He would sit in the chimney corner Of the old fashioned house,, scarcely ever speaking, dividing his attention equally between the fire and feast ing his eyes on Sally. For two years this quiet adoration went on, and the neighbors wondered why, as there was nothing to pre vent it, they did not marry. It never has been known whether the idea arose out of Zack's own brain, or whether it was a hint from a friend, but at last he did find courage to pop the question. It was done in this way; the time was New Year's eve, and the fair . . Sally had been preparing a stout jug of mull ed cider, that she might have something to cheer Zaers heart whet' he '_came in. Zack remained with his head up the chimney after this speech, silent as death for some minutes, until: he came forth from his piece of refuge at the earnest solicitation of Widow Bran, with a face glowing like .the setting sun. The thing was. done, however, and - Zack . and Sally were married in a few weeks after, and we are convinced that if eiiher of them•eould be induced to talk, now, - after a trial of a dbzen years, they would say • that they were _entirely satisfied with that ramie of popping the question. • • • Tsai-Faux Vtvsurs.—As - these elegant parlor amusements are coming daily more in vogue amongour 'citizens, we have, at great expense,. procured the following tnodels from that learned philosopher Billings, as contrib uted to that magnificent and model institu tion known as the Associated Press: A T4Amows IN 4 Acne. We should be very sorry to' Ree women of America subjected to the noel drudgery of the women in Europe, y e t no one can look upon, this out-of-door labor, if not of a character to overtai their, strength , as likely to work any thing but good to those who participate in - it. Hundreds of farmers boys, ambitious t o do "the work of a man," and entoursgixl ir, it by their parents long before they hi m man's strength and endurance, have be en stunted for life, dwarfed, or drawn outs! efiacie,.and still rernainesl healthy arid stress, while others have contracted disease, lessen ing their ability, and shortening their lives._ Of course females are quite as likely as mal e , to, injure thernielves in the same Tray_ American women, and women folkket th is fatma.not leis than ..others, are proverbially "delicate," neryaus and weak 4 Could tbs ruddy and brown.complexions gained iu tbs field, become fashionable; and the; "interest. ing" pale-faces of the darkened parlor fiat themselves decidedly In the shade, the ntizt *eneration would have an additional reaso n to be grateful to this, and to these erual.wir times.—Anier. .Agricultrist. SEEP UP TOE FLOW OF IIILK Ir DIIOIIIIB, A drouth in summer, !scorching the pastures drying the streams, parching the land far and near, is a great calamity. and- none feels it quicker than the. diaryman. The provident farmers have made provision for any sucgoe eurrence, by putting in corn or sorghum, or other green fodder'erops, TV'hichs will afford an abundance of excellent forage for a long time, and if not thus used, ;will furnish dry fodder for winter feeding. Corn, if only well cured, is second in value only to good mead ow hay of, mixed grasses:_ Wherever It is possible,, the practice of "taking up" the cowl every night, stalling or yarding them sad feeding green fodder, or an equivalent, is ad. visable. A little oil cake meal, or cotton seed-cake meal, or Indian meal fed daily el this-time mqtes itself very -profitably felt in the milk pail, or in` the butter tub. • As soon, at any rate, ..as the least undue diminution of the-quantity of milk is noticed, accurate obseriations ought to be made daily:. and measures • ought at once to - be taken to keep up the flow. Farmers are so mud; in' the habit of letting cows fall off In milk 'du ring the summer's drought, that unless . they almost dry:up, many would regard it as only the natural course of things.' If, however, this) , have.coidatantly full feed during the first 4' or 5 months after calving, the falling : of should be very small. If the cows . can not well be stalled; nor put into !nose. boxes In. sheds or barns, they may at least, very easily he yarded. It is best tolput a large herd in eel , -end small, sheltered, dry yards; those agree: ing best or of about equal strength being put together. When the one or two . fighters or "bullies" of a herd are taken out for a night the- rest will be quiet.enough, and a deeitl6 ly better return for the feed may be expected. The yards ought to have fodder racks, so that the feed will not be wasted. The amount of Teed "to be provided for the cows, and the time- to take them up ... will depend very much upon the, condition of the pastures. They ought - to be turned out very' early' so that they may fill themselves if they can, before the heat of the day, or else they should hare a feed before they, leave the yard. With de return of rains and a good growth or gas, if it is desirable, the feeding at home may. It discOntintied. By this practice a much bet ter flow of milk will be secured for the au tumn and winter.-- r -Amer. 'Agriculturist. PICK OFF THE STONES. ' There is a prevalent notion founded sortie interesting* facts, that. land is oft damaged by the removal of stones. notch] standing the fact that, most land is grim benefitted by the.. - operation. . 'There is I doubt of the fact that stones wnrmed by sun, impart the heat to the soil after the t is off, and essentially modify' the temperattn of the soil. They • also furnish drainagein some measure ,; bedded in the soil, thoypr vent - washing ;' by their decomposition they furnish slowly some elements_ of nutrition, especially during their exposure to the Imo] and thaws of winter, and so in various wan', they are of some , considerable advantage unfilled land. Where,„ however; such he is brought under judicious culture, the stow removed; the soil deepened and drained neceasary, not only are they 'of no use, I they are of positive disadvantage, et though not " laige enough to interfere.wi culture in any way. - The advantage gair from their removal may- not be sulficlenl warrant picking up stones-of such a'size . they they are not in the way of the plc hoe, or mowing Machine ; for where the rot er liused inieeding, and upon mowing, the small stones are cheaply and easily out of the way, Arid the injury. to the ercl not sufficieftt ordinarily to - beconie eutsl of calculation.- Nevertheless they do.oect the place of just so much soil, and we therefore, they are better off the field gather. •When buried in' masses, - the over them - if it be of a good loamy or else eharactm - , will shbw from afar as the be the field, unless a very thorough syster drainage be pu , rsued , which would that , all allke.—Amer.
