Marshall this morning rarest by to send you a statement of the revolt obtained in Using the different kinds of Anthracite Coal found this re gion, as fuel for locotantivienghtes upon ibis road. • . y e regard to that matter, I wilt say that I-have t a ken-considerable pains to ascertain the relative value of the hard and soft Coat for locomotive fuel, as welt as the valise of Anthracite Coal in comparison with wood. We commenced burning Anthracite In locum .tives on this road in the summer of 185.5, at which time we had one Coal burning engine and four wood burners. , The Coal, burner was, purchased from the makets when nearly completed, in .order to save loot of time in having one made from new plitterni. , t • I was apprehensive tff the: time that the amount of fire surface in the boiler:Was entirely too small to work economically and satisfactorily with , hard White Ash Coal, but Mir company concluded to purchase the engine. 'We found in using the dif ferent kinds of Coal mined in this (the Shamokin) region—ipeluding free, burning White 'Ash and Red Ash Coal—great •difileulty in generating Loam rapidly enough to do foil work. In order to make the:quantity of steam required we were obliged to use a sharp-cutting blast, obtained by contracting the exhaust poufs, and working on der;severe back pressure 'in the steam eylindera, whiCh lessened materially, the effective power of tbeangiee. The acuteness of the blest required caused so great a concentration of heat in the fur • flare, that the durability of the fire-fret, flue.sheet, grate, bars, Ac.,would necessarily be short; and a waste of fuel from the Undueamount of clinker anti ashes produced; as Well - as from the frequent feting and cleaning of the fire, was , a necessary consequence. We disposed of the engine after , e trial of I months, and immediately gave a specification, covering the boiler capacity, forms! of furnace, floes. with an order for one ert gine. After this en gine ' was put on the road, we used several- kinds of Anthracite Coal, without any diffieulty in generating etifileient steam, and alter atrial of - a few weeks, I ordered two other eugineti to be made from the same patterns, and of the same capacity as the first tine. The en} gine.s• ere now in successful operation on this road; .and the Inraaces, fl ue•shisets, flues, smoke-box, etc:, ere in good condition, though no repairs have been. made to them. The - general appearance of -these parts warrants the belief, that they' will re ` L serviceable, without much 'coat for repairs, five years longer if well used. These engines are as simple in their eonatruction :as tommott wood burning engines, and-there is no more Timplica. tion in their working parts and ft.:turfs. The form of these engines, size of wheels, etc., was • determined for freight purposes only, at a speed not exceeding fifteen miles per hour—a change in their proportions, forms. etc., would be necessary in constructing engines for high speed, yet the principle involved in the working - and manage ment of them sieuld remain the same, and the result obtained would be equally satiifactory and tee - nutlike!. We hove, at this time, no weed burning engines on this road, and the 'differen'cc in=ane cost of fuel, repairs, etc. k .in -favor of the Coal burners over wood burning engines, to per. forth the, same amount of duty: is More:, than liq-per cent. There is less difficulty in genera• tins tha necessary quantity of steam. at all times, than lima good wood burning engine, and tott:ch lees labor in firing and working the engine. We ate burning hard White Ash Anthracite Coal, trent themines in this region, known us Locust..sloon- WO Coal, and use in engines with steam cylinders sixteen by twenty-four inches, doing full wdrk, on a run of thirty miles, an exhaust nozzle fotir ard one-half inches,. in diameter, without ducting it necessary to contract it often, to obtain .s • tft cient steam. • • We use no spark arrester of any kind in the smoke-pipe, and have no -difficulty in working with nn open pipe from the smoke-box,- sixteen inches in diameter. , without a deflector or any other obstruction to the current. We have no difilculty in keeping the flues open and clearl, ns but TT! little Coal passes into them from I the furnace, and we seldom have occasion to clear out I • the smoke-box. We have twenty-six square feet of i grate surface in the-furnace , and. the flues; are taro and a half inches dindieter, in the clear.— :The furnace,•tlue-sheeis and flues are Iron. We bevel% lalge amount of fire turrets in the I fur. .uace and tines, and by' the admissiqn of the prop. er quantity of oxygen, a very complete cembits. lion of the gases is effected before passing feat, the stnoke.box. • - -I am of the opinion that. the unsatisfactory re sults obtained in many carts where hard lyhite Ash Coal has been tried as fuel for locomotives, were due entirely to the earner which thei ap plicationovas made. Bituminous Coal can'he4onmed in. an ordinary { wood burning locomotive tolerablyt well, so tar as' generating Sufficia t steam is ( concerned, but if the tire capacity is contracted and the blast severe, the practice is both wasteful in;.fuel, and destruct , ive to all parts of the boiler that are expos 44. It is p, populaverror. to suppose that soft free burning Coal is more economical, as Net for steamboilere, than the, "bard White Ash Atithret- cite." lam aware that soft Coal cAn he b - urned in a boiler, where the amount of fire surface is very small for the amount of duty to be per formed, mere successfully than "hard White Ash," if the quantity consumed is !not considered itn poriant, but, where the cost of fuel,.-amount of latter bestnwedi uniformity of heat generated,' complete combustion, and durability of boilers is taken into account, I think the "hard; White Ash Coat," when properly applielf, poteee!eir de much adrantag! oter!soft Coal, as good, aotid, hickorkwocd powasesorer hemlock or chestnut, for }team purposes... Ilam convinced that ' the only secret - in using "bard White Ash Coal" success feel-for locomotives, can be fourid in a.bo is plain and Simple in its construction, sufficient fire surface; in `proper term,' crate steam witk a mild blast, with necessity of disturbing the' fire by shaking of the grates, er prying n an( IL _ . I have bad ahput •nineteen years prat re el ex. porience in tonitnicting and operating mitrine,, stationary " and •locomotive engines and boilers, and Ain perfectly satisfied that the "I, must Mountain White Ash Coal," or any other equally hard and pure, is the , cleanest, least trouttesome I anti, 51014 economical for all steam purpozes, if properly applied. , • Ito July, 1856, I made: 'an aierimental trip with one of our Coal burning ennes; from Sun• bury to Williamsport, over the Su. buryk and Erie i t Railroad, with a train of one h l mired and six loaded Coal cars; each car carricif oreefour.and n vorketer tone, (nuking over five hundred tons , of Coal in the train. The line is a gradual ascent, baring a maximum grade of IS, feet per mile; it was an unfavorable day, es there was.a steady drisiling rain during the whole- triN making a slimy, slippery 'rail. Oarhe return trip, we brought ninety :'empty ChM cars, making a run, both 'ways • of eighty - four utiles. The furnace was not cleaned during thi; trip, and the whole amount of ashes collectedn the ash pan meaWred about two bushels, We carried a pressure of one hundred and fifteen , pounds of steam per equitrw inch, making the rum each way in three hours and forty-five tuitiutes, which was the - schedule time .for Coal trains. We ran .the same engine over that, road for Aliment' months afterward, with triins.ranging train eighty to one hundred loaded Coal care, stied had no difficulty in generating eteam'and making regular time.— The average consumption /of fuel' fti the round trip—including the railing of steam in the morn ing—war two and one 'quarter fond of Locust Mountain Coal; also, one-sixth of a ciird'of v&.l, daily, for lighting. i ' • Very respectfully, • 1' A.
