• 'We take it for granted that. all our readers
have completed their Plarfs for the spring and
summer campaign an the farm, and are now
ready to commence the busy work of sprin g .
It should be our aim to make "two blades of
gram -grow where only one grew before,"
and get our land into the Eery best tom' it ton
to produce the crops which eve intend to - sow•
or plant. The active labors of the farm corn
inence with April, and in order to bring up
our farms to a thorqugh slate of fertility we
should this month get a fair start, and all our
work well o.ndermay. . ,
BARLEY—Ls one of the that crops= to b
sown, 'which should be done as rorly as the
ground can be pt. Into good condition --
Light, warm, mellow acil is the best for bar
ley. • Seed should be sown at the rate of twp
bushels .to' the acre. L.KI that has been
manured for, corn, will, if in good condilion,
produce a fair crop of barley.

will do more towards 'fertilizing our lards
than anything else we can do. It is the
grand renovating plant of Arterican agrk
ture. We can also apply it With. great IQ--
vantage on barley, corn and oat land, in fn.,
anywhere and everywhere on the farm.
Murnas.—Apply manure freely.to meadow
land. If, we :raise good crops of grass and
clover, and feed it to our stock, or turn.lt un
der, we can soon make a worn-ont.farea rich.

ground is in proper condition. There Is noth

to wait

ground get dry, so that it will break up and
pulverize freely. Attend to the •

filthy and drone combs. if short of food,
don't hesitate to feed.. Place the food on tho
top of the htve,.secured from other bets, if
yon do not wish to attract robbirs. A fen•

stitnto for honey.. Don't neglect the slim
hints.. •
Wood ashes and common. salt,• wet With
water, will soon stop the cracks of a stove,
and prevent the smoke from escaping._
Stir Pollan(' starch with a common, candle,
and it will not stick to the Iron, and It will
be much nicer.: •
Alum or vinegar is good - to set colors of
red, green, or yellow.
Sal soda will bleach very white; ono spoon
is enough for a kettle of clothes.
Save your suds fcir garden plants, or. for
garden yar - ds, when sandy.
Wash your tea trays with cold suds polish
with a little flour, and rub whil s t/ dry cloth.
Frozen potatoes make more. starch than
fresh ones; they also make nice cake. -
A hot shovel held over varnished furniture,
will take out the white spots.
A bit of glue dissolved in Alin milk and
water will restore old crape.
Ribbons of any kind should be washed io
cold soarksnds, and not rinsed.
If your flat-Irons are rough, rub them with
fine salt,. and it will mike them smooth.
Oat - straw is the best for filling- beds ; it
• should be changed once a year. -
If you are buying a carpet for durability,.
choose small figures...,
•
A bit of soap rubbed on.the hinges of doors
will preveiat their creaking. •
Scotch snufflnit. in holes where crickets
come out will destroy them.
A gallon - of strong lye piii,Trt a bariel of
hard water will make it as soft: as rain water.
Half a cranberry , on a corn Neill soon de
stroy it. .
Always mend clothing before washing. It
is the better plan.
EXPERIMENTS WITH. POTATOES.
• Having been requested by several of my
friends and neighbors to publiih in your ex-:
cellent journal a list of the special• manures
which I use in the cultivation, of potatoes, I
cheerfully comply with their_wishes. -
I" use as a top-dressing for potatoes, a mix
ture of fifty-six pounds of sulphate of soda,
fifty-six pounds of sulphate of magnesia and
fifty-six. pounds of salt per acre,"sown broad-
Mist . aa Soon as the sets are planted., My po
tatoei so grown have been abundant in'qu
tify andlexcellent in quality, and have almost
entirely escaped the potato disease.
kbave also found muriate of potash an ex
cellent manure for potatoes, sowh In the drill
at the, rate or two hundred pounds per acre.
I speak of these as a top dressing ; the best
manure to planet in before planting, is well
rotted stable dung. 'rho. following manure
will be found to, produce good crops of po
tatoes: Salt, two hundred pounds, muriate
of potash, muriate of ammonia and phosphate
of lime, one hundred pounds each; spread
evenly oier_the sirfisce, and ploughed. M.
This manure has the
. property of producing
a stout good haulm,and- the plants retain their
toliage longer than when - stable manure is
employed. • With this mixture alone, pota
toes have been grown at the rate of three
hundred bushels per acre:--Coa. FARM /ND
