of the, age, and try every Method that is earned, an d
promises any probability of success, to remedy the evils
under Which we now labor.
The first working of our Mines was by windiasi and
bucket. To this succeeded horse-gins, tor raising the
coal, dirt and water, through shallow shafts, and som e ,;

.-The fan was driven a small„direct acting. non-con
densing steam engine, with a Cylinder of 12 Inches In
diameter, and 12 Inc Stroke, worked by steam taken
front the boilers of the winding engine, at a pressure of
13 !beta the squire inch. The velocity of the fen gener
ally used was 60 revolutions per minute. giving a veiocj.
ty at the circumference of the vane; of 2.515 ft. per min
ute; and from a series of experiments Instituted for the
purpose, It was estimated that the quantity orate drawn
through the mine was 43,000 cubic feet per minute, et a
velocity of in ft. per minute. or about 9 miles per hour,
at 80 revolutions, the quantitypassing through was 66;
0 , 10 cable feet, at a velocity of 11107 ft. per minute. or
about 12 miles per hour. It was found that from 60 to
01/revolutions par minute gave the most suitable amount
of vent ilatiou for that mine, arid that beitind 80 revolu
tions per minute the current of air was too strong to al
low the lamps to be kept alight In the workings. • 'The
working velocity of the fan was regulated by *'throttle
valve In the steam pipe .if the engine, which was under
the control of the man to charge of the working of the
pit. and was adjusted according to the requirements of
ventilation arising from changes In the atmospheric
pressure, and In the quantity of noxious gum in the
workings."
At the time of writing the amount the fan had been

beard by the author of the paper. who was at the top of , '
the shaft at the time, and who instantly turned the'
steam full en the engine. Increasing the speed of the ,
fan to near double its usual rate. This mussed such an I uH
crease in the velocity. of the current of ventilation, ae,
to carry the after damp, resulting from the explosion, r ;
past the men in the working*, so quickly, that they es.;
report all serious iujury, so momentary was their, expo
sure to its effects, but if ouiy the ordinary. velocity of
the current had been maintained. some of these men
could not have escaped with their lives. The man who
caused the explosion, by going into a stall with a naked
candle, was severely burnt, but recovered from tb, 10-
jury. ,
Almost immediately after turning the full steam on
-the engine, a shower of black particles was thrown out
of .the tan which would be.the result of the explosion,
'being the fine particle& of the carbon liberated as light,
Macey soot from the decomposition of the carburetter*
hydrogen by the expiosion. This Is comillooty but in
correctly called "coal dust," and Is always the result of
an explosion: and which itt the author's opinion, lathe
cause of the fatal effect of the after damp: from the ac
cumulation of the minute, solid particles of carbon on
the lungs, and not the exposure to Carbonle add and
- nitrogen resulting from the combustion of the gas; as
Will found that men can live for some time , in this af
ter damp by taking the precaution of covering their
mouths and noqtrils completely, with a handkerchief,
so as to sift the air they breath and thus prevent those
floating particles of carbon from entering the lunge.
'An additional advantage of the ventilating 'tan is,
that as it requires no Ore in the pit to work it, them
CAD be no danger of an explosion in its - urni, by the
gas gaining access to the furnace, and we are also re
lieved from the annoy.rnee of the smoke and heat of the
fire, in the upeast shalt with its attendant shrinkage of
the brattleellinber and consequent leakage of air.
Another of these ventilating fans has been erected
at Shine Spring Colliery. near Elsernr, of a rather larger
size than the one above described-being 15 fret in diame
ter—with ir sliest feet,3 inches wlde,and making 80 revo-
lotions per minute. The result Ise thoroughly efficient
ventilation of the workings—completely under centrol
at the surface of the mull :, and maintained re at an ex
penditu of fuel exti eenel smell as compared with that
required for ordinary turn ventilation.
This IS no fanciful device, the product of some enthu
siastic inventor, destitute of a proper knowledge of the
object to be accomplished, but simply thq enlargement
and application to this use, ofa well known Implement. by
praeliell men possessing a thorough. knowiedge of their
business—its wants and deficient methods; and as
• might have been readily anticipated, under curb eircum
rstances. the experiment has been crowned with the most
complete succetut. trans of a similar construction but of
smaller size have long been used by the farmer to clean
his grain, the founder to blow his cupola furnace and
the miner to procure a supply of fresh air In extending
his gangs ay or other forward heading, but this is the
firstt acrou nt that I have seen of their application as gen
eral ventilators, and I earnestly, call the attention of our
operators to the propriety of their Introduction among
us for this purpose. Our prisentmethods are notorious
ly and confessedly Inefficient, frequently resulting in
great loss of life and property, but if any reliance is to
be placed on the published accounts, the fan offers a
thoroughly reliable snit efficient method. at all times
under perfect control. and .will consequently tend to
greatly lessen the dumber of 'accidents in the mines.
