SCIENCES MEAD. . ,
Sciencetoo comes in to swell this influence
of modern civilizatioe. Pagan and Mahout
medan nations are relinquishing their scien
tific tenets for those_ of ;Christian.nations.—
They accept it as an inevitable result of the
progress of events. The. text-books in all the
schools that are springing up in once heath
en countries, are constructed on the Ortodox'
basis. Therets uot eiception. The world,
is theretore, sitting a. our feet to -learn scit
envies; that speakjust what the bible speaks!
Meanwhile science herself is becoming
more truly scientific, 'because more christian.
Few men now believe that the facts of nature
conflict with those ofrevelations. The deep
est minds . now think with Bacon, that The
ology is "the haven of all sciences." Objec
tions drawn from science have-been answered
by science. Thus it has occurred that the
tr i pparently alien bud,- on whatever stem it
grew, when its appointed hour calm, un
clasped itself but to add new beauty to the,
varied harnsoisy of universal truth.
- Surely it is gratifying, as an eminent schol;
or in substance remarks, to see sciences once
pernicious to the faith, now becoming .her'
handmaids ; to 'see them now, after years of
wandering from theory to theory, return once
more to the home where they were born, and
to the altar where they made their first of
ferings, no longer, they first went out, a
wilful.. dreamy, empty handed child, but
kith Matronly dignity and a priest-like step,
and a bosom full of well earned gifts, to pile
them upon its sacred hearth.
It should als3 :be 'noted that modern sci
ence has opened to us some new views of
God and of his holy word, and so - helped re
ligion. Biblical researches have cast new
light upon the sacred page ; eipiorations into
antiquity have confirmed its testimony;
'learned criticistn 'has developed Its entire
harmony.; while our conceptions of the Infi
nite One have been helped by both Astrono

.and Geology--both .by the telescope
showing new worlds, and the microscope re
vealing what worlds are in a world. -
