grs. Phillips was ori the very pinnacle of. relict
ty.- 'l3ba was the mother of a baby that weighed
eleven Ovule.
" air. Phillips bid fair fo lose hie mind entirely.
11s &Awed and sang, and fired gime from the top
of hit onm house; whistled Yankee Doodle while
eating his breakfast, and wrong the necks of
Towle on the place to make a chickeri Pie for.the
'celebration.

their.wretched little olive plants. • 1 - '
Now, Mrs. PhillieS said, she gnessed they would
laugh 'out of the other side: - There had never :
been enlarge' a baby born in Smithfield before.
Mrs. Jones!, only weighed nine pounds, and had
it pug - nose ',Mrs. Saeiyere was red haired and
had a. mole on his right.foot—a sure sign that:it
would, come to a bad end—and only weighed
seven pounds and fourteen ounces! She guessed'
'peoplehad' better look at home before they
laughed. • . •
Baby proved to be a Tartar. He had a temper
like a windmill, and seemed detennined to de.:
selep his feet anttlenge to the utmost while he
had leisure, for he acreamed and kicked twenty:-
three out of the twenty-four home.
But his mother declared be was an angel. . We
Sever can imagine an ang e l with puffy red cheeks,
heels-elevated in the air, secking•a 'sugar teat;
and being bounced about in a pillow cradletotte
toe of "High diddle dee !" lint then our irtmginae
Dania not by spy means so vivid as it might be.
From Aim hour in which he was born,Le was
' the Autocrat of the household; everything had
to bow to his nod. • .
The seellery door creaked ; it eras taken ofl,-the
hinges, and the' servant was in'the•deaft all the
time because ehe might disturb the baby. For .
the mane reason the ceffeetinfli was moved into ,
the woodshed, the dishes must be washed out of
doers—the clatter of the plates made baby scream;
the washing was done is the barn ; all the clocks
in the house - tiere stopped ; the deg was muzzled,
and the cat choked—all from the fear of disturh-:
ink the baby.
'Mr. Phillips paid a, blacksmith who was located
Sithin a quarter pf a Mile, one inindred dollars
to move his shop, and Biddy was moved to the
cock loft of the wood abed on acciiiint of anoiini.
The child's diseases were legion. It was a son

Mr. Phillips sprang"out and listened.—" Good

Mr. P hillips got a'. light, and the anxious pa

"Oh; hea v ens!" cried hie motheri,"his face is
actually purple! he's going to have the:Scarlet

"It may' be where. he's laid on it," remarked
Mr. Phillips.
"Laid. on it, eh! you unfeeling man, you un

"See to me I've beard my mothet say it was ,
the sign of a healthy child to suck its thumb, but

bad one, I forget which."
"Bun; Charles, for a doctor! Its going. to die—'
I know' it is ! Oh, dOn't stop to dress—dorit. It

herbs she's got! and. do hurry. Charles, do!
Mercy on us! it's sucitieg both thumbs now—
Charles, run!"
Mr. Phillips caught up the fir4it, articles of
. clothing he could Tay hands' on, which proved to
be his wife's embroidered petticoat; bet he was
in too much baste, and altogether too much es
cited to notice dress particelarly. He flung the
garment over his head, and tied it around his ,
waist--aliPped en his shoes and plunged into the
keen air. The Doctor was asleep, and did not
care abont turning out; butbeing told that it was'
a case'of life and death, he yielded at once.
Mr. Phillips - left him dressing, and sped to the
• residence of Granny Bates. The old lady was wise,
but she was very enperstitious and believed in
..warnings and apparitions. Phillips gave a-thun
dering rap at her door, and directly a night cap . -
pad head appeared at the'upper window.
"What do you want at this time of night, and

who be ye!" said'a cracked 'mice-.. •
, Phillips stepped out and stood plainly revealed
• by the light of a dim moon. .
"Good gracious, massy !" cried the old woman,
"it's got a scolloped petticost, on( Land; I didn't
think they'd spend their time on such vanities as
that are I"

"Not I 1 I ain't in green as to trust my old

the door until he was tired, _and then made tracks
