An Illinois sucker took a great dislike to a fool
ish young Virginian who was a fellow passenger,
with . him on one : of the Mississippi steamboats.
I was on the boat (said Deacon Doolittle,) and
saw the whole affair. Tho Vi,rginian wee contin

dusting bis boets—to all which movements the
sucker took exceptions, as being what ho termed
"ieetle too darned nice by half." He finally drew
up his chair beside the Virginian and began: •
"Whern might you be front, stranger ?"
"I am from Virginia, air," politely. aratweied

"Oh, in mine," showered the sucker.

"Yon want to quarrel with me, air," Said the
Virginian.
"No, stringer, 'not an atom," answered the
sucker, "hitt I never seed . one of the eeoond fam

I know yon are one of 'the fast, 'cause yon look

This mollified the Virginian ; the hint of a re
semblance to the statesman was flattering to his
feeliegs; and ho accordingly acknowledged rela

"He, you know descended-from the Ingin gal

"You are right, sir," answered the other.
"Well, stranger," said the , sucker, "do you
know that . is anuther queer thing alluz puzzles
me, and it's this : I never aced a Virginian that
didn't claim to be either descended from an Ingin,
John It&ndolpb or nigger."
We need not add that the, sucker rolled off his
chair—suddenly I They were-separated until the
sucker got o 8 at a landing near his borne. As he
stepped ashore, be caught sight of the Virgini

Too Ilucri roa Eiza.-A good story is related of
a prudish old maid who applied at a certain full
!enable photograph gallery iu this city to havo her
picture 'taken. As old maids are generally of a
very ingniaitive nature, always poking around
where they have no bueiness, she accidentally
looked into the machine and to .her horror die
covered that objects are reflected inverted, or, as
she expressed it, "up side down." She perem
torily refused to alt any more; and adjusting her
bonnet ribbons, remarked that "that game was
played out." She wasn't going. to be•atuck rip in
that manner if she never had a picture, and with
a swing.of the "tiller," which would have done
credit' o a New York Broadway 'fashionable, she
sailed from the room with an air'of insulted dig
nity.—Bock .Argus. .
. Tan following amusing incident,is related by a
Dearer paper : Some days ago a merchant of this
city made a bargain with a oottatry lady for two
chickens. The Indy brought them to his store,
and he - being busy, ahe placed them on the end
of the counter. Oar Young friend didn't think
that the proper place for theth, but didn't like to'
say so plainly; ao he remarked, as the &tokens
were trying to jump about., , "They won't lay
there, aiii they ?" meaning they would likely
jump off the counter. Ma astonishment may be
linagined. when the lady replied, "Of course they
won't, they're rooeteral"
A Igssaactrterrrs paper tells a comic story of
newly married couple who attended a launch in a
•ertain city. A staging gave way at a .certain
pointin the proceedibge, and down tumbled the
gentleman plump into the water.. Before he . was
reached his wig came off and floated away. When
he was pulled out, hall, and drenched, his wife
refused to recognize laim, and besought the crowd
that they would save her huebsni, pointing fran
tically to a bunch of hair drifting down the tide.
An actress connected with one of tho theatres,
a great favorite, "was complimented upon the
blackness of her hair.
"Why, it's dyed," she replied with the amiable
frankness of the true artist_
"Dyed!" replied the other speaker, "why, fa
iorita as you are, you are not flue-and-twenty:"
eald the lady ; "but youlthow,,whont the
gods love dye young I" .
AT a soups, the other evening, ono gentleman
pointed out a dandified Individual to hie friend tut
ecalptor.. "What:" said hie friend, "such a
looking chap as that a aculptor?_Surely you mast
be mistaken?"
"He may not be the kind of one you mean,"
said the informant. "But I know that lie chiseled
a tailor out of a unit of clothes het week."
Tug Irish have always been noted for their
original and characteristic way of saying things.
Thackeray tells of an Irish woman begging athim,
who when she etw him put his band in his pocket,
cried out.—
"May the blessing of God follow you all your
Life"--but when he only pulled out ill 3 muff box,

Gnit, or Smarr.—"Mary, why - dld yon kitse
your hand to the gentleman opposite this rimm

drghter. "Why, the gentleman had the impu
dence to throw a kin clear across the street, and
of coursed threw It back indignantly.:Yon would

