NIGHT SOIL AS A MANURE.
The nse of night soil as a fertiliser has fre
quently been advocated in these colunins,_
and we have endeavored to shoWhow a er-a.
erally wasted article might be turned to ac- •
count... Recently we hay. 3 had , sent to us, by
several correspondents, an article that cri z -
Wally appeared in 'the Springfield Ilepub.r.
MO, la:lth we quote :
• "Very severe prohibitions have been igiurd
in France, England and ,Germany,
the use 01 pondrette, imperfectly prepared. it
having been proven by careful experine, rili
that the faecal matter of sinks cannot.be oin
vertql with safety into garden manure under
five years' careful preparation. Pestiler.thei
and other diseases are propagated by veun ts:
ides grown In soil thus manned. -Yet, it is
Stated that these death-dispensing dept tie
Ste abaolutely used in ,the market gardens
around on large American cities in their nat•
oral state, and many of the fruits and vege
table& so grown can be told by the nostrils or
the taste before they are cooked, and In the
process of cooking. It is the opinion of
skillful medical observers, that nearly' all the
novel diseases which now afflict many Am, r.
lean cities, owe their_ origin to the organic
diseased matter taken up by. vegetables and
frultagiown in Sell dressed by the Risen'
matter of the sinks, and transferred to the
stomach. Gallnping consumption in persons
whose faiilies have never been subject- to
_this terrible disease have been traced to 0. 10
use of vegetables grown by pondrette."
These are serious charges, which if true
would warrant the denunciation contained
the article,, and our readers need not be toll
that if there were the least foundation fur such
an alarming report - we should not only not
advocate the use of night all, but be among
the first to condemn it. Let us Took a little
at the alleged , facts in the above statement
Are there any "prohibitions" in France,
England and Germany? As to- the last
named country,. we canhot speak so positive
ly, brit in England, the use of city sewage
has been attended with such profitable re
sults, that-one of the important problems cf.
the day is, to increase its employment, rind
prevent a fearful waste. In olden tithes,
1789, there was a prohibition in France, but
the restriction was long ago removed, and Rd
are quite certain that it. has not been re
'Sewed, as the most recent French work cia
gardening, only a few weeks old, speaks of
the rise of night soil. The work of IL. Gres- ;,• 7
sent, 186s;gives plans of some of the eelei
brated market - gardens, in which are tanks
for holding liquid manure, made from Ibis
"death - dispensing , deposit." Joigneaus, in :
the Most recent and most elaborate work on
gardening yet published in France, says that,
the exclusive nee of (meal matters may give •
a bad flavor to vegetables, but advises their -
use when composted with other matters. It -
is very probable that .a plant, especially au
edible root, if grown in ground containing a
large quantity of recent night soil, would
have- an unpleasant flavor. Yet wehave eat
en vegetables from a garden where this msti
-
cure was used exclusively for a. series cf.',
-years, and though our prejudicei kept us on
the lookout for something unpleasant in their
flavor, we failed to detect it.
In China and Japan their success in gar
dening-for their agriculture is almost all gar

use of this manure, as they have scarcely any

goes, we have" consulted with two , of the

the use of vegetablei treated With this ma•-

In all cases we have advised the compost
