WILL lIEGRO TitedrEi FIGHT!
The answer is furnished by the comPlete
conthrrenee of teitimOnjr as to the superb
eotirage of the lacgr 'troops ,at the stotraing 1
of the Petersburg hitienchmenta on Wednes
day of last week. ;The dispatchea to the .
War Department refer to them as "assaulting
and. carrying , the rifle-pits with great gallant
ry," and add "The hardest, fighting was
done, by the Wick trooPs. •••The forts they
Stormed were the Worst.of all. After the af
fair was over, Gen. - Smith vtent to Shank them,
andlel them he was . proud of their courage
and dash. He says they cannot be exceeded
as soldiers, and that hereafter he_ will send
them into a difficult place as readily as the :
best white troops. They captured six, oat of
sixteen, cannon which he took." • 'The ac-
Counts of all the newspaper correspondents
• are. of the same tenor. The facta are beyond
'question. The division Which earned this
praise was the' division of
. Gen. Elias, part
of GCII. Butler's command.
. These facts'are recited with particularity,
partly because all" prominence is due to the
heroism of the black tamps, 'Partly _ to put to
shame the mei' and papers which have per
sisted in denying courage to, the negroes.
And attention is called to the fact that the
blacks in every instance in which they have
'been tested.in this War have fOught courage:-
43181 y. There, is, no; record of .cowardice
against there. • ,
- The Copperhead papers are either silent,
-, or sticak with contempt and disparagement of
the negre troops. But notwithstanding this,
there is really nothing new - 3)r surprising in
the brilliant conduct of the blacks at Peters
- burg.' They fought with.desperate courage
at Port Hudson, charging across afield and
into defenses which it was imsoldierly mad
' ness to order them against"; yet they wenato
sure death without a murmur. At Milliken's
Bend, they repulsed an attacking force .of
more than twice their number. At Fort
- Wagner, the: 5 tth Mits'sachusetts won a re
nown surpassed 'by no single white regiment
jn thls war. At Olustce • it, wasthe blacks,

army. -AA few weeks since, at Wilson's Wharf
on the James. a black garrison. defeated the
chivalry. of Virginia, the horse.nreoot Fitz
Hugh Lee. At Paducah it was part Of a
-blabk regiment which, under the bi'ave Col.
Hiehs, drove Forrest front the fort , and town.
At Fort 'Pillow ' 4OO black . tioeos defended
their works to the last moment iLgiiinst 2,000
white Reliels--and their Massacre is' yet to
lie avenged.
The list of their nchievements •Is not en- .
hausted, but more than enough: art*mention
ed to vindicated the claim of the black.trOops
to stand by the side of the best white troops
- in the.rmy. Nor do the latter reject them.-
The Army-of the Potomac believes in men ,
who will figikt—weleomes with cheers its''