(Prim the American Farmer.]
THE XOBAL INFLUENCE 01:T4B.MING
It la well to let forth, occasionally, sr me
of the 'arguisqta, favor, of the farmer's
calling in "order to" Conntei balance the it, ti :-
eases that are drawing so many"of our peo
ple into the villages and cities.
A young man, about to choose - his calling
for life, should seriously Consider whether he ,
influences wiltprobably be such : RS will tend
to establish a good moral character. We
know that suchconsiderations generally have
but little weight with the young—that the
prayer, "lead ua not into temptation,' is sel
dom uttered by them, althciugh of the high
eat• importance - ; because they are so cond
dent of their ability to take care of themselves, •
_and •re ist temptation'whenevek they , may
,present themselves. Yet here is where the
greatest danger lies. A young than, trained
to Virtuous habits, will be more likely to resist
any sudden temptation to depart widely from
lils'early teachings, ;than those inducements
which present theinseives, in his daily occu-
Pations i - to vary slightly and gradually from
those covect principles whiCh, have hitherto
gaided him. . •
. Those little concealments and deceptions so
generally practiced in- commerce, to make
sale of goods, gradually weakeh a man's in
tegrity and diminish his self respect, and of
ten pave the way to greater departures from
virtues. A lawyer Is tempted by a large fee
to espouse an unjust cause, until atfer a while
the habit of advocitiog the wrong makes an
inroad' upon his moral character, and dead.
ens. his perceptions'of right and wrong. The
doctor wants patients, and the temptation to
keep a rich one on his bed longer. than ne -
'pessary, is often irresistible. And so, if w e
go through the various , vocations of roan I ()
obtain the wherewith to sustain life, we sha t
fintt that Most of those that rifler large re -
time for moderate efforts, exert Influences
that ' gradually sap the foundations of nii,rhl
charactr. On the contrary, most of the in
fluences.pertaining Jo the farmera
have a tendency to strengthen his moral char
acter. •
First, he is-sustained by the conviction that
his calling is an honest one—that the pro
ducts of his labors bless his fellow creatures.
—minister to their natural wants, instead 01'
creating "artificial ones. If any donscjentifills
farmer doubts that the growing. of bealqty
food bass a tendency to strengthen his - virt
let Mai try the experiment of growing a crop
of tobacco, and see if his is sustained by: an
approving conscience. • Certainly it requi-es
no argument to convince any one, ".that pur
suing a course in opposition to the dictates
of conscience, is a moral injury.
the -farmer's sense of justice, of
°pity, is sustained by the consciousness that
he is fairly earning his living—that he is giv
ing all equivalent for his food and raiment.—
He,- who by' fortunate speculation, or by
drawings prize in .a lottery, or by inventing
a popular Medicine, 111 'enabled to acquire a
large fortune by little effort, does not enjoy
the consoling reflection, that be has given a
fair equivalent for his great wealth.
The farmer's life brings him daily into the
closest intimacy with nature, and he is con:
tinuilly reminded of his dependence upon an
overruling Providence, for the fruits of his
labors. In every blade of grass, in every
'tiny:flower, in the smallest insect, as well as
In' the nOblest animal, in the creation rind
growth of every species - of vegetables and
animals, he beholds. a power and a mechanisnt
beyondhis comprehension and imitation, and
he, knows that a greater Being than man,' is
their. Author. When he sows the seed upon
the groWth and maturity of which the pro
longed existence of man depends, he knows
that unless the Creator gives his genial sun,
and sends the "early and the latter rains," it
will never germinate or groW into the bread,
or fruit,- or vegetable, that sustains life.
But the tnanufaettirer deals with nature at
second hand: He receives. the raw meterill
from the farmer, and converts it into the Va
dons forms, convenient for -use. The-mer
chant, still further removed from nature, ex-
Changes the products of one country, or sec
tion. of country, for those of another. His
associations are more with man than nature,
and he reliei for success more up - on his own
wisdom and shrewdness, than upori the gui
dance of Providence. And thus, in none of
the vocations of mankind are they so con
stantly reminded that there is a God, as is the
farmer's, -
The home influences of the farmer's life are
conductive to 'virtue. He partakes of his
meals, and spends, his evenings by his own
fireside, in the bosom of his family, subjected
to thOse healthful and refining influences,
enjoyed nowhere else so Well as.in the sonic
4, of women and . innocent children. The
townsman who spends his evenings: in a
round of amusements, attending balls, par-.
ties, theatres, operas, ctc , /Cc , knows but
little of the happiness to be enjoyedrat, home.
-He goes abroad for those social stimulants,
which the farther finds at home, and is ex--
Posed to temptations that he would be shiel
ded from. in his . owri family. These are
weighty considerations in favor a farmer's
life. Who would not feel safer in rearing a.
family upon a farm, than exposed to the vices
and corruptions of a city'? Who does not
believe that his son, trained up to . a life of
labor—tilling the soil—would be less - likely
to go'astray, than if brought up In a city
where he can _scarcely step' Into the stree t
.withoat • encountering the • immoral, the
vccious, and the . criminal?
