It alsorequlrei lime, sods, - chlorine, Carbon ; and surplzuric acid. All theseexist in a soil In which the various farm crops _have grown In rotation, .with. frequent manuring. On such land, therefore, a fair crop may reasonably be ex. 'petted, vyithont manuring specially for this crop. Or if a m.xlerate application of barn nituture be made directly to the 'potato crop, whew planted on an inpoverialted soil, not *tenured for pmvions crops, a fidrproducti., u may reasonably be expected ; since barn ma - 'nare, if properly preserved, (not washed by -water from the eaves of the barn or from a 'Bide hill_aboye the- yard, till its pota,h and other soluble matters have gone . (.1 , • , :r 0 stream,) is always reliable. But -the grow ing of potatoes by the aid of barn manure, dees not seem to: me to be good policy, !or thkfoticisviriereasois lat, I belleie the barn manure gives ct speedierfilid - it'rieffer :return, if applied 1., corn, gress, - oralitoit any other crop. 2d,: Barn mtuture conduces to the 'patsy, disease, and is therefore unsafe in those yearn in which that disease prevails. . -The 'ralnerstitertillzers are safer : and If applied only . td . the extent required, "c 0,., very little," compared with the value of bans lam ready, therefore; to recommend the .following ae a substitute for barn , manure, i 4 the growing of potatoes. - For one-acre, take 8 bushels _of wood Fast:, 8 busheis. of 'quick lime_ (oyster-shell lilt should-have the prefirence, if. It can be oh tained,) 4 bushels of plaster, am! 2 bushel; of salt—maklog 20 bushels in all ; mix thor oaghlybagether,, and apply in the hill, at a rate which will cany. the 20 bushels over an The above stipplies the essential Ingredi Ants for a . large growth of potatoes, sr, d something more, provided the soil is not ex ce2. 41vely meagre ;' and if there be an excess of `these ingredient; over the requirements for the present crop, it Will be very sure to re. main the soil for the benefit of future crow.. ppecially Nirin It, be - so, if the succeedinz cropste polafees r and If the tops be left each year to rot on the ground, so that the potash 'they contain (this being the most important ingredient in the mixture,) may go to the benefit of the succeeding crop. I will here say, • that from actual experiment I have !aimed, that although rotation in crops i 3 undonbtedly beneficial, generally, the potato may be made exception, iftreated to the foregoing compost.: If any farmer chooses to grow his family store of potatoes on the same patch, or his - thousands of bushels for market, In the same -field, there can be•no objecticin, provided he will each year leave the tops scattered about pretty evenly Over the ground, and will Make thorough work with weeds. • - Less of -the compostwill suffice for the se. cond year than the first ; still leas for the third; and so on tilllomr 12 bushels will pro duceis satisfactorY result as 20- did at first. i once grew potatoes• In just this way, enough for-a family . averaging over thirty, on a.patch.of three quarters of an acre, for sev en, or eight'years in succession; or I would not recommend it to others.. The land was of a bioivnittli loam, not a strong soli natural ly, and it had previously been exhausted by long cropping , without manure. It was a soil which never - had produced potatoes o f the drat quality, but rather of a second or fhird quality, compared with titose grown on soil well supplied with the proper ingredi ents for the potato—potash, lime, etc, Nor had that kind of land produced large crops unless heavily manure-d, and *hen, in almost every . case, the crop had rotted badly. , The first year : T ploughed something like eigbfindlies'deep, planted across the furrows, putting a little of the mixture In the bills— not-more, certainly; .than at the rate of. 2..) bushels to the acre (and I think less), drop phlg. the seed iii the - mixture, and covering shallow. Not thinking how heating. such a rmature Must be; I did wrong. by covering ailallOW; and the wrong. became apparent by a few of the seed burning up, instead of coming up,—as. a s e vere drought of . twelve or fifteen days followed. The crop was, however, better than was at first promised, giving at, the rate of - just one 100 bushels to the acre, - mostly large and of the very best 'quality. • The next year, tho compost or mixture was thrown. into, the hills in such a way as to scatter it rather thinly over • a considerable space; the seed was covered four or five inches deep. All came up well, and, the crop waif splendid daring its growth—producing a profasion.of blossoras and balls, and yield ing, in autumn; a larger crop ,than the previ ous year, equally goixi in quality. During the remaining years, In .which I treated this patch in the same way as the second year, the results were equally satis factory. , • I then left the place, and my successor has since told me, that for four or five years he planted potatoes on the same ,ground, with- out applying any sort of manure whatever,. and, that he never had harvested betpr, crops 'either quantitt ot quality. The high price, of tobacco then induced him to change the potato crop for -that. : • • . Other • experience than my own 'has strengtheaed my belief In the suitableness of the foregoing mixture to the potato crop.' In short, I have'no remaining doubt of its ex cellence. It seems to meet the want of the potato. It may not prove itself an effectual remedy against the potato disease,—l do not propose it as such, 7 -and yet I have seen it: so invigorating the plant, giving its tops a stocky, upright, direction,.covered with bins. some and pendent clusters of balls, instead ofa slender, trailing form with few or no • blossoms or balls, that It measurably, at least, strengthens the growing crop against dis ease. - One thing is, certain;—during the twelve years, or , more, while the above de scribed'" practice was being carried out, no disease affected the crop in the least while on similar soils ,in the same neighbbrhood, •po tatoes were rotted badly. - • If potatoes were to_be cultivated' in this way, on cold, , sour soils; it would be advisa ble to omit the plaster, because it is of no use on.such land; -but.at the stame time, it might be well to increase the lime—that bd. ing a eweetener of sour soils. After the experiencd I have had, 'and the observations I,have made, I can think of but one objection to the growing - of potatoes long.in thia way on the same held,. and that .is, -its tendency to become. eedy, But that objection, I think can be obviated by a pe culiar, but not expensive nor &difficult Mode of caltilatidn, which I will undertake to de scribe at some future time, shotild.the Editor of the'"Practical Farmer" believe it would be Interesting to, his - readers.—Pnicrscar, Emss: ,,T A N. ftrip6.
