, Twati the itlg4 before Chrtatuual. when all through 'the
Not a creature wan stirring, riot inn a unitise
The stockings were hung by thechimney with care, -
in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all enugin their beds, • -
'While visions of sugarplums danced hi their, heads;
And Mamma in her .kerchief and lin my cap,: • ~
Had Rat settled our brains for a long winters nap, • •
When out on the lawn.thensarose such a clatter. • ..,
I sprang from the bed. to see what was the - hiattei;
Away to the Nsladowl dew like 'a flash,.
Tore open the shutter and threw pp the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new.fallen snow •
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.. '
When,. what to my wondering eyes should appear, •
But a miniature sleigh , andeight tiny reindeer, .
With a little old driver so lively and
I knew In a moment it must be. St. Nick. ••
'
More rapid.than eaglei his coursers they came, '•
And he whistled and shouted and called them hrnatim.:
"Now Dasher I now Dancer ihow. Prancer and Vixen I.
On,.Comet I on, Cripld i on,Honder and Blitzed!.
To the top of-the porch to the top of the wall •
Now dash away I of-the.
away I. dashlaway all I" • •
As dry leaves that before the wind hurricane 'fly,: •
When they meet'with an obstacle, mount to the sky
Sato.the heuse.top•the coursers they flew, ..
With the sleigh full of toys, and St, Nicholas too,
And then, in a twinkling. I heard mithe roof
The prancing and pawing of, cacti little, hoof--
Air! dam in my head, and was turning around.
DoWn the chimney St, Nicholas came with a boand:
He was dressed MLitt fur from his head to his foot, •,
And his clothes were alitainished with asheti and soot
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back. • '
And he looked like a peddler Just opening his. pack. •
His eyes, how they twinkled I his dimples, how,, merry
'His cheekawere like wises: his nose tike a cherry
His droll little.mbuth was drawn up like a bow.:
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow ; ^
The stump of a pipe he held. tight in hie teeth,
,*. •
And the stimke it encircled his head like a wreathC;
He had a broad face' and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed,' like a bowl 'full of jelly.
He was 'chubby and plump. 'a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;.
A wink of his eye, and a twist of his head. _
Soon gave me to' know I had nothing to dread ; •

-Although Freat progresslas been made in:
teaching during he last ten or
.tw-clite years,
there,is still much to be done. It is to the
interest of every. teacher that"his profession"
should be exalted. To this end, thenjet eve
ry teacher strive to be the first in his profes
sion. To every teacher, I would say, ahn
high, and then press forward to the - mark: -
Resolve within yourself, that every duty
which devolves upon you, whether in the ,
schoolroom, or in the district Institute, shall
bb performed to the very best of your ability
Each day, as you enter your sthool-room,
make'up your mind that some fault, either in
the discipline of your school, or in your man
tier of teaching, shall be corrected. Engage
in your work, earnestly, heartily. Do not
be
,content with half-way measures. Do not
rest satisfied with merely a mechanical per
formance of the day`s dales, with' no'other
definite object in view, but that of getting
home, when the tithe comes for closing schoOli -
Strive so that, at the end of each-day,- your
scholars may, be wiser aid better, than they
wera.the day before. Lay _before theni right
views of life, and clear ideas
-of duty._ * Teach'
them to respect all authority ; to love obedil
ence and truth. Set before them high and
noble aims. To do this;it is, notnecessary to
tell them they may become great and famous.
that, they may be, future presidents, gotern
ors,:etc. • Teach them to do right, becatise it
is right ; -to love- truth for truth's sake ; so
that whatever, station they may fill, they may
perform their duties-with honor and -fidelity.
George Herbert says, - '
" Who sweeps'a room as for God's law,
-Makes that, and the - action fine." - -
Whenever occasion offers, and if oevasiona ,
do. not oiler, make. °cession, to descant 'Upon'
the value of patience, perseverance, and
punctuality at - all times, and hi all' circum
stances of life. -
Pay attention to the minor morals also. In- ,
culcate by precept and example the virtues of
neatness, order, courtesy, cheerfulness, for
bearance, and all - the little amenities of life,
which serve to make life agreeable; in short,
teach them to admire and practice "whaled
ever things are true, whatsoever things ,are
honest, whatsoever things are just, whatso
ever things are Pure, whatsciever things are
lovely, whatsoever things are - of good report:"
I do not say that all this is easy:- to be Acne.
It is not easy. The true teacher's olsce is no
sinecure. But " let patience haVe.lier perfect
