A FUNNY SCENE—A • YOUNG MAN
WHOSE SOCIETY IS AN EQUIVALENT
FOB HIS BOARD. • • •
Mr. H. L. Patton came before the justice
yesterday morning, and Was clamorous in de
manding a warrant , for. his landlady, who had
unlawfully Seized and detained his clothes,
falsely claiming that he was indebted to her
for rent, which was not the ease '
The landlady,. Mrs: E. A.' Barrett, was sent
for, and it was suggested to her that an •ex
planation would not be amiss. Mrs. Barrett,
after having her three daughters and little boy
sworn, In order that she might , use them if
she Saw fit, proceeded to state that r•lte had
three weeks. before . seen an advertisement
. stating that a young man wanted , to find
some boarding house where his society would
be an equivalent for his board: Then she
reflected that it would be a very nice thing to
have a young fellow in the house who could
beau the girls, talk agreeably at dinner, and
be contented with what he had to eat, and
Persuade his fellow sufferers that they should
be the same. So she: answered the adver
tisement, and Mr. Patton made his appear—
ance, with an umbrella and a very meagre
trunk. Was that not correct?
Mr. Patton replied that, generally ,speak-

She then continued to state that she did not

•should - get acquainted. So she introduced
him to everybody. " • -
The next day just before sinner, she told
him to go ahead,

which, while it flattered the cook; bid-fair to
ruin the mistress. That same evening ahe

neighbor's and he bad plead an engagement
These things had surprised and displeased
Mr. Patton hue desired to know of thejus
tice whether "Society:7! as he used it in his
advertisement,;could be taken to-mean carry
log these homely girls to a party; where he
was obliged' to dance with them, since no one
else would,' (here the girls chorally remark
ed, you invert") and lugging a quar
relsome child up stairs, and sitting by him
until he went to sleep.

Mrs. Barrett observed that she scorned

not homely, and did not need to go begging

As for the boy,- speaking under oath, -be
was tho sweetest child in - the *world, and it
was a pleasure to et and listen to his prattle.

But notwithstanding her remonstrances, Mr.
Patton would not: talk .at mealtime. He
would*not tell stories. He would not sing,
talk, to the girls, or be useful about the house.
He demanded lunch, blasphemed the butter,'
and was once brought home 'very - drunk=

Mr. Patton urged that R was immaterial,
and it was decided that it was. - •
The next morning,, being headachy, he had
insulted her best boarder and demanded three
cups'of coffee. • She told him that her pa
tience Was exhausted.' He must pay her in
paper and not in words. He refused. She
seized his baggage, and little enough It was.,
Mr. Pattoa then quoted the familiar saying
in regard , to casting pearls before swine, and
proceeded to m'ake it clear man thatbe look.

was wasted on them. They wanted some
one to sing comic songs, propose conundrums

"Yes indeed," cried Mrs. Barret, "he could
nQt even play the accordeon." .
- The Justice declined to give , an opinion as
to the value of Mr. Patton's society, or what
sort of society is an equivalent for board, but
decided that he should have .his.clothes, and
leave the' house'. .

teaching, and shall license the holder to teach
in the county, city or borough where issued.

shall be granted by him to practical teachers
holding professional certificates upon the re

nual school terms, countersigned by the pro
per county, city or borough superintendent
In office, when the application shall be made
and approved after examination, if they deem:
it necessary, by a committee of five teachers,
a part of whom may be females holding per,
=anent certificates, if there be' that many.
holding such certificates; but it there be
none or not a sufficient number of that grade
of teachers, the committee shall be constitu
ted wholly or in part as the case may be, of
teachers holdine professional certificates, said
committee to 'be elected by ballot by the
members of the teachers' institute at its an-'.
nual session, from the same county, city or
borough in which the applicant resides at
the, time ofmaking the application, and such
permanent certificate shall continue to be
valid in such county, city or borough unless
forfeited according to the provisions. of this •
act, and shall also entitle the holder ,to leach;
one year in any other county,,city or borough
In this Commonwealth without a re-exami
nation, at the end of which time It may be
endorsed by the proper county, city or 'bor
ough superintendent, if from personal knovil
edge he deem it worthily held, and shall then
confer upon the holder the same rank and
privileges as in the county where issued, 'and .
such permanent certificate shall only be an
nulled upon complaint duly proven of incom
petency, cruelty, negligence. or immorality, .

ma from a college legally empowered in grant

perintendent of good standing, issued at least
one year prior to the election, or a certificate
of competency from the State 13uperiotendent
of common schools; norahall such perms be
eligible unless he has a sound, moral charac
ter, and has . had succesaftil experience in
teaching 'within three years of"the time of his

school directors held in any county, 'city or

proofof the eligibility of the person so elect-.

quired-by this act, and no objection made in
accoridanee with section fourth of the act ap
