The most marked feature of this statement,
next to the very small. daily increase of the
debt, - is that of the reduction of the interest
nearly a million and quarter'of dollars!' This
reduction may, in part. remarks the Philadel
phia Le:l9(r, be traced to the fact that the
Department has retained such compound in
terest notes as have come into the Treas
ury with from six month`s to a year's inter
est on, and issued.notes in 'exchange, 'dated
at the day of Issue, and, in some instances, ` a
month or more ahead: In this way over three
hundred thousand dollars in accrued interest
