ifesers. If. N. Warren d 02.—Ggsrukuts:-1 was pre;

Fire and Witter Proof Ccmposition Roofing, on the 21st
of May last. The object, I suppose. was to give persona
not acquainted with the nature of the roofing, fin own'.
. titnity-to see it tested. I arrived obi the ground about I
olelork and saw the beards put on the roof; they were
in a rough state; the edges not jointed, or grooved and
matched. After the hoards were on they were covered
with three layers of felt, and then by rkeoiting of Corn
positing. and the whole covered with gravel. ,
• A quantity of combustible material wasplaced within,
and at the appointed lithe a match was applied. A fad
* ons fire soon burst from all aides of the house, and en
veloped the whole building in a flame.' If 'continue to
burn for at least three quarters of an , hour. At that
stage of the tire, I felt a desire fo-knint bow the :foot
would stand if water was thrown upon It, and asked Smr
tnikslon to try the experiment, which was granted,Snd,
I applied there or four buCkets of water on the' roof
Which - run off as though there was no tire under or
around it.. ~ . ,
' Gentlemen, my opinion is, that so far , as tire is con
cerned; it is the best kind of k roof, from the fact that its
air tightuermireventseombustion In ease of a Ore in a
building where the roof is of year material, the fire
would not be ' likely to extend to , the adjoining build.
Ings. I bad an example of this kind last winter, on the
tth day of January, at 4 o'clock in.the morning. A fire
hike out in a row of Rack Howes, on the south side of
~ fieybert fit., west ed. and street. It bad a roof of your,
Composition. and the tiro was4confined; to the house
' Where it originated. I have nohesitation in saying that
'if it had been an ordinary roof, the whOle row would
1 have burned down, from the fact that it was one of the'
:coldest mornings we had last wlnter, and the wind blew
~ a hurricane at the lime. iteybert street is north of the
1 Girard .0)11ege wail, and at that Arne of the morning,
together with the coldness of the weather. made it a
long time before we could get wester on the building.—
Not witlittanding this, we extinguished the fire without
injnry to the adjoining building..

According to the promise I made you after re

of stirring events, as they transpire in the Western
World, I shall give as clearly as is he my power,
en seeount of 01 terrible riot that occurred at St.

On Friday afternoon the news reached us in

itself on every countenanceidespair chilled every
heart. Mothers terror-stricken, clasped their
children to their breasts, and mew with blanched
Bps and '
chattering teeth, whispered to each other
their fears :or the safety of their household gods.
But as in a stormy night' one star peeping forth
amid the darkness, will revivify dying hope in the
breastof the Mariner, so the right of the Sheriff,
driving into town i n his chariot, was hailed with
joy, and all with One accord exclaime4—nhe no
