,of•Tde Patna& Bras, Bared.—The Band
needs encouragement. Them Is no doubt of that
fact. It should not be allowed tc disband, or
droop far lack of Mil title,. Roping therefore,
that our citizens will give their cue a hearing
and Mishit the Bud to get on Its legs again, we
invite attention to the following eoMmunication
from an -old member of it:
Matteis. Enreosta :—Tbe vitiation has bees
asked frequently of late, what has become of our
Band, are theTy broken up, ie. Now; as an, old
member of the Pottsville Brass Band, I will en
deavor to lay. before the citizens of this place a
plain statement of our affairs. In the first place,
some of our instruments are very much , out of
repair, so much so as to be almost useless—tliey
being the ones we bought at our ,oripinization,
and have been continually in use since. We find
ourselves at the present time unable to purchase,
others to replace them. Therefore we hale to;
keep up oar organization with reduced numbers,;
and if one or more happen to stay from practice,l
we are unable to play. We have the material in
the way of musicians in this place to make a
first oho* Band, end with the proper aid of the
citisene we could accomplish it. I would take
this occasion to appeal to tbeirliberality on be
half of our. Band, to aid us in the purchase of two
or three instruments, of which we are greatly in
need. We hive beretofore,endeavored to conduct
this band, so as to be a credit to ourselves and'
an ornament to the Borough. How far we have
succeeded, we leave the people to determine.—
Citizens of other towns, of the same sin or near
ly so as ours, Reading, Easton, Danville, de..
hare come forward and largely assisted their
Bands, to purchase silver instruments for every
member. In the present state of money matters,
ire do not expect that,- but .could; not the gen
tlemen of Pottsville, assist us to rib, the sum of
$lOO or so, which would put us on good footing
again? At the time of our organization. (nearly
five years ago,) we received of the citizen!' of
Pottsville about $4O, and since that time we bare
neithereeked or received.one dollar es* gift, ex-
NO $6O presented. by two gentlemen of Pottsville,
(with which we purchased an instrument,) whom,
we are proud to mill our friends. The same gen-1
demon together with several °there. presented
our lea der, N. J. hehr, with a silver E Plat eajz i
horn, and the ladies also presented bins with a I
silk sash, for which we are most profoundly ' ,
thankful. Some people ' ••snd intelligent ones
amongst them, too; think 'slimness of a Band
are very light. if they were members a short
time, they would think differently. ,Bniforms
cost considerable; wear and tear of initrumerds
most something, not counting the originsl cost
which came out of the pockets of the members,
except the aforementioned seam Every piece of
music As purchase costs from two to three dollars;
rent of room to practice in coats considerable;
note, books, Fiends, • lights, and lose of time; Ac.,
cost a good deal, and so we find •in the long
run, we are playing for the amusement and en
joyment of others at oar own expense. - Will the
people of Pottsville consider dos matter se
riously, and moms forward and help us, for which
we would be ever grateful? S. T. SKEEN,
On Waif of the Pottsville Braes Band.
