SWINE AND THEIR STIES
,
As land becomes cleared and farms regu
larly cultivated and improved,. pigs have to
be confined a portion of the year, and not al
lowed to leave the yards tactless there is a par
ticularly well fenced close for them to run in,
which there should he on ever,' farm adjoin
ing the homestead ; then in summer they can
get, half their living by grazing, and will grow
faster, and come up to be fatted in such a
healthy state that they will thrive and lay on
flesh and fat: laetterlor, the liberty they have
enjoyed. Sows kept to breed will succeed in:
raising more and better little ones for ranging .
about.n small field, with a pond or stream of
water, running' through It, and if all are ac
customed to go to their own sty every nigh',
and each lot be fed with some corn and grain,
_sad the sows With some swill, &c., they will
pay for the cxtra feed. The year before list
I was 01/ . 4 place where there was no field or
wood with a fence to prevent pigs from get
ting through or under, but there was a spa
cious yard into which the piggery opened, -
and every day the whole of them were turn -
ed into it. The last week in April a few acres
of, turnips were drilled on ridges drawn. ou t
on a poor steady hill, which had become to.
- weak to grow grain ;'.about eight tons per
acre of barnyard manure was covered in, and
they came all right and did Well. In the first
week in July the bottoms were large enough
to begin pulling, and the pigs had a one-horse
cart-load daily , till the last week in Septern
- ber. The, turnips were thrown about the
yard and greedily devoured by the old and
young, and they had nothing else till the
corn was fit to husk,' and no lot of pigs could
have done better than they did, growing and
keeping in good condition all the while, and
.towarde the latter part of the time mentioned
an extra load had to be occasionally fetched
to them, on, account .of their increased size
- Some of these pigs were miserably poor and
crippled through previous restraint, and, be
ing fed on boiled kiln dust and bran, too thin
to nourish them properly; bat they recovered,
and after harvest got very fit on corn and
Corn meal,, mixed with steamed
were
However, though these turnips pro - -
duced at little- expense, for they:were only
hoed once over by ,one Man, and horse -hoed
between . the rows twice, yet of course it
would - be still cheaper to have the pigs graze,
and the little they Would require to help them
with the grass would not cost so much as the
turnips and the hauling them home. Thirty
:four of these pigs weighed from 260 lbs. to 420
lbs., the rest being in a very profitable slate
when I left the place. Ido not advocate
cooking white turnips Tor pigs under any dr._ .
ccimstances, they are only fit for them raw,
in warm weather. , Steamed swedes are good
mixed, with plenty of meal, but potatoes arc
so much - better that half the meal mixed with
them would feed as fat. tined winter, quar
ters is a great step in the right direction ; the
sleeping apartment should run into a bank
under other buildings or not, as convenient,
and plenty of straw for them to creep under
in cold spells will cause them to thrive as well
as in warm weather.—Conarac GE:7TLE.MA N.
WHITEWASIILNO.—As the season for spring
house-cleaning will soon set in, we_ give . our
reade.s an excellent recipe for making white -
wash. Take a clean
_water-tight barrel, or
other suitable cask, and put into it a halt
bushel of lime. Slack it by pouring water
over it, boiling hot, and in sufficient quanti
ty, to cover it five inches deep, and stir it in
water, and add two. pounds of sulphate of
zinc and' one *of common salt. -These will
cause the wash .to harden, and prevent its
cracking, - which gives an unseemlpappear
wise to the work. If desirable, a beautiful
cream colormay be added to the above wash,
by adding three"pounds of yellow ochre; or
a- good pearl or lead color, by adding lamp,
vine of ivory black. " For fawn color, add
four pounds of amber, Turkish or American
—the latter is the cheapest—One pound In
dian red, and one pound of common lamp
black. For common stone color, add four
pounds of amber and two pounds of lamp -
black. This wash may be applied with a
common whitewash brush, and will be found
much superior, both in appearance' and
du
rability.
RECEIPTS FOR CREAM . PLE.—In one cup o f
sweet cream stir one tablespoonful of flour,.
half a cup of sugar, a little salt, and flavor
with nutmeg or extract of lemon. Bake with
single crust, like custantpie.
ANOTHER.—One cup of thin cream-1 of
sugar—l cracker rolled juice and grated
peel of 1 lemon—layer of raisins on the crust.
Make with two crusts:
ANoruna.-- : Three eggs, three tablespoon -
fula of sugar, and a - small tablespoonful
,of
flour, well beaten together, will make two
pies on a common ple.platter: Line the plates
with crust the same as for common custard
pie..' And sweet cream sufficient to fill the
platters. Bake , in a quick oven until done,
but don't scorch them. Flavor with nutmeg
or common spice.
