OTErISTIOO OF AII:ERICA" Acraicurruu. The importance of collecting early "and complete official returns of the crops, stock • &c., of American Agriculture, is beginning to be felt . . In treat Britain, the wheat crop, tar example, is ;scarcely harvested, before of ficial returns of the entire yield are gathered and spread before the country. This saves much , uncertaiety as to probable prices and is undoubtedly of - inestimable value to pro ducers, however it may effect the interests of dealers who speculate mainly upon the doubt'and uncertainty as to the actual yield in'enY year. Something equivalent , to 'the system of annual statistic tables recently pet in operatipn in Great Britain, will, we hope, be soon intreduced here. At present we have dnly imperfect tables gathered once in ten years, and published in the decennial, census reports. But even these are still imp er f e ct, and - we are happy to second any effort to ren der them more valuable. The "American Googrephical and Statistical Society" of this city is agitating the question; as will be seen by the following proceedings at a recent meet. • ing for organizing ad "Agricultural Section." John Jay,' Esq., was chosen chairman of this section, and read the opening paper, tak ing for 'his subject . :—"The Pre-eminence>of Agriculture-as the leading National interest of the United States, and the increased itn portance it is to derive from_ the growing de mand for bread for Western . Europe." 'We can give but an outline of the remarks. "- rious facts were quoted to indicate a future increase of that demand, not only in England, .but in France; Belgium, Holland, and the German, States: The food question is evi dently recognized by ithe European Govern meets as the'great economic and commer cial ' question of the age, and, as one that is invested in times of scarcity, 'with .marked ., political significance. The capacity of the . United States to become the grain . prod . ucers . . of the World, is apparent fromiho brendth of her arable land, and small density of her pop:' ulatior, the intelligence of her farmers, the expanding ittfluence.4 of her institutions, and - her commanding central position. . Agriculture is destined not simply to ter.' keish the bulk of our exports, but to exert an all important influence upon our national strength in developing the industrial aqd moral qualities of our people, and its futuie -- statistics may develop laws that will assist us to solve Moral and economic questions, that k have puzzled the statesmen and philanthro pists of both hemispheres;: The returns of the census for 1840 and 1850, discloie' with tolerable accuracy the leading feattires of our agriculture, the ' amount of Nand occupied, improved -And un improved, the breadth of land devoted to the -several crops, the annual value of each crop, the average of' crops to the acre, _the nuinlier of farms, thbir average size, the average val ue of land in each State, &c. They .show Indian Com, our native grain, to be by fn our largest staple, exceeding in value w , cotton and hay combined., This cro torn) has doubled since 1840, and yielded the last year more than eight hundred millions of bushels, worth Four Hundred Millions Lars. Wheat comes next amt, constitutes of breadstuffs our•largest export.' The apparent, deterioration of the -soil as shown by the decreasing average of crops to, the acre, the average — of 'wheat je New York, Ohio and Indiana being 12 bushels, while in England his - 21, and in Optlend 30 ; the . average duraticn of life in towns and in the rural districts with a reference to thefact that in Surrey, England, it is 45 , , years, and in Manchester and Liverpool cildy 25, and the increasing proportion of our popula t ion who are relinquishing agricultural purruitii for trade we ir referred to as interesting topics which might, be so elaborated-and verified by the'nextDensus, that its returns should teach us not only, lessons of political economy, but , daily duty. The 'subject , was one -- ,that con cerned the whole countiy, and suggdstions for . the improvement of the agricultural schedules would doubtless -be cordially welcomed at 'Washington. • . • / On pie conclusion Of the paper, Hun. Geo.. kolsgisa, Ade some retnerks concluding with thelellowing resolutions which were support ed by Mr. Pierrepont and Dr. Adamson, . and adopted "Resolved, that in the opinion of this Soci ety the increasing magnitude' of the Agricul tural interest in the' United States renders it a matter of National importance that the Agricultural Schedules, for the census of lAGO,„ should be made as complete as possible, with • the view of 'marking accurately its progreas, its captibilities and-the-podia of Agricultuial labor; and with the further view of dieconir 'tog where, end to what extent, the treble 4il of the' country is deteriorating in fertility, under existing modes of cultivation. . Resolved, that the agricultural section of this body be instructed to invite suggestions front gentlemen throughout the Union, in re gard to the topics that should be embraced in the New Schedules. On motion of Mr. Barney, it Was . further • Reso/red, that the Governors of the several States he advised by the Chairman of the AgriCultural Section of the foregoing resole• tions, and bo respectfully requested to present to the Society, for preservation in their lilea• ry, copy of the last State census and any other official docuMents bearing upon.
