Jacques, issued from the front ;:hitor of :the
mansion ;looked out ,the street, walked ft,
little to the right, then At little to the left,
turned round, - stood on - his hes 4, danced
little, and then returned to the house by the
back door. He approached the door of an
interior department, when a side door to the

Jacques ltarted to run. 'She banged away
at him, first with one barrel, then another,
W I tit out doing him any injury.
lacques tried eight doors in the, long corri
dor, but they were, alas, all; all locked- The:
infuriated feied6 whanged away at him"with
another barrel, but the shot went wide of its

hall, making the customaq hole which most

Aioud scream issued from within, and then
all was silent,: -
CHAPTER SECOND
Jacquas found another door.. Fortunately .
it was unlocked. A loud knocking was
heard at the front door of the. mansion, and
then the tramping of. many feet qn the stairs,
and the ()fleeing and shutting of many doors
below, gave intimation that the disturbance
had been heard from the street.
Jacques found himself-in:an apartment
with only. three doors, which'was. a very lim
ited. number for the mansion, in which this
scene was taking place. -
One of these doors bore' a. remarkable re
semblancn to a .492 r which Jasquea had be
fore seen in the NEtion House.• -
Tie shuddered. •
He burst it open. 'A "white face appeared.
The" face terrified - him: He rushed to the
- window. From that high elevation he saw
the .doors of the houses opposite crowded
with people. He rushed again to the other
door. Then he tried the back door. Some
body knocked 'at the front door. Two doors
to the left was an open window, which nat
urally looked out of doors. He heard the
sanguinary female bursting in no end of
doors, in search qf him, in the rear, while
the police were smashing all the doors in the
lower apartment `=
CHAPTER THIRD..
•.
Anddenly a door to the left of him mysteri
ously.operied.- •
black face appeared.
The now thoroughly':terrified.. jacques
rushed towards the sable visage. He beck- -
oned him onward, throngh door after door,
some opening inward, some opening out
•PasSing by one, he caught a glimpse of - an
other-elegantly attired female, who sled:lined
away at him with an old fashioned regulation
•
"Did you knock," said she, in a mild, silL
.
-very voice.
"Did you shoot?" said the somewhat star
tled Jacques.
"I did., Yoh must have a very fine ear,"
said the silvery voice." •
"I heard you playing, and thinking I might
b'e denied admission, I.Qpushed . the door
open." said the.now enamored Jacques.
"Which door?" said she. ..
"The seventh one on the left,. as near as I
can recollect," .said the bewildered Jacques.
As this apartment, had ten doors, it • was
but natural that Jacques should be somewhat
.puzzled as to the means of ingress.
"That is my bed-room," said- the elegant
female sternly. • . -
She made a motion, "as if to draw the trig
ger of her other - barrel, and Jacques wildly:
leaped for another door, flew through a panel
and found himself at: the open front door,
At the same Moment, the :police, in a bcidy,
flew through the, back door; the two .heroic
females burst through two opposite doors and
flew into ,each other's• arms; air, the other
doors Went to With- 'a slam, and there was
a.general opening and shutting of doors all
through the neighbdrhood. • ••
