Mtn OF SENATOR BEADIOUCIA
'News from Bap Francisco to.tbi 16tb pit., et-
palls the uncertainty that bad previously alreadyd
the result of the Broderick and Terry duel. Judge
Terry is the — ,vlctur, not the victim. The duel
took plitce on the 13th, and the Bon. David C.
Broderick, U. 8. Senator, was shot through the
lungs on the first Bra, and fell mortally wounded.
He lingered WI the morning of the 1816, when
death ended hie sufferings. -
The Tribune in no ettiele on his pbluicetcareer
in Callfarnin, concludes as follows :
.• •
•
Mr. Broderick his been struck down in the fellness eh
his powers, and in the morning of his usefulness—
Though hut recently awakened to the nature and mo•
moot, of the 'irrepressible centime whereof cur Union
is the arena, the Slavery Propaganda bad no more deter
mined and hardly a more effective antagonist Though
beaten in the recent contest .be had four years yet to
serve in the Senate—time enough, perhaps. to TOldeve
his fortune' and redeem his Elate. For this. be would
have labored with a resolution and courage that would
have deserved 'nevem', If they did not eonsmaud it. But
he was marked Sr destruction. and could hardly have
avoided that fate. lied Terry fallen, Denver would pro
bably have challenged him next, and Gain or Lathim
third. Ili was never married, and leases no family to
lament his untimely death. We presume" Gov. Steller
will secure his seat In the Senate, unless fudge Terry
should claim it, In pursuance of Gov. Marcy'' celebrated
axiom that "To the victors telong the spoils of the van-
gobbed."
California is henceforth a submissive satrapy of the
Slave Sower—as reliably seas Arkansas or Florida—more
so than Missouri or Tex& tier Delegates at Charleston •
will sustain any platform and'auy candidates that the
Oligarchy may prescribe; and her time. hiectorial Vohs
will be given Inc slave-trader Limo, or any Union
hating tire.eater, in case he ahniVskadt.Mt the nomination.
. A gallant minority will struggle aplost such degra
dation. but (for the present) struggle in vain; and lithe
tlateholdent 'meantime to press the legalisation of their
"peculiar institution" within her borders, now in their
time. Hitherto, Slavery In California has been upheld
only. by judicial deelstone„ the last of which was truly
though jestingly mid to bare held the scales of justice
even by giving "the law to the North. and the negro to
the South."• Ileneetorthi the South may takalaw, negro,
and all. .And, this too, shall pass away."
