in pleading for total abstinence and prohibition. All persons who desire to hear the claims of the cause presented wisely, and acceptably,, can be grati fied by writing to William Nicholson, Esq., 115 South 7th St. Philadelphia, or to Rev. Powell Combe, 613 Arch St. Philadelphia. A Temperance Convention is to be held at Harrisburg in February next- Fatal Accidekt. On last Monday evening (Nov. 30) Lorenzo Brownleo of Caledonia this county, met with a shocking and sudden death. He and others were in the woods cut'ing down trees for Bawlogs. About dark they fe'.l a tree intending it to complete the day'a work. It struck an old rotten stump twenty-five or thirty feet in highth, causing it to oscillate for a few momenta, and soon it ceased moving, and all thought the stump would not fall, si th e started home, but a they were passing, it sud denly fell striking the deceased and breaking tits neck, back, leg and arm causing instant death. The unfortunate man leaves a wife and two shildren to mourn their loss. He was 28 years of ogc. Bur at Home. If you do not support home enterprise how do you expect to be sustained yourself in a home business T Some persons have a perfect mania for going out of town to purchase that which they can buy at hone, as though a foreign artiole was better than the same at bom. This is deoidedly wrong, and detrimental to the place in which you live. " Live and let live," should be ourmoto. The only way to build up and keep a town alive is to spend your monov at heme. By so doing you will not be compelled to sell cut and go elsewhere in order to find a "live town-" Tiik Poor. As the winter is already at our doors and tireless hearth and empty pantries, must follow a scarcity of out-doer labor, we should not forget in the midBt of our abun dance, the wants of the suffering poor. There are families in our town who require looking after, and those who have been blessed with abundance of this world's goods, should open their hearts and their purse strings to the wants and necessities of others. The rich can afford to be liberal when, called upen for the exercise of Christian charity and benevolence, and no stronger appeal to their sympathies could be presented than an army of .helpless women at d children suffering the pangs of hun ger and of want, If there are any such at pres ent in our midst, let them be properly cared for. The Almighty has lavished His blessings upon our country during the year that is passed. Our fields have been crowned with plenty, and our garners are overflowing with the fruit of the harvest. Give to the needy and let the poor he provide! for. It is a Chiistian duty, to say nothing of that chain of sympathy which liiks us together in a common humanity. Mispent Evenings. The boy who spends an hour of each evening lounging on a street cor ner, wastes in the course of a single yeaf three hundred and sixty-five precious hours, which, if applicdto Btudy, would familarize him with the rudiments, at least, of almost any of the familiar sciences.' If in addition to the wasting of an liur each evening ho Bpends five cents for a cigar, which is usually the case, the amount thus worse than wasted, would pay for four of the leading magazines of the country. Think how much precious time and good money you are wasting, and for what ? The gratification afforded by the liunge on the cor ner or by the cigar is not only temporary, but positively hurtful. You acquire idle and waste ful habits, which will cling to you with each succeeding year. You may in after life shako them off ; but the probabilities are that habits thus formed in early life will remain with you till your dying day. Be cautioned then in time, and resolvethat as the hour spent in idle ness is gone forever, you will improve each passing ono, and thereby fit yourselves for use fulness and happiness.
