• Tuesday, July 31, 186 G
. the origin of the riot yesterday the
readers of • the Times arc well aware. The
appearance of the colored procession,on _Ca
nal street, composed 'of: about 100, freedmen,
was the signal for its commencement. Some
white bystanders attempted to take - away
the national flag which they were carrying,
and a_shot was tired. The blacks claim. that
, the whkes :tired it. The whites tell a con-
tradictory story: hive seen responsible
men who were present, but they fail to - give
air authoritative statement about this, first
shot. .-Immediately after it was tired, how
ever, a bright yellow boy commenced har
anguing his. comrades in the procession, ;ad
vising them to Clear the streets of the "white
—."- He was arrested by an aid
'of the Chief-of Police. This was the drat
arrest made. The procession then moved
on, and turned into Dryades" street, halting
in (Mil Of the Mechanics' Institute, now
used - as
. the State Capitol, where the Conven
tion was in seffsion."They were met with
vociferous cheers from friends of both colors.
They gavelheir version cif the disturbance
above mentioned, and were .greeted; with re
marks of - approval when they claimed to have
repulsed._ their assailants. . They were en
- couraged to take a firm stand for their
"rights," and told , to arm themselves and be
ready for any - eidergoncy. - These things I
heard myself, and for the first.time I felt se
rious apprehensions of a riot: The merchants
commenced closing their stores, and I started
from trio building U) the telegraph, office. A
squad of- policemen , were gathered on Bar
i onne street, in the. rear of the Institute, and
soon marched toward it. .
The procession disturbance had been re
ported to police, herdquarters, where, antici
pating• trouble, a large- reserve farce was
stationed.. Orders were immediately issued
to arrest the nogroes engaged in it Sheriff I
(ox--rebel Gen ) Hayes accompanied the force
to the , scene of action, .and found Dryades at.,
in front of the Institute, thronged with freed
men anti their white friends. It was useless
to try to get into the. building while such a
.crowd remained in front of- Al., -
In the mean time, an immense concourse of
Reople had congregated at the junction of
.Dryades and Canal, and more looking toward'
the Capitol, some of them shouting and hl as ...
- phiming terribly. - The whole city was i n
tremble. Such excitement as the. eldiens
exhibited. I never witnessed before. Tho
Crowd just mentioned comprised men of
every gradelzsociety, incliding many young
in, years, who were- brandishing revolvers in
'the air,
and were seemingly anxious to bo led
`on . to "the destruction of the Conventioners

GENERAL GEARY AND THE
_KANSAS QUESTION,
HE PREDICTS THE. REBELLION IN 1857:
We invite particular attention to the
owing article from F,orney's press
No page in political: history is more ad
monitory than that which exposes the 'reach-
err of - James Buchanan. Elected alone ,
because he distinctly pledged himself in his
letter of acceptance that the people of Kan- • _

Lavery-and freedom, (without which assur
ance he :would have been overwhohningly
defeated in this and other. free States,) his
success had hardly been-ascertained before

that, whatever might have been the oilginal
