THE HARVEST
The country. Was nevermore interested,in
having a bountiful 'harvest, than it; is this
year. The exorbitant prices of breadituffs
dining the past year have borne severely up
on the working chases, and hsve caused se
rious complications in business, growing out
of the inability of thosi classes to labor for
lower wages and live Comfortably. - .lt is true
the high prices of breadstuffs have not been
owing to the scarcity, but rather to - specula-
tion, yet a bnuntifdl harvest is necessary to
render extensive speculation in floor and
grain. in the immediate futare, impossible.
It is therefOre, highly satisfactory, to learn
from all sections of the Country that the

is evident that President Johnson is striving
to prevent the adoption of the pending con
stitutional amendment, intended to Bemire
the national debt, in order that he may place
himself at the head of the repudiation party.
He plainly. suggested in his speech to Miles
O'Reilly that it would only be a fair compen
sation for the Southern loss in slaves. He
denounces the Governthent bond holders as
"a consolidated money oligarchy," and says.

istence by ballots just as rapidly and utterly
as the similar amount invested in. Southern
negroes has been abolished during the recent
war under showers of bullets." With the

a few weekti since, and Ellen swears that she

had a• hearing before Justice Frsiley, and was

:An arbitration,. James Pettit vs. Reading-Rail
road Company, was held at Feather's Hotel in
this. Borough, this week. Pettit was formerly a
conductor on the Road. The Company some
years since charged, him 'with embezzlement, and
the matter was compromit ed by Pettit paying the
Company $20,000. He now brings action against
the• Company, charging
_it with extortion. 'On

of Pettit, for $20,016. • ;

Death by prourning.—On the 2d haat.. Mr. Ben
jamin Kline, - of Hamburg, Berks CO., and several
years ago an employee in the saloon of Mr. C. C.'
Carter in this Borough, was drowned at Trenton,
N. J. The deceased was employed on .a canal
boat iunning to and from Philadelphia and New
York. He accidentally fell from the.-boat into
the water, and being enable to win was drowned:.
He was 46 years. of age. His remains were in
terred at Harnburg on Saturday afternoon last.

A Dangerous Road.-- , Those who drive frequent
ly between this Borough and Mahanny City, in.
form tie that the mountain road about half a mile
from St. Clair is in an exceedingly dangerous
condition. The earth • has caved in at many
places, from, mining operations, forming deep
chasms, and the wonder is, that before this, some
bfidy driving the road has not fallen into some of
them and perished. :We understand thatit is the
.duty of the land-owners at that 'pbint to lay out a
new road, the old having become so dangerous,and that they would be 'liable for damages, in
case anyperson shonldbe injured or killed by tail
