The Vaud ot Dlrectorsof the Schuylkill County Alms
nouns, respectfully request the tax-payers of the County
to *mulls* carefully the annexed Jktatetnia t for, the
'oar 107. The total amount. of eXpendltures appears
; very bossy, but when the numberof paupers that have
begin supported is titian into consideration, It w ill
fientid that the ant per day of supporting each pauper
Is quite as low as can be shown in any limiter Inetltsr
time in the State. We defiles be call the attention of
the tax-payers to the fact that large numbers of able.
'bodied men have of late years taken up their winter
quarters In the Alma /louse. At ,this time there are
upwards of 1 00 young, healthy and ablebollitd men In
the House. Tide elass of ''peuxinework during thesauri
mer, and spend all they earn, depending on the Aisle
ilonse . for support during the winter. 'ln this way the
Uonse r h crowded up with loafers and vagabonds. Per
' IMP some will say, "why don't you clear them nut?"
We nkcity that they are sent here with en order of re
lief from a'Justlee of the Peace. arid we ars bound' to
receive them. And we feel justified In' saying -that In
many instances those orders are given merely for 'the
sake of the tee of twenty cents. In our opiates nal:ti
tles of the Peace ought not to be entitled to any nem,
venation for issuing an order of relief. W e . believe
that If .the law allowing a Justice of the Penes twenty
edits for an order were repealed, the number of paupers
in our Alms House could be very much reduced. I tthe
number of paupers cannot be reduced, additional build-
Ingo will be required.
Ws take great pleasure In expressing our entire meths
Diction with the ofilcers of the Abolitions& .Too vele
praise cannot be beetowed on the Skewer:Lair. 'John
Behwalm, for the able manner In which he has dis
charged the arduous and reepormitde duties of his'fit
nation: Drs. S. H. and sbainlon, Physicians;
the House, and irr. Samuel L. Theluthiv, Out-door Phy
sician—have also discharged their 'duties promptly and
faithfully.

Some time between 1780 and I Top, the King of
Spain gave le duck of these sheep to George the
